Chapter 553 Back Again

Hearing that the woman's voice was the same as the one who answered Fiona's call for Alex last time, Katherine felt a sharp sting in her heart.

She didn't ask; she just waited quietly for him to explain something and voluntarily tell her who the woman next to him was.

However, there was no explanation.

Alex hurriedly said to her, "Be good, get some rest early. I have something to do and need to go out now."

Katherine didn't ask more, nor did she have the chance to, as Alex quickly hung up the phone, not even waiting for her to respond.

Listening to the busy tone on the phone, Katherine looked a bit dazed. Who was the woman on the other end?

Didn't he even intend to explain it to her?

Throwing the phone aside, Katherine curled up alone in the bed, hugging a pillow and shrinking into a small ball.

This was an action of extreme insecurity, a way to protect herself.

She spent almost every night like this when she was a child. It was only after growing up and gaining the ability to protect herself that she gradually changed and no longer slept in this position.

But at this moment, the insecurity from her childhood seemed to return, engulfing her.

She didn't even realize how she fell asleep.

When she opened her eyes in the morning, it was already bright outside. The sunlight shone through the white curtains, warm and cozy.

She moved her eyebrows and slowly opened her eyes, only to see a man's solid chest instead of the room's furnishings.

Katherine was stunned. First, she doubted she was dreaming, but then she instinctively reached out to touch the chest in front of her. The real sensation made her scalp tingle!

Although she had just woken up and her mind was not very clear, she knew she was not at home, and Alex was not in the country.

So, who was the man sleeping next to her, holding her?

Various possibilities flashed through Katherine's mind, and finally, the image of Jonathan, that boundary-less guy, settled in her mind.

Could that guy have sneaked in at night?

Katherine was startled by her speculation, then moved her body, lifted the quilt, and checked if her pajamas were still intact.

The result was disappointing; she wasn't wearing pajamas, and they were long gone!

The situation was already terrible!

She suddenly sat up and shouted irritably, "Ah!"

"What's wrong?" The familiar voice and tone made Katherine freeze, and then she turned her head to see Alex's handsome face!

Alex lay on his side on the bed, his handsome and cold face showing a bit of fatigue. He sat up and leaned closer to her. "What's wrong? Who did you think it was just now, hmm?"

Katherine, still shaken but also relieved, said, "I didn't think it was anyone. Waking up next to a guy, who wouldn't freak out??"

She almost thought she had been forced to cheat, but fortunately, she hadn't!

Alex raised his hand and petted her head almost indulgently, "Hmm, good girl, that's the right reaction."

Not seeing Alex for days, she was kinda thrown off by him petting her head.

Katherine frowned, fluttered her long lashes, and locked eyes with him. "Alex, when did you get back? How'd you end up here overnight?"

Alex leaned his forehead against hers, his voice all lazy and smooth. "Caught a flight last night. Why do you think I came here overnight? If you hadn't run off here, would I have come? Don't you wanna see me?"

His warm breath tickled her cheek, making her blush. But she wasn't exactly thrilled. "So, Alex, is this supposed to be a surprise for me?"

Alex just hummed in response.

Katherine tightened her brows. "Alex, I get that you meant well, but I gotta tell you, I don't like surprises. Next time you come back, give me a heads-up."

She really didn't dig surprises; she liked things planned out, no guessing games.

Alex spread his arms and pulled her close, resting his chin on her neck. He inhaled her scent like he couldn't get enough. "Okay, I'll let you know next time."

He was holding her so tight she could barely breathe. She struggled, but he wouldn't let go, so she gave up and pouted. "Alex, I have another question!"

His stubbled chin rubbed against her shoulder. "Hmm, shoot."

Katherine said irritably, "Where are my clothes? I remember falling asleep in my pajamas last night! How come they're gone now?"

Alex whispered in her ear, "I haven't seen you in days; I wanted to hold you properly. Clothes just got in the way."

Katherine said, "So, you just took off my clothes without asking?"

Alex chuckled, "Should I have woken you up to do it?"

Katherine's mouth twitched. "Are you sure you just held me all night?"

Alex didn't answer, but his silence said it all.

Thinking about it, Alex's hands probably didn't just hold her all night!

She was super annoyed at the thought of Alex touching her in her sleep. "Holding me all night should be enough! Can you let go now?"

"Not enough. Still not enough." Alex held her even tighter.

Katherine was getting frustrated. "I need to get dressed, wash up, and have breakfast! I'm starving!"

Alex's tired voice tried to soothe her. "I got to the airport at 2 AM and took another hour to get here. Be good. Stay with me a bit longer, and I'll take you to eat something delicious later, okay?"

Katherine was almost moved, but then the voice of the woman on the phone last night popped into her head.

Instantly, she didn't feel sorry for him anymore! "I've had enough sleep. Lying down too long makes me uncomfortable! Alex, if you're tired, just lie down and rest!" Katherine struggled, hoping to break free from his embrace.
