Chapter 162 Who Sent You?
In the dim, enclosed interrogation room.
Two stern-faced officers sat across from each other. One of them asked sharply, "Katherine, do you plead guilty?"
Katherine sat honestly behind the small table, but her words were firm. "I'm not guilty, why should I plead?"
Officer frowned in displeasure at her stubbornness and said, "Don't you understand the principle of leniency for confession and severity for resistance? I've been a cop for many years, and I've seen plenty of suspects as stubborn as you. All of them regretted their resistence when they were sentenced! You're a young girl, why can't you learn to be good? You've done something illegal, harmed others, and don't even feel remorse. If your parents knew what you've become, they'd be heartbroken!"
Katherine replied, "Have you ever heard the saying, 'If you want to condemn someone, you can always find a pretext'? I've lived for many years, and I've rarely seen such muddle-headed officers like you! You don't look like someone who just graduated from the police academy. How could you handle cases so carelessly? If your superiors knew how you handled cases, they'd definitely dock your pay!"
The officer's face turned red, and he was at a loss for words. "You! You, you, you..."
Another officer coughed heavily and said, "Katherine, this is an interrogation room, one of the most serious places in the world. It's not a place for you to debate!"
Katherine nodded. "Fine, then I have the right to remain silent. You can ask my lawyer any questions you have when he arrives."
The other officer was also irritated by her unyielding attitude. "Katherine, you!"
Suddenly, someone knocked on the interrogation room door. An officer poked his head in and called one of the interrogating officers outside.
After a while, the officer returned and communicated with his colleague about new developments in the case.
After hearing it, the other officer was a bit confused. "How come there's another new witness?"
One cop said, "Yeah! For such a simple case, there sure are a lot of witnesses!"
The first guy stated, "Mr. Mitchell and Ms. Mitchell are waiting at the station for Katherine's interrogation results! I thought we could wrap this up quickly, but now there's a new development!"
That cop said, "Anyway, let's take Katherine over there first! Katherine, your lawyer is here. Let's go, we're taking you to see him now."
Katherine's handcuffs were fixed to the small table in the interrogation room. An officer came over to unlock them.
She obediently stood up and followed the two officers out of the interrogation room to a much larger room designated for visitors to see detained suspects.
Besides David, Bernard, Sunny, and Scarlett, Sophie was also in the room. They were all waiting to see the final results of her interrogation.
Katherine's calm gaze swept over them, then she instinctively looked around. However, in this square room, there was no one else.
She furrowed her brow. Who was she expecting?
Alex wouldn't care about her anymore. Of course, she didn't need him to.
Katherine just found it ironic!
Bernard sat on a simple chair in the visitation room, relaxed and composed, still exuding an air of nobility. He looked up at Katherine, who had just walked in with handcuffs, and a trace of coldness flashed in his eyes.
Then, he looked at Katherine's lawyer, David, and smiled. "Mr. Hall, you have a high reputation in Janetrick. Now you're helping a criminal who hired someone to harm others. Don't you think this will affect the good reputation you've built over the years?"
David replied politely but seriously, "Mr. Mitchell, I'm a lawyer. My duty is to get the fairest result for my client and clear her name. No one should bear the consequences for something they didn't do."
Bernard chuckled, "Since Mr. Hall says so, I'll be watching to see how you prove her innocence with all the evidence against her!"
Katherine was seated as arranged by the officers. Soon, the thug who had attacked Scarlett was brought in by other officers.
Seeing Ethan, Scarlett immediately burrowed into her brother's arms in fear. Bernard gently comforted Scarlett, then looked up at Ethan, the man who had bullied his sister. His usually gentle eyes now held a hint of menace.
David began questioning, "Mr. Davis, we met yesterday so that I won't introduce myself again. Now, please recount the details of your crime."
Ethan, who had already confessed, nodded honestly and began, "Three nights ago, Katherine arranged to meet me by Whispering Ripple and transferred $10,000 to me as a deposit. She said she wanted me to ruin a pretty girl named Scarlett, and promised another $10,000 upon completion."
"I thought it was easy money and a chance to be with a beautiful woman, so I foolishly agreed. Later, Katherine contacted me and told me which hospital and room Scarlett was in, so I went there... and then I got caught by the police."
After Ethan finished, David immediately asked, "So, you're saying you committed the crime under my client Katherine's orders, correct?"
Ethan affirmed. "Yes!"
David asked, "How did you and my client meet?"
"It was... it was by chance. She... she found my contact information online and reached out to me," answered he.
David continued, "As far as I know, you were laid off by a company two months ago and didn't dare tell your family, so you've been doing gig to make ends meet. Three days ago, you were handing out flyers for a newly opened BBQ restaurant. At Whispering Ripple, you happened to sit on the same bench as my client Katherine for a rest. That was your first meeting! At that time, you only recommended the BBQ restaurant to her and signed her up as a member to earn a commission, nothing more!"
Ethan lowered his head, his eyes flickering. "That... that was because she told me to pretend to be a flyer distributor when meeting her, to avoid police suspicion later."
David questioned, "Really? You were pretending to hand out flyers? If you were pretending, why did you start doing it two months in advance? Mr. Davis, you've been handing out flyers for two months. Are you saying my client contacted you two months ago to plan an attack on Scarlett? Does this crime really require two months of preparation? Isn't that a bit too cautious?"
Ethan thought for a moment and then insisted. "Katherine repeatedly told me to be careful! She said Ms. Mitchell and her husband had a past, so she had been jealous of Ms. Mitchell for a long time. She told me to prepare in advance and wait for Scarlett to return to the country before making a move. I figured I could earn some extra money for my family by handing out flyers in the meantime, so I kept doing it."
David's voice suddenly boomed, "You're lying! Two months ago, my client didn't even know Mr. Melville, let alone be jealous of Scarlett because of him! Why would she plan so far in advance to harm a girl she had never met and had no conflict with? It makes no sense!"
Ethan panicked, looking guilty. "Because... because...! I can't remember clearly, but Katherine transferred the money to me, and she told me to do it! I have the transaction records on my phone, you can check them if you don't believe me!"
David had, of course, already reviewed the evidence. "My client's phone was lost for a period that day and was handed over to the police by someone who found it. Later, Mr. Melville's secretary retrieved it from the police station! This can be verified with police records. It's entirely possible that someone with ill intentions used the phone to transfer the money!"
At this point, Bernard, growing impatient, interjected, "Mr. Hall, please don't dismiss already established evidence. I don't want to hear your hypothetical scenarios or possibilities; they are unconvincing. I just want to see the new witness the police mentioned. If there isn't one, I won't stay any longer!"
David glanced at his watch, looking a bit anxious, and then looked over at Katherine. The witness should have arrived by now. Could something have happened on the way?
He answered, "Sorry, I need to step out and make a call to check on this."
