Chapter 939 Charles the Liar
Seeing Charles being so uncooperative, Scarlett's smile faded, and her voice grew stern. "Lift your head right now, or you'll regret it. I'm not going to ask again."
Charles, sensing the seriousness in her tone, reluctantly lifted his head, looking at Scarlett with fear.
Scarlett was his nightmare. She used to vent her emotions on him whenever she was unhappy. Although he was very young at the time and couldn't remember everything clearly, his body still had a conditioned reflex of fear.
He was very afraid of Scarlett.
Seeing Charles obediently lift his head, Scarlett's gloomy expression softened slightly. She put on a smile again, reached into the cage, and patted Charles's head. "That's right! That's my good boy!"
Even this small bit of physical contact made Charles tremble all over. He was extremely scared, really afraid that Scarlett would strangle him in the next second.
"Charles, why are you looking at me like that? Don't you miss me?" Scarlett asked Charles with a smile.
Charles's eyes were filled with fearful tears. He didn't dare to speak or move.
Scarlett was clearly not satisfied with his reaction. Losing her patience, she suddenly grabbed Charles's hair. "I'm asking you a question! Do you miss me? Answer me!"
Her voice was anything but gentle; it was a menacing roar.
Charles was terrified. Tears streamed down his face, but he didn't dare to make a sound.
He was so scared!
'Where is Mommy? Mommy, please come and save me.'
All he could think about was Katherine. Charles was still a child. After holding back for a little while, he couldn't help but burst into tears. "Mommy."
He was calling for Katherine. It was a child's instinct to call for their mommy when they were most afraid, but Scarlett seemed to misunderstand and thought Charles was calling her!
She immediately showed a satisfied smile. "Yes! That's right! I'm here, my good boy. Don't cry! Be good."
Scarlett let go of Charles's hair and instead wiped the tears from his face. Her voice became gentle again. "Charles, do you know how miserable I've been these past few years? You are my son. You must stand by my side and avenge me!"
Charles couldn't understand what she was saying. He only knew that his inner fear was growing.
"Come on, good boy! Call me Mommy again, and I'll let you out of the dog cage, okay?" Scarlett coaxed Charles with a smile.
Charles looked at her with fear and unfamiliarity, crying, "I-I'm scared."
Scarlett cupped his little face and coaxed, "Charles, don't be scared! Mommy is here! With me here, you don't need to be afraid of anything!"
Charles thought of what Katherine had taught them. 'Mommy always said to endure and pretend to compromise, not to confront real villains head-on. Live to fight another day.
Thinking of these words, it was as if he could hear Katherine's encouraging voice in his ears. He suddenly felt much calmer, sniffed, and stopped crying. "M-Mommy, I want to come out. Can you let me out?"
Even so, calling Scarlett Mommy still made him feel uncomfortable.
Seeing that Charles had finally become sensible and was no longer so afraid of her, Scarlett smiled. "Of course! But before Mommy lets you out, you have to answer some questions! If you answer them well, I'll let you out, okay?"
Charles cooperatively nodded, "Okay!"
Scarlett curled her lips and began to ask him, "Charles, tell me, how have you been living with the Melville family these past few years?"
Charles thought for a moment and replied, "It's been alright.
Hearing the word "alright," Scarlett's eyes immediately showed displeasure. "What do you mean 'alright'? Be more specific!"
From Scarlett's reaction, Charles could tell what answer she wanted to hear, so he adjusted his response accordingly. "Well, it's just so-so. I have food and shelter with the Melville family, but I can't compare to Dad's biological children. I'm always different from them and can't use the same things they do."
Lying felt really bad. Charles knew very well how well he had been treated by the Melville family over the years. Katherine treated him the same as George and Edith, very fairly.
Sure enough, this was the answer Scarlett wanted to hear. She showed a sympathetic look. "Poor boy, having to endure humiliation in their family! But you don't have to anymore. I'm back. From now on, you will be with me and live with me, okay?"
Charles nodded against his will, "Okay!"
Katherine said a true man can bend and stretch. To see Katherine again, he would temporarily cooperate with Scarlett!
Scarlett was satisfied and rubbed Charles's head. "Good boy! I knew you wouldn't betray me!"
Charles said, "Mommy, can you let me out now? It's so cold here, and I'm scared."
Scarlett smiled, "Don't be afraid! I'm here! No rush, I still have a few questions to ask you!"
Charles obediently said, "What questions?"
Scarlett's eyes gleamed with a bit of malice. "Charles, in the years I wasn't around, how was that bitch Katherine's relationship with Alex?"
Charles had already figured out how to respond to Scarlett's questions and shook his head. "Not very good!"
Scarlett's eyes lit up again. "Really? Tell me specifically, what are they like together? Do they often quarrel and have a much colder relationship?"
Charles was a bit annoyed. It was actually hard to answer this question, because Alex hadn't been living at home for the past few years and had just returned recently!
However, the terrifying Scarlett seemed unaware of the situation.
"Um... they often quarrel... their relationship isn't good! They often ignore each other and just do their own things!"
Hearing Charles's answer, Scarlett laughed out loud. Charles thought he had successfully fooled her, but Scarlett suddenly became fierce again, viciously grabbing his hair!
"You've learned to lie from Katherine! Trying to deceive me! I knew you weren't being honest! How could that bitch teach my child anything good? Charles, you've changed! You've learned to lie to me! Huh?"
