Chapter 558 What Are You Feeling Sorry for Her About?
Charles was hanging in the air, thanks to Alex lifting him up. His feet were just swinging there, and he looked all confused, blinking those big eyes of his. "Katherine, it's Katherine," he said.
Alex's face got all serious, and he took a deep breath, staying quiet. That stern look made Charles squirm a bit.
Katherine saw this and quickly scooped Charles into her arms. "What the heck, Alex? You're scaring the kid!"
Alex didn't budge. "He called you Katherine. You don't see a problem with that?"
Katherine rolled her eyes at him and gently patted Charles's head. "Ignore him, buddy. You can call me whatever you want."
Charles finally started to relax, nodding and resting his head on Katherine's shoulder.
Alex still looked annoyed about the whole name thing, but seeing Katherine being all motherly with Charles, his expression softened. He gently cupped Katherine's face. "Are you really okay with taking care of Charles?"
Katherine scoffed. "Do I have a choice? I might not know how to be a stepmom yet, but I'll figure it out. It's gotta be better than leaving him with Alice!"
Alex looked at her with admiration and gave her a light kiss on the forehead. "Thank you."
Thank you? For what?
Katherine didn't think she had done anything special, but that kiss left her a bit stunned, her heart doing a little flip. "Alright, I'm taking Charles out for breakfast. You change and join us later, okay?"
With that, she walked off with Charles, her face hard to read.
Alex watched her go, narrowing his eyes. What was up with Katherine? She seemed to be pulling away from him more and more.
Once outside, Katherine let out a soft sigh. She had almost fallen for Alex's gentle act, but she wasn't about to forget everything that had happened!
Charles looked up at her with those big, curious eyes. "Kate, does Daddy like you?"
Kate? Well, that was new. But...
Katherine paused, feeling a bit awkward. "Do you know what 'like' means?"
Charles nodded seriously, using the few words he knew. "Kiss... kiss means like..."
So, he had seen Alex kiss her.
She wasn't sure how to explain this to such a young kid!
Charles blinked again, looking a bit frustrated. "Daddy doesn't like Mommy, doesn't kiss Mommy. Mommy gets mad and hits me."
Katherine's heart broke at his words. The "Mommy" he was talking about was Scarlett.
Scarlett had tried everything to win Alex's heart, and whenever he ignored her, she took it out on Charles.
Poor kid.
Charles was so young and didn't get adult stuff. He hadn't done anything wrong but had to deal with Scarlett's anger, leaving him with some serious emotional scars.
Katherine gently patted his head. "Don't worry, kiddo. No one's gonna hit you anymore."
Charles snuggled into Katherine's shoulder, feeling safer than he ever had before.
For some reason, he trusted everything Katherine said.
When they got to the living room of the Mitchell family Summer Villa, the table was already loaded with a fancy breakfast spread.
Jonathan was there, eating alone. He looked up and smiled, "Why are you here alone with Charles? Where's Alex?"
Katherine walked over with Charles, found a seat a few spots away from Jonathan, and said, "He's changing clothes. He'll be here soon."
"Oh." Jonathan took a sip of his milk, looking a bit lost.
Katherine wasn't in the mood to chat with Jonathan. She put Charles in a chair and started feeding him a piece of bread.
Charles was still young and hadn't been taught to eat properly, so he needed someone to help him out.
Lately, Charles had been eating with his hands. Alice's attitude towards him was all over the place, and she often didn't have the patience to feed him.
It had been a long time since anyone had taken care of him like this. Charles cherished it, opening his mouth wide to take a bite of the bread Kate fed him, thinking it was the best thing he had ever eaten!
"Katherine." Jonathan's voice rang out again, with a hint of a smirk.
Katherine wiped Charles's mouth with a napkin, not even looking at Jonathan, and replied coolly, "Yeah, what is it?"
Jonathan smirked, "Didn't see this coming."
"See what? Alex coming back today?" Katherine shot back nonchalantly.
"No." Jonathan smiled in a way that made her skin crawl, "I didn't expect you to be so chill, treating a kid Alex adopted with another woman like your own."
Katherine paused and turned to look at him, "I wouldn't say treating him as my own, but I do feel sorry for him. Mr. Mostow, do you have a problem with that?"
Jonathan shook his head with a smile, "No problem. It's just that while you feel sorry for Charles, I feel sorry for you."
Katherine's brow furrowed slightly, not getting what Jonathan was hinting at. Just as she was about to ask, Alex's deep, cold voice cut in. "What do you feel sorry for her about?"
Jonathan's expression stiffened for a moment, then he smiled again, looking up at Alex who had just walked in. "I feel sorry that Katherine has to take care of someone else's kid before her own is even born."
"My wife, I'll take care of her myself. No need for anyone else to feel sorry," Alex said calmly, sitting down next to Katherine and taking Charles into his arms to feed him. He gently told Katherine, "I'll handle this. You eat your breakfast."
Katherine didn't argue and started eating her breakfast.
Jonathan shrugged, took a sip of his milk, and changed the topic with a smile, "Alex, have you finished your business abroad?"
Alex continued feeding Charles and replied, "Not yet. I came home to spend time with Katherine. I'll go back in a few days. Do you need something from me?"
