Chapter 136 Birthday Surprise

After hanging up the phone, Katherine lazily leaned back on the sofa, continuing to eat chips and watch TV.

Twenty minutes later, Teresa rushed to the Melville Manor, dragging Katherine into the car, insisting on taking her shopping to buy a birthday gift for Alex.

Katherine was helpless. Why did she have to buy a birthday gift for Alex?

She was just a temporary actress, playing the role of Alex's wife for free, and now she had to spend her own money on a gift for him.

It didn't make any sense to her no matter how hard she thought about it.

On the downtown shopping street in VK Mall, Teresa was seriously selecting from the exquisite jewelry displayed in a glass case.

She asked, "Katherine, what kind of gift do you think Alex would like?"

Katherine, standing indifferently to the side, tried on a pair of sunglasses, casually answering while looking in the mirror, "No idea."

Teresa frowned, turned to look at her, and showed a troubled expression. "Katherine, aren't you at all curious about my Alex? Don't you ever study his likes and dislikes?"

Katherine lowered the sunglasses with her slender fingers and raised an eyebrow. "Why should I study his likes and dislikes? Is Alex some rare animal? Will I win a Nobel Prize in Science for studying him?"

Teresa was stunned. It was the first time she had seen a woman with such a calm attitude towards Alex.

"Exactly. It's that indifferent attitude that makes people want to conquer you. No wonder Alex can't get enough of you!" Teresa remarked.

Katherine twitched her mouth and thought, ‘Can't get enough? When did Alex ever show he couldn't get enough of me? Teresa, with her romantic fantasies, indulged in unreasonable imagination!’

"Katherine, if you're too lazy to pick a gift, just buy Alex some clothes. As long as it's from you, Alex will definitely like it! I know a brand with super stylish men's wear! Come on, I'll take you to see it!" Teresa advised.

Katherine had just removed the sunglasses and put them back on when Teresa dragged her into a high-end men's clothing store.

"Katherine, how about this outfit for Alex?" Teresa asked.

Looking at the finely tailored high-end men's wear, Katherine was completely uninterested and shook her head. "I think his wardrobe is already full of similar styles, and he has more than he can wear. He doesn't need more clothes."

"Of course, Alex doesn't lack clothes, but if it's from you, it will feel different! Katherine, you can't show up empty-handed for your husband's birthday, can you?" Teresa stated.

Teresa's words reminded Katherine that she was currently playing Alex's wife and needed to keep up appearances.

So, she decided to buy him a birthday gift to avoid being caught by the people at the Melville Manor.

Katherine frowned, her eyes suddenly catching sight of a "Clearance Sale" sign in the men's store across the street. Everything was priced at $50.

Her eyes lit up, and she walked over to the sales section, picking up a white T-shirt. "How about this one?"

Teresa followed, looking at the overly childish white T-shirt in Katherine's hand, her mouth twitching involuntarily. The T-shirt was a simple, common style, but it had a cute little kitten printed on it, making it very adorable.

"Katherine? Isn't this too childish? It's not really suitable for a mature man like Alex, is it?" Teresa asked.

Katherine was indifferent. "Alex always dresses too stiffly, always in suits, looking like a serious old man. This will give him a change of style and add some friendliness!"

Teresa said, "But this is too..."

Whether the clothes suited Alex's style or not, Katherine didn't care. She was just cooperating by buying a gift; whether he liked it or not was not her concern!

Katherine interrupted, "Excuse me, could you please wrap this up for me?"

"Sure, please proceed to the front register to pay," the staff said.

Katherine pulled out $100 from her pocket to buy the discounted T-shirt. She deliberately didn't use the phone , opting to pay with cash.

Because she was using Alex's phone, paying with it would deduct money from Alex's account. Using Alex's money to buy a gift for him was inappropriate, so Katherine used her own money for a change.

Taking the $50 change from the cashier, Katherine flicked the bills with her slender fingers and said to Teresa, "The gift is bought! Let's go, I'll treat you to coffee!"

Teresa couldn't imagine what Alex's expression would be when he saw the gift Katherine had bought him.

UU Coffee Shop, Teresa said while sipping her coffee and giving her evaluation, "Katherine, I realize you're really different from other women!"

Katherine, sipping through a straw, casually replied, "Really? How am I different?"

Teresa looked at her with amazement. "Other women would seize every opportunity to spend a fortune to please Alex, but you just spent a mere $50 on him! And yet, you still manage to make Alex care so much about you. You're extraordinary!"

She thought, 'Does Alex care about her? Really?'

Katherine chuckled, "$50 is still a token of appreciation!"

Teresa looked puzzled again and asked, "But aren't we girls supposed to think hard about how to win our boyfriend's heart? Aren't you afraid Alex will lose interest if you treat him so casually?"

Katherine raised her eyes, her lazy gaze becoming a bit more serious, and said to Teresa, "In this world, there are two things you can never hold onto. One is time, and the other is a person's heart. If someone has lost interest in you, no matter what you do to please them, they will never belong to you. So, why waste so much effort on something futile? It's better to focus on your career, improve yourself, and become the one in control."

Teresa was stunned, her puzzled look turning into one of admiration. "Katherine, what you said is so philosophical! I need to learn from you. From now on, I won't care about men; I'll focus on my career!"

Katherine pinched her brow, worried Teresa might misunderstand, and patiently explained, "It's not that extreme. Having a relationship and enriching your emotional life is also a nice thing. Still, you should never easily give yourself away, nor should you pin your future entirely on a man, compromising yourself to please him, understand?"

Teresa nodded earnestly and said, "I got it! Thank you, Katherine, for your guidance!"

Katherine wasn't sure if Teresa truly understood, but she had said all she could, so she went back to drinking her coffee.

Guidance?

She had never been in a relationship herself; she was speaking from intuition.

Teresa was a typical girl with a head full of romance. Katherine hoped her words would make her a bit more sensible and prevent her from falling for every sweet-talking man she met.

Katherine took out her phone, and when it rang, she saw it was a call from Alex's new number.

Alex gave her his phone and phone number. He had switched to a new number.

Answering the call, the man's deep voice came through the receiver. "Where are you?"

Katherine replied, "Alex, I'm at the downtown shopping mall."

"With whom?" he asked.

"Teresa," she answered.

Alex said, "Give me a specific location. I'll send someone to pick you up."

Katherine blinked and questioned, "Alex, you're back from your trip?"

"I just got off the plane," Alex replied.

"Alex, you don't need to send someone. Teresa'll take me home," Katherine stated.

Alex was silent for two seconds, then said, "After you finish shopping, come to Moonlight Manor. I have something to tell you."

Moonlight Manor? Was Alex throwing himself a birthday party?

The thought of meeting his friends and family again made Katherine frown. "Can I just go home?"

"No!" He seemed to anticipate her intention, interrupting almost seamlessly, "You must come. I want to see you."

Katherine fell silent.

Her heart inexplicably skipped a beat.

Alex said he wanted to see her.

The man, who was always disturbingly calm, suddenly spoke urgently, saying he wanted to see her.

She remembered that before Alex left on his trip, he had said he wanted to have a serious talk with her about their relationship when he returned.

What did Alex want to say?

What was he intending to talk about their relationship? Alex was acting strange. Could it be that he...

Teresa had somehow moved close to the phone and shouted, "Alex, don't worry! I'll definitely bring Katherine to you!"

As soon as Katherine hung up the phone, Teresa became lively again. "Katherine, you've bought a gift for Alex, now buy yourself a beautiful outfit! Alex is back from his trip; you need to dress up nicely to see him!"

Katherine's face darkened. "By the way, why are you carrying a camera with you?"

Teresa had just taken a professional camera out of her bag and was filming Katherine. She grinned mischievously. "I'm filming a vlog, documenting daily life for Twitter!"

Katherine twitched her mouth. "Do you need such professional equipment for a vlog?"

"Because this has a higher resolution!" she explained.

Teresa had guessed what might happen today, so she had prepared the camera in advance. She wanted to record Alex's confession to Katherine, keep it as a souvenir, and maybe even use it to blackmail Alex!

Under Teresa's enthusiastic recommendation, Katherine went to a women's clothing store and tried on a light blue dress. The store clerk also put a simple yet elegant diamond hairpin in her hair to match the dress.

Teresa, holding the camera, was stunned. "Katherine, you look so beautiful!"

Katherine felt that dressing like this was a bit pretentious and wanted to take it off.

But Teresa wouldn't let her. After quickly paying the bill, she dragged Katherine out of the mall and drove towards Moonlight Manor.
