Chapter 442 The Biggest Flaw is Having No Flaws
"Katherine."
She was about to get in the car when she heard someone softly call her name from behind.
She turned and saw Bernard hurrying towards her.
"Katherine, can we talk alone for a moment?" Bernard asked gently.
Katherine raised an eyebrow, thought for a second, then turned to the man beside her. "Alex, could you grab me a yogurt from the store up ahead? I feel like having one."
Alex knew she was sending him away on purpose. Normally, he wouldn't let her talk alone with another man, but he knew Bernard was her brother.
They had been separated for years. Since Katherine wanted to talk, Alex didn't want to deny Bernard the chance.
Alex nodded and gently rubbed Katherine's head. "Sure, I'll get it for you."
He walked slowly towards the store.
Once Alex was out of sight, Bernard said, "Let's go to the garden. The parking lot has too much exhaust, and I don't want you to feel uncomfortable."
Katherine nodded, not minding the extra walk since she had agreed to talk.
They walked to the hospital garden, and Bernard found a spot to sit. He took off his coat and placed it on the stone bench. "Katherine, sit here."
Katherine sat down without hesitation.
Bernard adjusted his pants and sat beside her.
"Mr. Mitchell, just say what you need to. I'm in a hurry to get home."
Hearing the formal "Mr. Mitchell," Bernard looked at her helplessly. "I'm sorry. Today was supposed to be a nice family dinner, but it turned unpleasant and almost hurt your baby."
Katherine smiled lightly. "Your family has upset me many times. A simple apology won't fix it."
Bernard's brows furrowed, his eyes filled with guilt. "Are you really not planning to come back home?"
"Of course I will!" Katherine replied without hesitation.
Bernard's eyes lit up. Was she still willing to come home?
Katherine continued, "I'll be going home with Alex in a bit!"
Bernard was momentarily stunned, then smiled bitterly. "Does the Melville family feel like home to you?"
Katherine shook her head. "The Melville family is just a big house to me. My home is with Alex, who loves me and whom I can rely on."
Bernard felt conflicted. As her brother, he hadn't properly vetted her husband before she got married.
"As long as Alex makes you happy. If he ever changes, you can come to me, and I'll deal with him."
Katherine scoffed. "If he changes, I won't need you. I'll just leave him. I won't settle for less!"
Bernard was taken aback but then admired Katherine.
This was his sister, bold and decisive, knowing when to hold on and when to let go.
Unlike Scarlett, who only knew how to cry, blame others, and play the victim.
He had been blind before, caring for the wrong person and falling for such poor acting.
Bernard took a deep breath and asked, "Katherine, you started working for me to find out why Mom left the Mitchell family with you, right?"
"That's right," Katherine admitted.
At this point, hiding anything was pointless.Better to be straightforward.
Bernard sighed again. "No need to investigate anymore. Whatever you want to know, I'll tell you."
Katherine narrowed her eyes and said sarcastically, "You'll tell me? Tell me what? That our mom was caught in the act and kicked out of the Mitchell family for making a mistake?"
Bernard frowned. "Katherine, there are things I don't want to believe either, but back then, I did see Mom coming out of a hotel with a man."
Katherine laughed. "Seeing is believing? I've walked out of hotel doors with many different men. According to your logic, does that mean I have something going on with each of them?"
Bernard's brow furrowed deeply. "Don't talk nonsense like that!"
Katherine rolled her eyes. "No matter what happened back then, I believe Mom wasn't that kind of woman!"
Bernard was pleased to see his sister so firmly defending their mom. He nodded. "Yes, I also believe Mom wasn't like that. That's why I've been reinvestigating the events of that year, but I haven't found any flaws."
Katherine was disappointed. "Just because you can't find any flaws doesn't mean there aren't any! Even a fool could figure out that the biggest beneficiary after Mom was kicked out is the biggest suspect! And you, you took a thief for a mother and switched allegiances!"
Bernard wasn't angry at his sister's scolding, but he felt very wronged.
He had never considered Alice as a mother. Over the years, he had only called her Alice out of respect for Scarlett. He rarely spoke to Alice otherwise.
After Claire left the Mitchell family with Katherine, Alice came to their home pregnant, forcing a marriage. Their grandparents only allowed her to marry because she was carrying a Mitchell family child.
Bernard had suspected that Alice had set up their mother to climb the social ladder, but he was just a student back then, without any power, and faced many obstacles in investigating.
Later, when he took over the family business from Edwin, the first thing he did was reinvestigate the "affair" incident to clear Claire's name.
Unfortunately, he still couldn't find any evidence of a setup.
He told Katherine not to investigate further, not because he doubted their mother's morality, but because it would yield no results and only drain her energy and spirit.
Bernard didn't want Katherine, like him, to be stuck in the past, regretting not protecting their mother and sister. That would be too exhausting.
Bernard didn't argue against Katherine's accusations. He just sighed and asked, "Katherine, after Mom left with you, where did you go? Why haven't you been with her all these years?"
Talking about why she hadn't stayed with Claire, Katherine's mood became complicated, and she furrowed her brows. "I don't know. My memories from that time are very vague. I only know that Mom entrusted me to the Galatea family, and then she disappeared."
