Chapter 405 Just Kidding

"I said—" Katherine's eyes looked like a vengeful ghost's, with a creepy smile, "—I want your life!"

As she increased her tone, her hand sprang up and reached out!

Alice thought she was going to strangle her and stumbled back in fear, almost falling, but someone caught her.

"Ma'am, are you alright?" It was Katherine, looking genuinely concerned.

Alice, still shaken, looked at Katherine, who now had a warm, bright smile, not creepy at all.

How weird! Alice thought she might have imagined it, still catching her breath. "What were you trying to do just now?"

Katherine giggle for a while, "Ma'am, I'm sorry. You said you were giving me a tenfold raise, and I got so excited I played a joke on you!"

Alice felt offended. After steadying herself, she pushed Katherine away and straightened her clothes. "Ms. Galatea, I hope you won't be so humorous when tutoring my son!"

Katherine shook her finger. "Mrs. Mitchell, you don't get it! Learning should be fun so kids actually enjoy it and learn better!"

Alice frowned, not getting her approach. "Fine, just get results!"

Katherine nodded. "I understand. I won't let you down. I'll improve your son's grades!"

That's more like it!

Alice warned, "Also, the Mitchell family matters are none of your business, so forget what you heard in my son's room!"

Katherine mimed zipping her lips. "Don't worry, Ma'am, I'm very tight-lipped!!"

Alice added, "And don't let Bernard know about the extra money I'm giving you!"

Katherine made an “OK” gesture. "Got it!"

Alice waved her off. "Alright, go help Sunny with his homework, or he won't finish it!"

"Okay!"

Katherine left with a hint of a sarcastic smile.

After she left, Alice patted her chest, still shaken, and let out a long breath.

That tutor was really a bit crazy; she almost freaked her out!

After calming down, Alice came out of the guest room and ran into Scarlett.

Scarlett asked, "Mom? Why are you coming out of this guest room? Where's Dad? Isn't he with you?"

Mentioning him made Alice upset.

She had pretended to be sick and asked Scarlett to find Edwin. Scarlett brought him.

Edwin came, but as soon as he entered, he asked where she felt unwell and wanted to call an ambulance.

She wasn't actually unwell. It was just an act. If the ambulance came and found nothing wrong, it would be hard to explain.

So she said she just felt a bit dizzy, nothing else.

Edwin pulled up a chair, sat by the bed, and got lost in a thick religious book.

Sometimes, Alice wondered if he preferred reading over paying attention to his still charming wife!

Eventually, she couldn't keep up the act and said she felt better and needed some fresh air.

Edwin didn't show any extra concern.

Their marriage felt like widowhood!

But she couldn't share her inner emptiness and physical needs with her daughter, so she just shook her head. "It's nothing. Your dad's in the room reading! Scarlett, what are you up to?"

Scarlett was annoyed. "Mom, Charles is getting more disobedient. He cries for the nanny as soon as I go in. It makes me so mad I want to send him back to the orphanage!"

Alice patted her daughter's shoulder. "It's not surprising. How could an adopted child be close to you? Don't worry about him. Just have your own child in the future!"

Scarlett's face changed. She quickly looked around, then pulled Alice back into the guest room. "Mom, keep your voice down. If people find out I'm not actually infertile, how can I use that to hold onto Alex?"

Alice smiled. "I know, I'm more careful than you! No one's around. Everyone's busy preparing for the dinner party for the distinguished guest! Speaking of which, I wonder who could make your grandparents take it so seriously!"

Scarlett sighed in relief. "I heard they are Grandpa's saviour. We have to join them for dinner tonight."

Alice was indifferent. "Who knows what kind of person they are, making our whole family join them! Do they deserve it??"

Scarlett didn't care about the guest. "Whoever he is, if Grandparents want us there, we will be. It's just a meal! Mom, the issue with Alex is more important now. I can't reach him; my calls go straight to his assistant. What should I do?"

Alice frowned. "Alex isn't taking your calls? What's going on? Hasn't he always been at your beck and call?"

Scarlett, overwhelmed with the adopted child, hadn't had a chance to tell her mother what had happened recently. She took this opportunity to explain everything.

After listening, Alice narrowed her eyes. "It's because of that Katherine again! She managed to make Alex so obedient. She must be very cunning! Scarlett, you underestimated her before!"

Scarlett was anxious. "Mom, I know I underestimated her! But now is not the time to reflect. You have to help me think of a solution! If Alex keeps listening to Katherine and stops taking my calls or meeting me, how can I marry into the Melville family and make you proud?"

Alice held her daughter's shoulders, comforting her. "Scarlett, don't worry, let me think."

Scarlett couldn't calm down. "Mom, think fast! Katherine is pregnant with Alex's child! If she gives birth, I'll never have a chance again!"
