Chapter 467 She Has a Bad Reputation

The older woman, Camila, clutched her daughter's hand, her face full of pain, and started crying.

"Ma'am, here's the deal: My daughter and I live in Whispering Pines Village. I'm Camila Yates, and my daughter Fern Yates went to high school with Katherine."

Katherine, sitting next to Sandra and sipping tea, looked up. She recognized Fern but they weren't close.

Sandra replied, "Yeah, they were classmates. So?"

Camila continued, "In high school, Katherine had terrible grades. She skipped classes and hung out with troublemakers."

Sandra frowned, finding it hard to believe. She glanced at her well-behaved Katherine, thinking she couldn't be that kind of girl.

Katherine stayed calm, sipping her coffee with a slight smirk.

Camila went on, "On the day of the SAT, Fern attended every subject on time. She was always the top student. But when we checked the SAT scores, Fern's results were missing."

"We went to the school for answers, but they brushed us off. We had no power, so we had to accept it. Since then, Fern stayed home to farm with us."

Camila choked up, and Fern sobbed beside her.

Sandra felt sympathy but was puzzled. "Fern didn't get her SAT scores. What does that have to do with Katherine?"

Camila looked at Sandra indignantly. "It has everything to do with her! Katherine took Fern's SAT scores and went to Janetrick University, leaving Fern with no school to attend!"

Sandra was shocked. "What? How is that possible?"

Camila wiped her tears. "We recently found out the truth! Katherine didn't even go to the exam! Her rich boyfriend's father used his connections to switch the scores, sending Katherine to Janetrick University while Fern was left with nothing. Fern's future was stolen!"

Camila hugged Fern, both crying bitterly.

Sandra, unsure what to say, felt Katherine's warm hand on hers. Katherine smiled faintly and turned to Camila and Fern.

"Ma'am, I won't comment on whether what you said is true. Let me ask you a few questions first, okay?"

Camila lifted her head from Fern's shoulder, wiping her tears with her sleeve. "Ask away! Let's see how you can argue against the facts!"

Katherine smiled calmly. "You said Fern was the top student. So, after not getting her SAT scores and no fair explanation from the school, why didn't you let her repeat a year? If she was as excellent as you claimed, she could have retaken the SAT and possibly gotten into Janetrick University or a better one. Even if she failed, she could have gone to a community college. She didn't have to come back home to farm, right?"

Camila's face changed, glaring at Katherine. "It's easy for you to say. Doesn't repeating a year cost money? Doesn't community college cost money? We worked hard to support her SAT attempt, hoping she could change her fate, only for you to take advantage!"

Katherine replied, "Going to college also costs money. By your logic, even if Fern got into college, it seems you wouldn't be willing to spend money to let her attend?"

Camila stiffened. "Fern is a good student. If she got into college, she would get a full scholarship, and college would be free!"

Katherine laughed.

Camila got anxious. "What are you laughing at?"

Katherine chuckled, waving her hand. "Let me ask you another question. You said I didn't go to the exam on SAT day. Do you have any evidence? If I wanted to go to college, why wouldn't I go to the exam?"

Camila frowned. "Because you were a struggling student and wouldn't pass even if you went! Plus, with your wealthy boyfriend's family backing you, you knew you could get into Janetrick University without taking the SAT, so you were fearless!"

Katherine sipped her tea. "Without evidence, everything you say is baseless. I can sue you for defamation."

Camila gritted her teeth, at a loss for words. She glared at Katherine, then looked at Fern. After a moment, she seemed to make up her mind.

"Katherine, I'm only sparing you some dignity because you're a girl. Don't force me to reveal all your dirty secrets!"

Katherine smiled indifferently. "I don't need you to spare my dignity. Just say what you want to say!"

Camila pointed at her aggressively. "Because a few days before the SAT, you went to get an abortion. Your body hadn't recovered, so you couldn't go to the exam!"

Sandra, who had been listening calmly, frowned deeply. "Abortion?"

Camila nodded. "Katherine had an abortion, and it wasn't the first time! She was very young but had a bad reputation in our area. Her wealthy boyfriend's parents disapproved, so Katherine used the baby to threaten them. In the end, she agreed to abort, and the boyfriend's father used his connections to get her into Janetrick University! She succeeded and achieved her goal! She often hung out with delinquents, and it's uncertain if the baby's father was even that boyfriend!"
