Chapter 157 Interrogation

Katherine looked at Bernard. "Looks like that ten million dollar check I gave you yesterday didn't work. Didn't we agree that after taking the money, you wouldn't show up in front of me for a year? It's not even been 24 hours, Mr. Mitchell, and here you are again."

Bernard, having witnessed Katherine's capabilities before, wasn't surprised. He slightly curled his thin lips and said seriously, "Ms. Galatea, this is not the time for jokes. If it weren't for Scarlett's case, I wouldn't have the time to bother you."

Katherine took a sip of water through her straw and answered, "I've already told the police everything I know about Scarlett's case. If you have any more questions, Mr. Mitchell, you can ask the police directly."

Bernard looked at her with a calm and respectful gaze. "I'm here with the police's permission to confront you, Ms. Galatea."

Katherine raised an eyebrow and asked, "You want to confront me?"

At this moment, a police officer in the room stepped forward and said to Alex, who was standing silently by the bedside, "Mr. Melville, please step aside for a moment. We need to be closer to the suspect for the confrontation and to take notes."

Alex looked down, his expression indifferent as he stared at the officer. His hands were casually tucked into his pockets, standing there unmoved.

He didn't say a word, but his presence was intimidating.

Seeing this, the officer looked troubled and called out, "Mr. Melville."

Hearing the officer's voice, Katherine turned her head and said, "Alex, I'm done with the water. Could you please put the cup away for me? Thanks! Then you can sit and wait over there; standing must be tiring."

Katherine, still handcuffed, awkwardly held the cup with both hands and extended it towards the man.

Alex narrowed his eyes slightly, calmly raised his hand, and took the cup from her.

However, he didn't put the cup back on the cabinet. Instead, he naturally held it in his large hand.

Then, following the girl's suggestion, he pulled a chair and sat a bit farther away. He crossed his long legs elegantly, rested his elbow on the chair's armrest, lazily supported his head, and took a sip of water through the straw, planning to observe how Katherine would handle the situation.

Everyone present, except the police, seemed surprised by Alex's seemingly ordinary actions.

The Alex they had known for years, who was always a neat freak and hated physical contact with others, was now drinking from the same straw Katherine had used, without a care in the world?!

Scarlett watched his every move, her eyes first widening, then dimming. She unconsciously clenched her hands.

Bernard, noticing Scarlett's disappointment, tenderly took her hand and led her to the sofa in the room. He gently patted her shoulder, silently offering his support.

The police were ready, with both video recording and note-taking in progress.

Bernard spoke, getting straight to the point, "Ms. Galatea, didn't you say you needed a witness to prove you met Ethan before you would confess? Well, I'm here to be that witness!"

Katherine yawned, covering her mouth. "Sorry, I need a real witness, not a fake one."

Bernard remained composed. "Don't worry, I wouldn't be here confronting you without solid evidence."

Katherine lazily leaned back against the headboard. "So, Mr. Mitchell, how do you plan to prove I met Ethan?"

Bernard sat up straight, leaned forward, and clasped his fingers between his knees, indicating his serious and formal attitude at the moment. He spoke slowly and deliberately, "Before we proceed, may I ask Ms. Galatea a few questions?"

Katherine shrugged and then said, "Go ahead."

Bernard began his questioning, "The night before last, did Ms. Galatea visit the Whispering Ripple waterfront?"

Katherine nodded and replied, "Yes, I was at the Whispering Ripple waterfront that night."

Bernard continued, "May I ask why Ms. Galatea went to the Whispering Ripple waterfront? Was it because you were in a bad mood and wanted to clear your head?"

Katherine furrowed her brows and asked, "Does my mood have anything to do with the case?"

A deep look flashed in Bernard's eyes. "Of course. Please, Ms. Galatea, don't avoid my question and answer truthfully."

Katherine thought about her state of mind at the time, which was complicated and hard to describe, so she said, "I was just bored and went there to get some fresh air. Is that a problem?"

Bernard's lips curled slightly. "The night before last was when Scarlett had just returned from abroad. Your husband, Alex, as an old acquaintance of hers, specially prepared a grand floral welcome for her at Moonlight Manor. You were there and saw it all, right?"

Alex's pupils contracted as he slowly sipped water through the straw, his eyes fixed on Katherine's reaction.

Katherine recalled the pink tulips filling Moonlight Manor and the scene of Scarlett jumping out of a giant gift box to embrace Alex. She frowned unconsciously and remained silent.

"Why isn't Ms. Galatea speaking? Are you unwilling to admit that you saw your husband personally preparing a grand and romantic welcome gift for another girl?" Bernard's tone was gentle, but his words were aggressive.

Katherine felt not only Bernard's but also Alex's sharp, probing gaze fixed on her.

She gathered her scattered thoughts and looked at Bernard calmly. "Yes, I was at Moonlight Manor and saw what you described. So what?"

Bernard's polite smile vanished as he suddenly stood up. "So, from that moment, you saw Scarlett as your number one rival, felt jealous, and decided to hire someone to harm my sister in revenge. You arranged to meet Ethan at the Whispering Ripple waterfront and paid him ten thousand dollars to do it! Later, you were the first to inform Ethan about Scarlett being hospitalized, prompting him to come to the hospital late at night to assault her! Ms. Galatea, am I right?"

Katherine was taken aback and smirked, "No, you're overthinking it. I don't have the time or the money, and I have never met this Ethan you're talking about! Mr. Mitchell, if you can't produce any evidence and are just here to impose your subjective assumptions on me, this isn't a confrontation; it's an interrogation!"

"Ms. Galatea, don't worry. I'll show you the evidence right now." Bernard raised his hand, and his assistant stepped forward, handing him a phone.

He continued, "Do you remember the female blogger who parked her car on the blind path at the Whispering Ripple waterfront the night before last? While she was live-streaming at the Whispering Ripple, she accidentally captured the scene of you meeting Ethan. The live stream is recorded on this phone! There's video evidence, and the truth is right here!"
