Chapter 668 What's Wrong?
Sunny rubbed his head, still smarting from Bernard's hit, and blurted out, "Bernard, what's up with Alex?"
Bernard's face got all serious. "When we go in, don't mention what Sophia just said in front of Katherine, and definitely don't bring up Alex!"
Bernard dodged the question, making Sunny even more uneasy.
Were Ambrosia and Bernard hiding something from Katherine?
When Sunny and Bernard walked in, Katherine had already finished lunch and was lounging on the sofa, scrolling through her phone, looking bored.
"Katherine," Bernard called out softly.
Katherine looked up, a bit surprised. "Mr. Mitchell, why are you back so early today?"
Bernard sat down next to her with a smile. "Not much going on at the office this afternoon, so I thought I'd come keep you company."
Katherine shrugged. "No need to trouble yourself. I'm fine on my own; I don't need company."
Bernard was used to her coldness by now, so it didn't bother him.
Katherine glanced at Sunny, who had followed Bernard in, and asked, "Did that woman leave?"
Sunny nodded. "Yeah, she's gone."
Katherine asked casually, "Did she say what she wanted with me?"
Sunny felt a bit guilty but quickly shook his head after Bernard shot him a look. "No, she was just bored and looking for trouble!"
Katherine figured that sounded about right. What good could come from Sophia looking for her?
Just then, Katherine got a notification on her phone. The money she had transferred to Alex had been returned because it had timed out.
Seeing the returned transfer, Katherine frowned. Could Alex be any more difficult?
She transferred the money again with a message: [Please accept it!]
After waiting a while, Alex still didn't accept the money or reply to her message.
Katherine felt a tightness in her chest, an indescribable frustration.
She thought for a moment and then asked Bernard, "Mr. Mitchell, do you know what Alex has been up to these past few days?"
Bernard's usually composed face showed a moment of stiffness. "Why are you asking about him all of a sudden? Didn't you say you didn't want to see him?"
Sunny also tensed up, thinking Katherine might have sensed something. Though he didn't know what was going on either.
Katherine said, "I don't want to see him, but I want to pay him for the painting. He hasn't accepted the transfer."
Hearing this, Bernard subtly breathed a sigh of relief. "If he doesn't accept the money, just consider the painting a gift from him. The price of that painting is nothing to him."
Katherine frowned. "Regardless of whether the money means anything to him, I don't want to owe him. We have no relationship now, and I can't just take his things for free."
Bernard looked at Katherine's stubborn expression, his gaze full of complexity. After a long while, he gave a faint smile. "Alright, I'll have someone send a check to the Melville Group later."
Katherine wanted to draw a clear line with Alex but didn't intend to owe Bernard either.
"Then I'll just transfer the money to you!" Katherine said, grabbing her phone to transfer the money.
But Bernard took her phone and set it aside. "Alright, don't mess with your phone too much; it's got radiation."
Meanwhile, Sunny was standing nearby, secretly messaging Ambrosia to confirm if what Sophia had said was true. The answer came back affirmative.
Ambrosia hadn't told him upfront, but she didn't lie either. Since he asked, she admitted it.
Looking at Ambrosia's reply, Sunny stared at his phone, his hands trembling.
Katherine noticed Sunny's odd behavior. "What are you daydreaming about?"
Feeling guilty, Sunny rubbed his reddened eyes. "Nothing."
Katherine narrowed her eyes. "What's wrong with you? Did Ambrosia dump you?"
Sunny knew he was a terrible actor, so he turned his face away. "No! I have exams coming up, so I need to study!"
With that, he turned and hurriedly ran upstairs.
Katherine found it all a bit strange.
Bernard said, "Don't mind him. He's always like that."
Katherine frowned, feeling quite puzzled.
"Oh, by the way, Katherine, I had someone buy some maternity supplies for you. They should be delivered soon. Let me know if you like them or if there's anything else you need."
Katherine said, "I've already bought everything I need. Mr. Mitchell, you should return them."
Bernard shook his head. "What you bought is yours, but what I bought is a token of my sentiment. It's always good to have more of these things. They will come in handy."
Knowing Bernard wouldn't return the items, Katherine decided not to argue anymore.
She planned to transfer the money for the painting to him later, along with the other money.
Meanwhile, Sophia had been dragged to the street corner by the Mitchell family's servants.
Sophia looked at the strong servants of the Mitchell family and thought that if she went back, she would just be dragged out again.
But she didn't want to give up such a good opportunity!
This was the best chance to cause trouble for the baby Katherine was carrying.
Previously, she hadn't done anything to Katherine's baby because it was hard to do so without leaving traces.
She had even seriously considered that if Katherine's baby was born, she would raise it with Alex. After all, Alex also had Charles!
It didn't matter. She could slowly have children with Alex later.
But she still felt a bit repulsed by the idea. Of course, it would be best if Katherine's baby didn't exist!
If she waited any longer, Katherine's baby might really be born safely.
Sandra valued Katherine's baby very much!
The child adopted by the Melville family could at most enjoy good food, drink, and education, but would never have inheritance rights.
However, Katherine's baby would be the first grandchild of the Melville family, and it would easily threaten the future children she and Alex might have!
Sophia stood at the street corner, pondering for a long time. She then made up her mind and went directly to a nearby print shop.
The clerk asked her, "Miss, what do you need?"
Sophia said, "I need some flyers printed. How soon can they be ready?"
