Chapter 945 Katherine Faint
Hearing Charles ask this question in his hoarse voice, Scarlett chuckled disdainfully as she walked down the mountain, "Why do you think? Because you're the child I adopted! You're mine, and no matter how bad you are, you're still mine. I won't allow anyone to take what's mine!"
Charles's eyes were filled with helplessness and despair. "But you don't even like children, and you don't like me. Why can't you let me stay with my dad and mom?"
Realizing that the "Mom" Charles referred to wasn't her, Scarlett suddenly became furious and threw Charles to the ground with great force.
"What did you say? Who did you just call Mom?"
The mountain path was rugged and full of thorns. When Charles fell, his exposed skin was pierced by sharp plants, causing him to groan in pain and frown.
But that wasn't the end. Scarlett came over and kicked him hard. "You little brat, who did you just call Mom? Tell me!"
Charles could only cry silently, unable to make any sound.
Scarlett had no intention of letting him off. She stomped on his stomach with force. "You're a traitor too! If I hadn't adopted you from abroad back then, you'd still be in that poor orphanage, starving and possibly dead from some infectious disease. You wouldn't be here today!
You ungrateful brat now are so opportunistic. You don't acknowledge me, your adoptive mother who brought you back, but you call that bitch 'Mom'! What makes her your mom? Did she give birth to you or adopt you?"
Charles's eyes bulged as he felt he couldn't survive any longer. With his last bit of strength, he retorted, "She... she treats me well."
Scarlett became even angrier upon hearing this. "She treats you well? Why would she treat you well? She's just pretending! That bitch is best at pretending. She'll do anything to secure her position as Mrs. Melville. Do you really think she sees you as her son? She has her own son, why would she treat you, a little bastard, as her son?"
Charles's eyes were red, stubbornly defending the Katherine he held in high regard. "She's good. Even if she doesn't see me as her son, at least... she respects me... she's better than you, much better."
Charles's final words completely enraged Scarlett. She gritted her teeth and kicked Charles twice more. "Fine! You think she's better than me? Then I'll grant your wish! I'll show you just how bad I can be! Since you don't acknowledge me as your adoptive mother, I'll just send you straight to hell!"
As she spoke, Scarlett continued to kick and beat the five-year-old boy.
After what felt like an eternity, Charles finally stopped moving, and Scarlett stopped.
She panted heavily, trying to steady her breath, and angrily said, "Alright, stop pretending! Get up!"
However, Charles didn't respond at all.
Scarlett frowned, squatted down, and checked Charles's breath, finding none.
Dead? Was Charles really that fragile? She remembered that he wasn't this weak when she used to beat him!
She had planned to use him, but now that was impossible!
Scarlett felt no sorrow or regret for the loss of Charles's young life, only disdain and dissatisfaction.
Her mind was filled with thoughts of her own interests.
Since she got out of prison, she knew she was no longer the same. The aura of being the Mitchell family's young lady was gone. Even if she returned to the Mitchell family, she would only face rejection and disdain.
So she didn't go back. She worked outside temporarily, planning how to take revenge on Katherine, who had caused her current situation.
She had observed the Melville family for a long time and found that Charles, whom she had once adopted, was being raised by Katherine. At first, she was surprised, but later she thought Katherine was using Charles to pretend to be virtuous.
So, she wanted to take Charles back from Katherine.
She thought that since the Melville family had taken in Charles, it meant they valued him and accepted him. As long as she could control Charles like before, the Melville family wouldn't dare to disrespect her or deny her benefits.
Most importantly, with Charles by her side, her connection with Alex would still exist, and maybe they could even rekindle their old feelings!
Unfortunately, Charles turned out to be so fragile. He died after just a few kicks!
As Scarlett was pondering how to deal with Charles's body, a sudden barking startled her!
Why were there dogs in the mountains?
Were they dogs or wolves?
Damn, she didn't have any weapons for self-defense.
Without thinking too much, Scarlett looked around and quickly ran down the mountain path!
Whether it was wild dogs or wolves, they could eat Charles's body first to satisfy their hunger, and she could take the opportunity to escape!
The barking grew closer.
Several police dogs emerged from different directions, heading towards Charles lying on the ground!
Finding Charles, the police dogs barked furiously!
Following one of the police dogs, Katherine and her group quickened their pace to the front!
Seeing Charles lying on the ground, Katherine collapsed. She squatted down, touched Charles's forehead, and shook him!
"Charles! Charles! It's Mom! Mom is here! Wake up! Charles! Open your eyes and look at Mom! Mom came to save you! Charles..."
No matter how Katherine shook Charles or called out to him, he didn't respond at all!
Katherine finally feared the worst. She reached out to check Charles's breath, and when she got no response, she fainted from the overwhelming shock!
Alex caught Katherine with one hand and reached out to check Charles's breath with the other, his brow furrowing. "Quick! Where's the medical team? Hurry up and save the kid!"
The medical personnel, who had come with the police, immediately stepped forward to check on Charles and perform emergency measures.
Sunny watched everything unfold, unable to believe that Scarlett had done this!
Charles was once a child Scarlett had adopted and loved. How could she do this to him? This was a young, vibrant life!
The last time Sunny saw Charles, he was happily playing with George and Edith. In just a few days, Charles had ended up like this!
Bernard calmly surveyed the surroundings and instructed his subordinates to search the area for any other suspicious individuals.
