Chapter 144 Alex, You Were Too Tired Last Night!

Scarlett tugged at the man's coat, her voice soft and gentle. "Alex, I've already met Katherine. Just as you said, she's a really nice girl, and I like her too."

Alex's gaze shifted from Katherine to Scarlett. He looked down at her and said in a low voice, "Go change your clothes. I'll have Leander take you home. Your family is worried about you."

Scarlett seemed a bit reluctant but obediently nodded. "Alright, I'll head home then."

He acknowledged her with a sound, then looked up, frowning. Katherine, who had been standing there just a moment ago, was now gone.

While Alex and Scarlett were talking, Katherine had turned and gone upstairs to her room.

As soon as she entered the room, Katherine keenly noticed that someone had moved things around.

The room was Alex's bedroom. Since coming to the Melville Manor, she had been staying there to play the role of Mrs. Melville.

Alex didn't stay there often, and when he did, he would just take a shower and sleep on the couch, rarely touching the room's furnishings.

The servants didn't dare to move things around when cleaning, but now, many items on the cabinets and tables had been rearranged.

Even the lamp on the bedside table had been moved from the left side to the right side.

Katherine was used to sleeping on the left side of the bed, with the lamp close by for convenience at night. Now that the lamp was on the right side, she noticed it immediately.

The bed sheets and pillows were neatly arranged, without a single crease, indicating that someone had tidied up that morning.

Could it be that Alex and Scarlett had slept in this room last night?

It made sense. If Alex brought his woman back to his own home, where else would they sleep?

Katherine frowned in disgust.

This place wasn't clean anymore; she decided to go to the guest room.

As she turned to open the door, Alex's tall, imposing figure stood outside, casting a strong, cold shadow over her.

Katherine instinctively took a step back and looked up at him.

Up close, Alex's fatigue was even more evident, with bloodshot eyes revealing his sleepless night.

His love for her must be incredibly deep. It was enough to make a normally restrained and calm man like Alex indulge to such an extent!

Katherine's eyes darkened. "Alex, you look too tired today. It would help if you rested in the room. I'll go to the guest room."

With that, she tried to walk past him.

But he coldly stepped aside, blocking her path, and questioned, "Where were you last night?"

His tone was low, calm, and without a hint of emotion, yet it carried immense pressure.

"I was at a friend's house," answered she honestly.

Alex's brow furrowed, his sharp eyes narrowing. "How dare you stay out all night?"

Katherine frowned in displeasure. What was he saying?

She was an adult, not a three-year-old child. What was wrong with occasionally staying at a friend's place?

Besides, what was the point of coming back?

If she had returned and seen or heard something she shouldn't have, wouldn't that be awkward?

"I chatted with my friend late into the night, so I stayed over," said she.

Alex leaned in closer, pressing her. "Which friend? Male or female? What's their name? Where do they live?"

The barrage of questions from the man made Katherine felt offended, and she couldn't help but explode!

Katherine snapped. "Alex, can't I have any friends? Do I have no privacy here? Do I have to tell you everything in detail? Then tell me, how is this different from being in prison?"

Alex paused and squinted his eyes, looking at Katherine's defiant and fierce expression. Instead of getting angry, he laughed, the fatigue on his body instantly dissipating by half.

Katherine seemed to be in good spirits, still having the energy to argue.

He stared at her in silence for a moment, not arguing back, and asked mockingly, "Where's your phone? Even if you were staying at a friend's house, why didn't you call?"

At the mention of the phone, Katherine's confidence wavered a bit. She helplessly spread her hands. "Sorry, your phone... I don't know where I lost it last night. I'll buy a new one to replace it."

It must have been lost during the scuffle with that blogger. She only realized it was missing when she took a cab in the morning. Luckily, she had cash on her.

Alex snorted lightly, raised his hand, and pulled the phone out of his coat pocket. Holding it with his long fingers, he tapped it lightly on her forehead. "How come you are so careless?"

Katherine blinked in surprise, took the phone, and confirmed it was indeed the one she lost!

She looked up in astonishment and asked, "Alex, what's going on? How did this phone end up with you?"

Alex succinctly replied, "Someone found it by Whispering Ripple, turned it in to the police, and the police returned it to me."

So that's what happened! Katherine nodded, relieved.

She muttered, "Good thing it wasn't lost! Otherwise, I'd be worried. This phone is linked to your huge bank account. If someone stole it, I couldn't afford to pay you back!" She muttered to herself.

"Katherine." He suddenly called her name.

"Hmm?" Katherine naturally looked up, waiting for him to continue, but her heart skipped a beat when she met his deep, unfathomable eyes.

Alex looked at her deeply and said in a low voice, "I don't want to imprison you, so you don't have to be so guarded against me."

Katherine was stunned.

Alex's attitude was stern, but his tone was as gentle as possible. He continued, "You can have privacy, you can have little secrets you don't want me to know, and, of course, you can have your social circle. But you absolutely cannot stay out all night without a word like you did yesterday. What if something happened to you?"

As he spoke, his rough hand caressed the girl's face, his long fingers gently brushing her delicate cheek as if holding a precious treasure he had just recovered, reluctant to let go.

He addressed her earlier complaints, not ignoring her feelings and giving her a specific answer and attitude.

His unpredictable and ambiguous attitude made Katherine feel very confused. His words sounded like he was blaming her, but he was also trying to reason with her.

Was Alex too tired?

So tired that he was muddled?

Alex lowered his gaze, staring at Katherine's delicate and pretty face, from her eyebrows to her nose and then to her sharp little mouth.

A week without seeing her. When he longed for her, it was bearable. Light a cigarette, close his eyes, and he could get through it.

But actually touching the living, breathing her, he realized that the uncontrollable desire ignited instantly, and he couldn't wait another second!

Alex lifted her small face and kissed her almost greedily.
