Bernard noticed Katherine's reaction and found her way cuter than when she was being bossy.
He raised an eyebrow and teased, "Who would've thought someone as strong as Ms. Galatea could have such a freak-out moment?"
Katherine was speechless. She had no time for Bernard's sarcasm!
Damn it, she had considered all sorts of scenarios before coming here, but she never expected Alex to show up today!
Weren't the Melville and Mitchell families famously at odds? What were the heads of these two families doing in a private meeting?
She remembered that the vibe between Alex and Bernard wasn't exactly friendly before either!
But this showed that Alex and Scarlett had really been getting along well over the past month, and maybe their families were slowly starting to accept them?
No wonder even the engagement was now on the agenda!
Katherine nervously clenched her fists.
Bernard squinted, not caring about Katherine's feelings, and instructed Billy outside the door, "Let Scarlett and Mr. Melville in."
"Yes!" Billy immediately responded.
Oh no! He's coming in!
Katherine panicked, with nowhere to hide, watching as the office door slowly opened.
She didn't want to see that guy, didn't want any more interactions with him!
In the end, Katherine didn't bother to ask Bernard's permission and quickly ran to hide behind the large bookshelf behind Bernard's desk!
Once she was hidden, she let out a slight sigh of relief.
Within seconds, Katherine heard Scarlett's voice in the office.
She asked, "Bernard, why'd you call me to the company so urgently? What's the emergency?"
Scarlett's voice was still so soft and gentle, like a harmless little deer.
"Nothing much, just seeing you clinging to others all day and not coming home. I was afraid you forgot about me and our home!" he answered.
Bernard's tone with Scarlett was noticeably warmer. Though there was a hint of reproach, it was mostly indulgent.
Blushing from Bernard's teasing, Scarlett shyly said, "Bernard! What are you talking about? I do come home every day!"
Bernard pretended to be annoyed and snorted, "Yeah! You leave home at seven in the morning, even earlier than I get to the office! And you come back late at night, eating dinner out. Is that what you call coming home?"
Scarlett circled the desk and threw herself into Bernard's arms, acting all cute.
She said, "Bernard, I have things to do. It's not like I'm intentionally leaving early and coming back late!"
Bernard hugged his precious Scarlett and said, "You have someone in your heart and have forgotten about me!"
"Bernard!" Scarlett buried her face in Bernard's chest, embarrassed.
Bernard helplessly rubbed Scarlett's hair, then looked up and nodded in greeting to the man who had come in with Scarlett.
Bernard said, "Alex, sorry to trouble you, and thanks for bringing Scarlett over."
"Just on the way." Alex stood tall and relaxed, hands in his pockets, and nodded slightly.
At this moment, hiding behind the bookshelf, Katherine felt a bit suffocated. She hadn't heard that man's voice for a month, and her feelings were complicated.
Bernard glanced at the bookshelf behind him through the reflection on his computer screen, a subtle cunning flickering in his otherwise gentle eyes.
Then Bernard said, "Alex, I have something to discuss with you. Do you have a moment?"
Alex checked his watch and replied, "Sure."
Bernard helped Scarlett up from his embrace, then elegantly stood up and grabbed his coat, saying, "Then let's take Scarlett out for lunch and talk while we eat."
Alex responded, "Okay."
Katherine, listening from behind the bookshelf, unconsciously placed her hand on her two-month-pregnant belly, her eyes reflecting cold sarcasm.
Bernard was probably going to discuss the details of Alex and Scarlett's engagement!
With a child already born, the families likely had no choice but to accept it!
The Melville and Mitchell families' elders might have already resolved their beef and reconciled.
Bernard, with his arm around Scarlett's shoulder, walked to the office door with Alex. Suddenly, he stopped as if remembering something.
He said, "Alex, could you take Scarlett ahead first? I just remembered I have some urgent matters to attend to here. Billy will make the restaurant reservation. You two go ahead and eat; don't wait for me. I'll join you as soon as I'm done here."
Alex responded calmly, "Okay," showing no particular emotion in his tone.
"Bernard, then Alex and I will head to the restaurant first! Come join us as soon as you're done!" Scarlett said sweetly.
Bernard smiled indulgently and replied, "Alright, I will!"
Hearing that Alex and Scarlett were about to leave, Katherine finally breathed a sigh of relief. Luckily, she hadn't been discovered.
The bad news was that she suddenly felt a wave of nausea, instinctively covering her mouth to hold it back. She couldn't make any noise now!
Her morning sickness had been getting worse lately, probably because she had been worrying too much and not resting well.
Feeling awful, Katherine took a step back, covering her mouth. Eventually, the acid reflux in her stomach made her cough twice!
The sound of coughing drew the man who was about to leave with Scarlett, his pupils suddenly contracting!
Alex's hand paused on the door handle, and he quickly turned around, his cold gaze directed at the bookshelf.
That sound, it seemed like Katherine!
Scarlett also heard it, stopping and turning back, asking curiously, "Bernard, did someone just cough? Is there someone else in your office?"
Bernard turned his face slightly, glancing at the row of bookshelves in his office, his expression unchanged. "Did you hear something? Scarlett, you must be mistaken."
She insisted, "No, I definitely heard it! It even sounded like a girl's voice! Bernard, you wouldn't be hiding someone here, would you? I'm going to check!"
Having just been teased by Bernard, which made her blush, Scarlett wanted to seize this opportunity to tease Bernard back, especially if he really had a woman hidden in his office!
Seeing Scarlett heading towards the bookshelf to search, Bernard's brow furrowed slightly, but he said nothing more.
He had no intention of covering for Katherine; he just thought it would be hard to explain if she was discovered.
But it didn't matter.
There were no outsiders here.
Hearing Scarlett's approaching footsteps, Katherine knew she was in trouble, but there was nowhere to hide. After dry heaving, her face was pale, and she was breathing heavily.
Scarlett, with a playful smile, peeked behind the bookshelf, her expression suddenly freezing!
Seeing Katherine hiding there, Scarlett was stunned for nearly a minute, her doe-like eyes turning from shock to anger and disgust.
What was Katherine doing here?!
