Chapter 697 Not Disgusted with Me Anymore
Alex's eyes widened in surprise. "Wait, you're not pushing me away anymore? Katherine, if I don't fix this mess, how can I even deserve you?"
Katherine frowned, her serious look making it clear where she stood. "Yeah, it needs fixing, but it's not urgent right now. Wait until after I have the baby, then you can go."
Alex noticed her worry and squinted slightly, asking, "Why?"
Katherine lowered her lashes, awkwardly voicing her concern, "What if something happens to you, and I go into labor? I wouldn't be able to help you."
Alex looked at her, his usually cold eyes softening.
Since he was young, Alex had always handled problems on his own. Everyone around him relied on him to solve their issues. He never felt like anyone had his back.
His parents had split up early due to emotional and ethical issues, leaving him behind as the product of their union.
From a young age, Alex was told by his elders that he had big responsibilities. He couldn't cry, couldn't be weak, and had to be strong to support the Melville family.
Even when he fell and got hurt as a kid, no one in the family would help him up.
They'd tell him that if he couldn't handle minor injuries, how could he stand on his own in the future and lead the family business?
They'd demand that he endure the pain and get up by himself.
Today was the first time he felt someone wanted to protect him unconditionally, and it was Katherine who sincerely wanted to protect him.
It sounded a bit ridiculous but was very heartwarming.
He was indeed lucky to have found such a treasure in the café that day.
Alex gently pursed his lips, raised his rough hand towards her small face, but stopped just before touching her.
"I don't have the right to touch you yet. When I come back after solving that problem, can I hold you then?"
Katherine frowned slightly, pursed her lips, and said nothing.
Actually, even if Alex hugged her now, she wouldn't refuse!
Katherine wondered, 'Hadn't he always hugged me first before saying anything? Why is he being so polite today?'
Alex continued, "If I don't go to Markovia now and resolve the issue thoroughly, who knows what extreme actions Brent might take for Sophia? So, I can't delay any longer."
"In three days, I will definitely be back on time. I talked to the doctor, and he said your due date is at least a week away. I'll be by your side in the delivery room to welcome our child together." Alex added.
Katherine still didn't want him to go. "Are you sure you can solve the problem in three days? You couldn't do it quickly before, so why now?"
Alex patiently replied, "I've already spoken with Brent on the phone. He agreed to meet with me personally. Katherine, I promise you, and I will never break my word. Won't you trust me one more time?"
Katherine didn't doubt Alex's words right now. He definitely planned to be back in three days.
What she worried about was that Sophia and Brent might not be so straightforward and could have set a trap for Alex.
After all, Markovia was Sophia and Brent's home turf. Even though the Melville family had some influence there, it couldn't compare to the extensive reach of Sophia and Brent, who had been settled there for years.
Plus, the apple didn't fall far from the tree. Given Sophia's character, Brent might not be any better.
Rumor had it, that Brent was ruthless and would stop at nothing to get what he wanted.
Katherine wasn't distrustful, just worried!
But she could see that Alex was determined to go, and stopping him seemed impossible.
"I believe you." She spoke calmly and firmly, then added, "But I don't trust Sophia and Brent!"
Alex, of course, understood her concerns. He wasn't one to be careless.
"Don't worry, I know what I'm doing."
Katherine knew she couldn't persuade him, so she didn't say anything and picked up her fork to eat.
Alex attentively served her, adding food to her plate.
As Katherine ate, she suddenly remembered something and asked, "By the way, what's the deal with your fake death? You're fine, so why spread the news that you were blown up?"
Alex, while adding food to her plate, answered truthfully, "The fake death was to lure out the mastermind behind the scenes and expose their identity, but I didn't expect you to risk finding me."
Katherine frowned, "So, did I ruin your plan?"
Alex smiled, "No, but next time, don't do anything so dangerous for me, okay?"
Katherine didn't respond and asked again, "So, the person who kidnapped me twice, Carl, isn't the mastermind? There's someone else?"
Alex nodded, "I'm really sorry for dragging you into the Melville family's mess, putting you in danger and making you a target for those people."
Katherine didn't mind. "What's the big deal? I'm already targeted and can't escape it! Alex, you could have told me the truth from the beginning. I wouldn't have overthought and suspected you."
Alex sighed slightly, looking helpless, and said in a deep voice, "I know you. If I told you the truth, you wouldn't be afraid of those people and wouldn't stay home as I asked. You'd investigate on your own, drawing more attention from them."
That was true; she wouldn't be afraid and would indeed investigate.
Alex then used a coaxing tone, "Katherine, promise me, stay home for these three days and wait for me."
Katherine agreed in a calm voice. "Okay, I know."
Alex had just clearly told her that there was a mastermind. Since he was determined to go abroad for three days, she didn't want him to worry about her safety during that time.
Actually, she now felt that Alex, who seemed mature, steady, and decisive, was quite pitiful.
After hearing about Alex's past from Teresa yesterday, she thought his parents were both selfish. One sought pleasure irresponsibly, and the other abandoned their child after being disappointed in the marriage.
