Chapter 492 Absolutely Impossible
At the hospital's orthopedics department, Katherine helped Bernard, who had one leg, into a chair. The doctor ordered an X-ray.
Bernard didn't want to sit; he wanted to walk to the X-ray room himself.
Seeing his injured foot about to touch the ground, Katherine stopped him. "Don't move! The doctor said no walking until we get the results!"
Bernard thought the doctor was overreacting. "It's fine to walk a few steps."
Katherine got anxious. "Don't move!"
Bernard, not wanting to upset Katherine, sat down immediately.
Katherine, irritated, said, "Stay here. I'll get a wheelchair!"
Bernard smiled and nodded. If he had known getting hurt would get him this kind of attention, he would have done it sooner!
Katherine fetched a wheelchair, helped Bernard into it, and carefully pushed him to the X-ray room.
Though Bernard didn't think his injury was serious, he enjoyed the attention from his sister, something he never expected.
After the X-ray, Katherine took the results and pushed Bernard back to the orthopedic clinic to show the doctor.
She had already seen from the X-ray that Bernard's foot was indeed injured.
The orthopedic doctor diagnosed a minor bone fracture, put a cast on Bernard's foot, prescribed painkillers and anti-inflammatory meds, and advised no walking for a month to heal properly.
Katherine pushed Bernard out of the clinic, feeling troubled.
She hadn't wanted to have anything to do with Bernard, but now that he was injured because of her and couldn't walk for a month, she felt bad.
The wheelchair belonged to the hospital and couldn't be taken away.
Katherine said, "I'm sorry you got hurt because of me. I'll cover the medical expenses and any lost wages, emotional distress, and nutritional costs. Now, call your family to pick you up. I can't take you home myself."
Bernard felt a bit disappointed. "Katherine, I'm fine. You don't need to feel burdened."
Katherine sighed. "Just call your family."
Bernard patted himself down and realized his phone was missing. "…It must have fallen when I got hit on the sidewalk."
Katherine frowned deeply and kept silent.
What now? She didn't have the Mitchell family's phone numbers, and even if she did, she didn't want to call them and get blamed for Bernard's injury. Just thinking about it was annoying.
But she couldn't carry Bernard, a man over six feet tall, by herself, nor could she leave him here.
After thinking it over, she decided to call Alex.
The phone rang for a while before Alex answered, his voice low and lazy. "What's up?"
Katherine asked, "Alex, are you busy right now?"
He immediately sensed something was wrong. "What's wrong? Where are you?"
Katherine answered honestly, "I'm at the hospital."
In The Melville Group's conference room, Alex stood up, looking tense and worried. "What happened? Why are you at the hospital? Are you hurt?"
He regretted letting her go to the Mitchell family alone.
‘Could they have bullied her again? Was she hurt?'
A million scenarios ran through Alex's mind, making it hard to breathe.
Katherine pouted. "It's not me. I'm fine."
Alex, still worried, frowned. "If you're fine, why are you at the hospital? Which hospital?"
Katherine, feeling a headache coming on, said, "It's Bernard. He got a bone fracture in his foot while helping me avoid a car. Now he can't walk, and his phone is lost, so he can't contact his family. I can't carry him myself."
Alex sighed in relief. "Even if you could carry him, you shouldn't! Wait there, I'll be right over!"
"Okay!" Katherine nodded and hung up.
Alex put away his phone, looked at his stunned subordinates, and said coldly, "Meeting adjourned!"
Then he quickly walked out.
Only after the president left did the people in the conference room dare to talk.
"Who was Mr. Melville talking to? He seemed so nervous!"
"It must have been a woman!"
"I haven't heard of any woman around Mr. Melville! All those women who tried to get close to him faced his cold rejection. There's even a rumor he doesn't like women..."
"I heard a rumor that Mr. Melville is married!"
"Married? Impossible! If someone like Mr. Melville got married, it would be to a socialite, and it would make headlines!"
"Maybe he wants to keep it low-key? I heard his wife is much younger, not from a prominent family, just an ordinary girl."
"Impossible! The Melville family would never allow an ordinary girl to marry in; it's all about business alliances!"
"Right! I agree! I heard Mr. Melville has a close relationship with Ms. Mitchell, and there might be something going on."
"Ms. Mitchell? That's even more impossible!"
"Why not her?"
"The Mitchell family is prestigious, but they've been at odds with the Melville family for years. No way they'd ally!"
"That's a shame! I thought they'd make a great pair!"
"What are you talking about? Haven't you seen the recent rumors online about Mrs. Melville replacing a civilian girl's SAT scores? How can you still be debating if Mr. Melville is married? His wife is already trending! Our company's stock has plummeted because of this!"
"Really? I haven't seen it. I'm too old to keep up with trending topics!"
"Is the news true? Did Mrs. Melville really replace a civilian girl's SAT scores?"
"Who knows! But the Melville family certainly has the power to do that, so maybe it's true."
"That's a bit much! It's already hard enough for ordinary girls, and now Mrs. Melville has taken away their chance to change their fate."
