Chapter 153 Katherine, Why Did You Harm Me?

An illegal case? Katherine listened, her eyes filled with confusion, looking utterly puzzled.

Alex came over and asked in a deep voice, "What case?"

The police then noticed Alex in the room, looking a bit surprised. "Uh? Mr. Melville, you know this Katherine too?"

Alex's expression was serious. "What happened to her?"

Standing next to Alex, Scarlett saw the police and seemed to recall her terrifying experience from the previous night. Instinctively, she leaned closer to Alex for protection, her face showing worry. "Sir, what case is Katherine involved in? You must be mistaken! Katherine is a good person!"

Seeing Scarlett, the police were even more surprised. "Scarlett, you're here too! So, both of you know Katherine?"

Considering that the victim and their 'family' had the right to know, the police explained their purpose truthfully, "Mr. Melville, here's the thing: Yesterday, we caught the suspect who attempted to assault Scarlett. Under our intense interrogation, the suspect finally confessed everything, saying that this girl named Katherine gave him ten thousand dollars to ensure he violated the second daughter of the Mitchell family!"

"W-What!" Scarlett's thermos lunchbox, filled with hot soup, fell to the ground, spilling the soup and nearly scalding her feet.

Alex reacted quickly, pulling Scarlett away just in time to avoid the danger.

Scarlett, still in shock, shook her head in disbelief. "No, it can't be... Katherine is my friend. She wouldn't harm me."

The police, accustomed to seeing the dark side of human nature, sighed, feeling sorry for the innocent and kind girl in front of them. "Scarlett, you need to be more careful when making friends in the future."

"How could this be..." Scarlett seemed deeply hurt, her frail body almost unable to stand. She clung to Alex's arm anxiously. "Alex, how could this happen? Katherine is a good person. She wouldn't harm me, right?"

Alex looked at Scarlett, then turned his head to look at Katherine.

Sitting on the hospital bed, Katherine's face was calm, her eyes looking at him with a hint of sarcasm.

Again!

She knew they were relentless.

Alex's deep, unfathomable eyes lingered on Katherine for a moment before he turned to the police and said, "You better have evidence proving she's really a suspect. Otherwise, you can't take her from the hospital."

The police were stunned for a moment, suddenly unsure whose side Mr. Melville was on.

Wasn't Alex Scarlett's boyfriend?

Why did it seem like Alex was defending Katherine, who was suspected of hiring someone to harm his girlfriend?

"We have evidence, both witness and material! Mr. Melville, we are legally summoning the suspect. Please do not interfere with our work." The police's attitude was clearly very confident about the final outcome. They were just following the formal procedure now and would convict the suspect afterward.

"Both witness and material evidence..." Scarlett took a deep breath, looking deeply hurt at Katherine on the hospital bed. Her innocent, doe-like eyes were now red with grievance. "Katherine, I genuinely wanted to be friends with you. I even brought soup my mom made to share with you. Why would you harm me? Did I do something wrong to offend you?"

Katherine remained calm, her lips curling indifferently. "You didn't offend me. You've only been back for two days; how could you have offended me?"

Katherine's words had a deeper meaning.

Scarlett had only returned for two days, and since yesterday morning, Katherine had been hospitalized due to a severe allergy, with Teresa and Alex by her side the entire time.

Even if Katherine had truly intended to harm Scarlett, she wouldn't have had the time to contact any assailant.

Moreover, before yesterday, no one knew exactly when Scarlett would return.

Unless she could predict the future, how could she have planned everything in advance?

Also, Katherine and Scarlett didn't know each other before yesterday and had no prior interactions, so there was no question of offense.

What the police said made Katherine seem like a major suspect at first glance.

But the timeline was a significant flaw; the accusation that she hired someone to harm Scarlett simply didn't hold up!

This was clearly another setup. And the person who designed this trap was now very obvious.

Scarlett bringing soup early in the morning was a pretense; her real intention was to play the role of the innocent victim!

"Katherine, why... why are you smiling? How can you still smile?" Scarlett stepped back in horror, then, as if seeing a ghost, she hid behind Alex, clinging to his shirt for protection. "Alex, Katherine is still smiling. It's so scary."

Alex patted Scarlett's shoulder, trying to calm her down.

Then, he gently pushed Scarlett aside and walked to the bedside, reaching out to check Katherine's forehead. His eyes tightened as he turned to the police and said in a deep voice, "Given her current physical condition, she can't leave the hospital. Whatever you need to investigate or ask her, do it here."

The police looked troubled. "This..."

The doctor who had brought the police over stepped forward, fulfilling his duty, and said, "Sir, she is indeed still in a severe allergic state. She will need to receive anti-allergy medication shortly. If you take her out of the hospital now and we can't control her allergic reaction in time, her life could be at risk."

The police frowned. Considering the situation, they stepped out to make a call to their superiors. After discussing with their leadership, they returned to the room and said, "Given the special condition of the suspect, Katherine, our superiors have approved medical treatment outside of custody. We can conduct the investigation here, but Ms. Galatea, please cooperate with us."

With that, the police took out handcuffs and walked towards her with a stern expression.

Alex raised his hand to stop them. "Without a conviction, who dares to cuff her?"

The police looked pressured. "Mr. Melville, please don't make this difficult for us. This is a hospital; we can't control the situation as we would at the station. If she escapes, we can't explain it to our superiors."

Alex, with a stern face, said coldly, "Don't worry, she won't run."

Police said,  "Mr. Melville, but..."

"It's okay. I'm willing to cooperate with you. Please proceed," Katherine spoke up, extending her bandaged, still swollen hands from the hospital bed, with a calm demeanor, waiting obediently for the police to cuff her.
