Chapter 861 Missing the Past

Katherine walked over to take a look and saw that Edith's snack bag indeed only had some crumbs left.

As for George, he was rolling around on the floor like a maniac, playing with his toys. His dirty little hands reached into the snack bag, grabbed a handful, stuffed it into his mouth, and continued playing!

George's eating habits were really not great. Katherine certainly wouldn't want Charles eating anything George had touched.

So, she didn't bother asking George for snacks. Instead, she gently patted Charles on the head and said, "Charles, be good. Mommy will buy you some more later!"

Charles nodded obediently.

Katherine heard her phone ring and, not paying attention to the kids anymore, walked over to check it.

It was an encrypted message that required technical decryption to read.

Katherine was an expert at decryption. She sat on the bed and started inputting a lot of code on her phone.

A few minutes later, she finally decrypted the message. It was from Trevor.

Katherine couldn't help but smile a little and replied with an equally encrypted message: [I'm here, with the kids.]

Soon, Trevor replied: [Thank you for earlier today. I'll make it up to you when I get back.]

Reading this message, Katherine couldn't help but think that he didn't mean it in a purely literal sense.

After thinking for a moment, she replied: [No need! Just take good care of Julian, and that will be the best reward for me!]

Trevor replied quickly, [It's different. I must properly thank you, my dear wife.]

Seeing "my dear wife," Katherine's heart skipped a beat.

It had been a long, long time since Trevor had flirted with her. Seeing such words suddenly made her feel a bit dazed!

Blushing, Katherine tossed her phone aside and ignored him.

They couldn't talk too much; he was still with Sophia, and talking too much might arouse suspicion.

It was a critical moment; they couldn't afford to fail now!

Putting down her phone and looking up, she realized that one of the kids was missing!

Only Edith and George were playing; Charles was nowhere to be seen!

Katherine stood up and asked, "Edith, where's Charles?"

Edith replied, "When you were just smiling at your phone, Charles said he was going to the study to read and went out by himself!"

Katherine found a jacket in the closet, put it on, and went out the door. Before leaving, she told George and Edith to be good and not to fight.

George was happily playing with his toys and had no interest in fighting with Edith, so he agreed readily.

Katherine called in two maids to watch George and Edith, then drove out!

Charles had just heard Katherine instructing the maids to go upstairs and watch George and Edith before she left. Thinking about how no one had come looking for him when he went out to get the kite earlier, he felt a bit down.

He lay on the study desk, reading a comic book, but his mind kept replaying what the balloon seller had told him.

He was an adopted child, destined to have no inheritance rights in this family and not an important role, just a companion.

He shouldn't be competing with George and Edith for attention.

But he still missed the time when there was no George or Edith!

Back then, when Alex was still at home and Katherine only had him as a child, they were truly happy!

That was the first time he felt the warmth of a home, but not long after, Katherine left him because she was pregnant and had to go give birth to George and Edith.

Although he didn't know why Katherine had to leave at that time, he clearly felt that he wasn't as important to her as the children in her belly.

Yes! How could he compare with George and Edith?

An adopted child couldn't compare to a biological child! It was his own overestimation, thinking too much, and believing he had the same status as George and Edith.

Today, Charles realized that when there weren't enough snacks, he was the one left out.

Actually, Charles didn't really need to eat that bag of snacks; he just felt very disappointed!

Charles felt very sad, conflicted, and insecure. He wanted to be valued but felt he shouldn't expect too much.

Charles sat at Alex's desk, flipping through the comic books Alex had bought for him, but his mind was a mess, and he couldn't focus on the book!

Later, he put down the comic book and dejectedly returned to his own room.

That room was a children's room Alex had prepared for him a long time ago. After Katherine came back, he started sleeping with George and Edith in Katherine's room and rarely slept there alone.

Now that he understood his status, he felt it was better to sleep there alone in the future, so George and Edith wouldn't think he was taking up space and competing for Katherine's affection.

Even though Charles knew he wasn't valued, he still cherished this home because he had nowhere else to go.

He didn't even know who his biological parents were or what their names were!

Charles lay on the children's bed alone, crying himself to sleep.

Twenty minutes later, Katherine drove back and asked the maids to move things from her car. She took two bags of snacks upstairs to find Charles.

She had gone shopping. Charles seemed unhappy earlier because he didn't get any snacks, so she bought two bags for him and some ingredients for dinner.

She quickly went upstairs to the study but found that Charles wasn't there. Katherine turned around and asked the maids if they had seen Charles.

The maids had been busy cleaning and hadn't seen Charles return to his children's room, so they shook their heads and said they didn't know.

Katherine was about to take the snacks to her room to look for him but thought better of it. If George and Edith saw them, they would fight over them!

Charles never guarded his food and would probably end up giving most of it to George and Edith. So, she handed the two bags of snacks to a maid and walked in herself.

As soon as she walked in, she saw Edith and George fighting over a toy!

"Give it to me!"

"It's mine!"

"What's wrong with me playing with it for a bit?"

"I'm not letting you play with it!"

Seeing George and Edith not giving in to each other, Katherine rubbed her temples helplessly and cleared her throat, "Did you two forget what I said before I left?"

Hearing that Katherine was back, George and Edith froze and looked up at her.

Then, as if in a race, they suddenly let go of each other and ran towards Katherine to tattle!

"Mommy, she hit me first!"

"Mommy! He hit me first!"
