Chapter 860 Kid, Don't Be Used
Hearing a stranger suddenly mention his status as an adopted child, Charles felt a bit uncomfortable. He blinked and asked, "How do you know I'm adopted?"
The balloon seller, with an earnest expression, replied, "I've been selling balloons around here recently and overheard some neighbors talking. They mentioned the adopted child must be you, right? Last time you bought balloons, it seemed like you weren't very favored in this family."
Charles, clearly unhappy, responded, "I'm doing fine here! Mom and the rest of the family treat me very well. Please don't say things like that!"
Seeing that Charles was getting a bit anxious, the balloon seller tried to comfort him gently, "Baby, don't be upset. I was just a bit worried about you and wanted to check on you. If you really feel that this family treats you well, then just forget what I said."
Charles looked confused, "Worried? Worried about what?"
The balloon seller looked around to make sure no one was listening, then said softly, "Well, I'm worried that you might be mistreated in this family. I heard you were adopted, and sometimes, families adopt kids for the wrong reasons. Maybe your birth family couldn't take care of you, but I'm afraid this family might look down on you or even mistreat you. You might not know this because you're young, but some wealthy families adopt kids just to look good. I'm worried you might be one of those kids being used."
Charles shook his head, "Sir, thank you for your concern! I'm doing well here, and Mommy treats me very well!"
The balloon seller smiled and said, "Well, as long as you're not being mistreated, that's good. But I still have to remind you to be careful."
Charles tilted his head, "Be careful about what?"
The balloon seller replied, "In wealthy families, they often make a clear distinction between their own and others. The last time I saw your mommy, she had a son and a daughter with her. They must be her biological children, right? In the future, any good things or family inheritance will likely go to them, not to you, the adopted child. So you must study hard and become self-reliant when you grow up. Otherwise, if you ever get abandoned, you might end up like me—uneducated and selling balloons, working hard for little money."
Charles thought this person was overthinking and emphasized with a pout, "My mommy would never abandon me!"
He would study hard, not because he feared Katherine would drive him away, but because he genuinely loved learning and was curious about knowledge!
The balloon seller said, "Do you really think your mommy won't abandon you? Look around. You've been out here picking up the kite for a while, and your mommy hasn't sent anyone to look for you. It shows she doesn't really care about you, at least not like she cares about her biological children. Otherwise, why didn't she send her own children to pick up the kite? It's not wrong to be more cautious."
Charles looked around and indeed saw no one coming to find him.
But he still believed Katherine wasn't the kind of person the balloon seller described!
Katherine was very kind and always treated him as her own. He was sure of that!
When Charles wanted to look up and refute the balloon seller, he found that the small gate around the yard was already empty.
All he saw was a large bunch of balloons gradually moving away over the wall!
Charles stood there in a daze for a while, then turned around and went back inside with the kite he had picked up.
On the way, he didn't encounter anyone coming to look for him, which made him start to doubt. He had talked with the balloon seller for quite a while, so why wasn't Katherine worried about him?
It wasn't until Charles walked back inside alone that the two maids who had come to look for him hurriedly ran from the backyard to the front yard.
"Where did Charles go to pick up the kite? We haven't seen him!"
"Maybe he's already inside! Let's go in and check!"
The two maids hurried inside and saw Charles holding the kite and going upstairs. They were relieved and didn't disturb him.
Charles took the kite to Katherine's room and knocked on the door.
After waiting for a while, it was George who came to open the door.
Seeing the kite, George grabbed it excitedly. "Finally got it back! We need to keep it safe. Next time we go to the park, I'll be the coolest person there!"
Edith, in the room, made a gagging noise, clearly showing her disdain for George's enthusiasm.
Charles entered the room, looked around, and didn't see Katherine. He asked, "Where's Mommy?"
George had already run off with the kite to find a place to put it.
Edith, sitting on the couch eating snacks, replied, "Mommy is taking a bath. She said she felt hot and wanted to cool off with a shower."
"Okay," Charles responded and sat down next to Edith, quietly waiting for Katherine to finish her bath.
Seeing Edith eating a snack they all liked, Charles felt a bit hungry too. He saw another identical pack of snacks on the table and reached out to grab it, but before he could touch it, George ran over and snatched it away!
George, having put away the kite, grabbed a pack of snacks and ran to the balcony to play with his paper airplane.
Charles's hand was left empty, feeling a bit awkward. He looked around and saw no extra snacks.
Were there only two packs of snacks?
Where was his?
At this moment, Katherine had finished her bath and was standing in front of the bathroom mirror, looking at the marks Alex had left on her neck, collarbone, and chest, with a complex expression.
Alex must have done it on purpose!
Deliberately making her feel embarrassed in front of her family. Alex was so awful!
After drying herself and putting on clean clothes, Katherine found some makeup to cover those embarrassing marks.
She had to cover them up, or else the kids would notice, and she wouldn't know how to explain!
Especially Edith, who was very curious and hard to fool!
After tidying herself up, Katherine opened the bathroom door and saw Edith and George eating snacks, while Charles sat quietly on the side, not saying a word.
Seeing this, Katherine's expression turned serious, "Who told you two to start eating? There were only two packs left. Didn't I say to wait until I came out so I could divide them among the three of you?"
Edith sucked her finger, "Mommy, you took too long. I've already finished mine! George still has some, let him share with Charles."
