Chapter 695 I'm Very Sorry

Anthony was at a loss for words.

Suddenly, his colleagues burst into applause and cheers. They were trying to butter up Mr. Perez and also agreed with him. After all, who proposed without a diamond ring, right?

They'd been so caught up in the moment that they missed a little detail that Mr. Perez had just announced they were getting the day off.

Once Anthony popped the question, everyone could head home. Sweet deal.

Anthony was in a bind. He stood up, trying to hide his embarrassment, and grinned, "Mr. Perez is right, a proposal needs a diamond ring. Teresa, hang tight, I'll go get one right now. Just wait for me."

With that, he bolted out the door.

"Wait, Anthony, don't..." Teresa tried to stop him, but he was already gone.

The colleagues settled back down to finish their meal, waiting for Anthony to return with the ring.

Teresa turned to Frank, who was sitting next to her, and complained, "Why'd you have to make it so hard for him? He just graduated and started working. He can't afford a diamond ring."

Frank smirked, looking at her, "If he can't afford a ring, how's he got the guts to propose? Marriage costs money, you know. What? If I weren't here, would you have really said yes to him?"

Teresa hesitated, avoiding his eyes, "I don't know..."

Frank looked at her, feeling a bit helpless. "Teresa, feeling sorry for a guy will make you miserable. You feel bad for him because he's just starting out and can't afford a ring, but he doesn't feel bad for you coming to see him early in the morning without even getting you lunch."

Teresa looked at him, surprised, "What about you? Aren't you a guy too?"

Frank shrugged, "Same here. Any woman who feels sorry for me will end up heartbroken."

Teresa frowned but couldn't help but laugh. "Didn't expect you to be so self-aware."

Frank had always been self-aware and didn't mind the teasing. He joked, "Aren't you going home? Are you really waiting for Anthony to come back and propose?"

Teresa felt torn and blinked at him, "Frank."

Frank leaned in, "Yeah?"

Teresa said, "You should stop meddling in my business. It's causing me a lot of trouble."

When Anthony came back, only Frank was there, legs crossed, scrolling through his phone.

Anthony looked around the cafeteria but didn't see Teresa. He walked over and asked, "Mr. Perez, where's Teresa?"

Frank looked up and glanced at Anthony, "She left."

Anthony frowned and pulled out a small velvet box from his pocket. "Why'd she leave? I got her a ring."

Frank put down his phone, took the box, and opened it to reveal a large but synthetic moissanite stone.

He closed the box, placed it on the table, stood up with a smile, and patted Anthony on the shoulder. "Keep it. She won't like it."

Anthony's face turned red because he knew the ring was fake.

He couldn't afford a real diamond.

When he saw the big, shiny moissanite in the store, he thought no one would notice.

But judging by Anthony's reaction, he must've spotted the fake ring right away.

At the Mitchell Group, Bernard was deep into a thick file that he had Billy put together, all about Summit Innovations Group.

Sophia was Brent's daughter, and because of Alex, Sophia wouldn't let Katherine off the hook easily. So Bernard had to tread carefully. Billy had just handed over the file and was still there. He reported, "Mr. Mitchell, we've found someone snooping around about Ms. Galatea today. Probably Brent's people."

Bernard kept flipping through the file, asking, "Does Alex know?"

Billy nodded, "Perhaps. Mr. Melville has set up a bunch of plainclothes bodyguards around our place to keep Brent's people away from Ms. Galatea."

Bernard's voice turned cold, "If it weren't for him, Katherine wouldn't be in this mess."

Billy stayed quiet.

It was a tough situation. He knew Mr. Melville didn't want anything bad to happen to Ms. Galatea either.

Bernard said, "We can't just rely on the Melville family. We need our own security at home. For the next few days, keep Katherine inside and don't let any strangers in."

Billy nodded. "Got it, Mr. Mitchell. I've already set that up. But Ms. Galatea's health isn't great. The doctor said she might need to be hospitalized for delivery because of all the stress. She's home now, but she might need to go back to the hospital soon. The hospital's crowded and chaotic, and I'm worried..."

Bernard had already thought of this, so he cut in, "I know. When the time comes, I'll stay with Katherine in the hospital. You keep an eye on the company for a few days. Alright, you can go now."

"Yes, sir."

After Billy left, Bernard picked up his phone and called Alex.

The call connected quickly, but neither of them spoke first.

After a moment, Bernard spoke irritably, "What are you planning to do about Brent?"

Alex seemed to expect the question and replied calmly, "Don't worry, I have a plan. I'll meet him in the next couple of days."

Bernard sneered, "Meet him? Do you even know what kind of person Brent is? Aren't you afraid he'll lock you up and force you to marry Sophia?"

Sensing Bernard's sarcasm, Alex frowned but didn't want to argue. "You don't need to worry about me. I've dealt with Brent before. I'll be back in three days at most. In the meantime, please take care of Katherine for me. I'll owe you one."

Bernard scoffed, "Who cares about you? I don't need your gratitude. If Katherine didn't still care about you, I wouldn't let her marry a playboy like you."

Bernard's words were a direct jab, implying Alex's poor handling of relationships had put Katherine in danger.

Alex had no comeback since it was true. "I'm really sorry for making Katherine go through all this because of me, but please believe me, this time I'll fix everything. I won't let Katherine face any more danger or be targeted by bad people. Bernard, please take care of her these few days. If anything happens, call me right away."
