Chapter 549 Celine's Appeal

Hearing Celine's words, Katherine was totally floored.

Honestly, she didn't know much about Celine's backstory. All she knew was that Celine had shown up here solo and, after chatting with a priest at the local church, decided to become a nun.

"Katherine, not forgiving them just means you're still hung up on it," Celine said, her usually chill eyes showing a bit of emotion as she let out a soft sigh.

Katherine was usually pretty fierce around others, but she always softened up around Celine. "Celine, have you forgiven the people who hurt you back then?"

Celine's eyes darkened, "I can't forgive. Katherine, I actually have a son. I've been thinking about him all the time."

Katherine was shocked. This was the first time she'd heard Celine mention having a son. "Celine, how old is your son?"

Celine took a deep breath and sighed, "He should be almost thirty now. I wonder if he's married, how he's doing."

Katherine frowned, puzzled, "Celine, haven't you thought about going back to see your son?"

Celine quietly lowered her eyes, "What good would it do? I don't want to see my ex-husband again!"

Katherine furrowed her brows and blinked, "Your ex-husband? Why don't you want to see him? Did he hurt you? Domestic violence or..."

Maybe it had been a long time since she talked about the past, "He never hit me, but he cheated on me countless times." At this point, Celine gave Katherine a meaningful pat on the shoulder, "Katherine, don't trust any man's sweet talk. They can all fake being in love. Except..."

"Celine, that's a bit harsh, don't you think? Some guys are good, like me." Jonathan walked in from outside, cutting Celine off.

"Who's this?" Celine asked, eyeing Jonathan.

"Just someone I know," Katherine glanced at Jonathan, a hint of disdain in her eyes.

After all this time, Katherine still wouldn't call him a good friend.

Jonathan's face tightened with frustration. He forced a smile and introduced himself to Celine: "Hey, Celine. I'm Katherine's friend. I came with her to visit you. You can call me Jonathan."

Celine looked at Jonathan thoughtfully and then turned to Katherine with some concern. "Katherine, do you have a boyfriend?"

Katherine didn't hide it from Celine and nodded, "Yeah, I have a boyfriend, but it's not him. Celine, to be clear, he's my boyfriend's friend, not mine."

Celine was silent for a moment, her brows furrowing deeply before she spoke again, "Katherine, your boyfriend didn't come with you but let his friend come instead?"

Katherine shook her head, "No, I bumped into Mr. Mostow here by chance. He wanted to come to the church to pray."

Celine scrutinized Jonathan with a serious look, "Jonathan, could you please step out for a moment? I need to talk to Katherine alone."

Jonathan shrugged and smiled, "Alright, I'll head to the side chapel and give you some space. I'll come back to find Katherine later."

With that, he shot Katherine a knowing look before turning to leave.

Katherine felt annoyed by Jonathan's laid-back attitude. She had already told him that this church wasn't a place for his goofing around.

"Katherine, what kind of guy is your boyfriend?" After Jonathan left, the usually calm Celine suddenly grabbed Katherine's wrist, her eyes tense and filled with deep concern.

Katherine was momentarily stunned before she replied, "He's a bit older than me. He's a pretty good guy, I guess."

"Is he good to you?" Celine asked.

"Yeah, he's pretty good." Katherine's answer was vague. Lately, she'd been rethinking her relationship and future with Alex.

But she didn't want to say too much and make Celine worry about her.

Celine looked into Katherine's eyes for a long time, "Back then, my ex treated me so well, I thought I was the happiest woman in the world. But shortly after our marriage, he started staying out all night, not answering my calls, and became impatient with me. We began to argue constantly. Later, I wouldn't see him for months while he was out every day with different women, many of whom bore his children."

Katherine furrowed her brows tightly. Even someone as calm and wise as Celine had encountered such a terrible man? "Celine, you went through so much!"

Celine looked at Katherine with deep affection and said meaningfully, "Katherine, sometimes it just takes a moment or one word to get tired of someone. I used to be very troubled, wondering what I had done wrong to make him so unwilling to see me. Later, I realized that no reason was needed. He was simply tired of being with me. In this world, there is no such thing as eternal love and affection."

Katherine thought of Edwin and her mother's past.

Back then, Edwin had also bravely pursued and confessed to her mother. But after winning her over, everything changed—cheating, a home wrecker, illegitimate children.

'Maybe all men are like this. When they say they love you, they mean it. But when they stop loving you, they change in an instant, don't they?' she wondered.

Was Celine reminding her to be mentally prepared and not to believe in love like she did, only to end up heartbroken?

As Katherine pondered the meaning of Celine's words, Celine spoke again, "Katherine, I'm not a qualified nun. I still can't let go of many things in my heart, so the former priest allowed me to leave the church. And I have always had a personal interest in you."

Celine had a personal interest in her? Katherine had never thought of this. She was stunned. "Celine, do you want me to do something for you?"

Celine was silent for a while before speaking again, "Actually, you already know. I once had a son. He is my only concern in this world. You were different from other girls since you were young. I have always liked you, so I always hoped that when you grew up, you could marry my son."
