Alex's eyes widened in surprise. "Wait, you're not pushing me away anymore? Katherine, if I don't fix this mess, how can I even deserve you?"
Katherine frowned, her serious look making it clear where she stood. "Yeah, it needs fixing, but it's not urgent right now. Wait until after I have the baby, then you can go."
Alex noticed her worry and squinted slightly, asking, "Why?"
Katherine lowered her lashes, awkwardly voicing her concern, "What if something happens to you, and I go into labor? I wouldn't be able to help you."
Alex looked at her, his usually cold eyes softening.

Today was the first time he felt someone wanted to protect him unconditionally, and it was Katherine who sincerely wanted to protect him.

"In three days, I will definitely be back on time. I talked to the doctor, and he said your due date is at least a week away. I'll be by your side in the delivery room to welcome our child together." Alex added.
Katherine still didn't want him to go. "Are you sure you can solve the problem in three days? You couldn't do it quickly before, so why now?"
Alex patiently replied, "I've already spoken with Brent on the phone. He agreed to meet with me personally. Katherine, I promise you, and I will never break my word. Won't you trust me one more time?"
Katherine didn't doubt Alex's words right now. He definitely planned to be back in three days.
What she worried about was that Sophia and Brent might not be so straightforward and could have set a trap for Alex.
After all, Markovia was Sophia and Brent's home turf. Even though the Melville family had some influence there, it couldn't compare to the extensive reach of Sophia and Brent, who had been settled there for years.
Plus, the apple didn't fall far from the tree. Given Sophia's character, Brent might not be any better.

Alex attentively served her, adding food to her plate.

Alex, while adding food to her plate, answered truthfully, "The fake death was to lure out the mastermind behind the scenes and expose their identity, but I didn't expect you to risk finding me."
Katherine frowned, "So, did I ruin your plan?"
Alex smiled, "No, but next time, don't do anything so dangerous for me, okay?"
Katherine didn't respond and asked again, "So, the person who kidnapped me twice, Carl, isn't the mastermind? There's someone else?"
Alex nodded, "I'm really sorry for dragging you into the Melville family's mess, putting you in danger and making you a target for those people."
Katherine didn't mind. "What's the big deal? I'm already targeted and can't escape it! Alex, you could have told me the truth from the beginning. I wouldn't have overthought and suspected you."
Alex sighed slightly, looking helpless, and said in a deep voice, "I know you. If I told you the truth, you wouldn't be afraid of those people and wouldn't stay home as I asked. You'd investigate on your own, drawing more attention from them."
That was true; she wouldn't be afraid and would indeed investigate.
Alex then used a coaxing tone, "Katherine, promise me, stay home for these three days and wait for me."
Katherine agreed in a calm voice. "Okay, I know."
Alex had just clearly told her that there was a mastermind. Since he was determined to go abroad for three days, she didn't want him to worry about her safety during that time.
Actually, she now felt that Alex, who seemed mature, steady, and decisive, was quite pitiful.
