Chapter 708 No Need to Say Anymore
Alex winced from the pain but tried to keep his voice steady. "Yeah, I'm up."
He could hear Katherine's relieved sigh on the other end.
She noticed his raspy voice but figured it was just because he had just woken up.
"Where are you now? Haven't you made it to Sophia's place yet?" Katherine asked.
Alex answered honestly, "I'm here."
Since Alex was hurt and couldn't hold the phone, Leander had placed it by his pillow and then quietly left the room to keep watch.
Katherine's tone turned serious. "How did it go? Did you see Brent? Did he give you any trouble?"
Hearing her concern, Alex felt a warmth in his heart and a slight smile on his lips, but he decided to play along. "Yeah, he did."
Katherine's worry was immediate. "What happened? What did he do?"
Alex pretended to speak with a tone of grievance, "He hit me."
What?
Katherine almost reflexively cursed, "Wait! I'll have Frank get me a plane ticket right now!"
Hearing her frantic movements, Alex chuckled softly, which turned into hearty laughter. "So you care about me that much? Can't stand to see me bullied and want to fly over to stand up for me?"
Hearing his mischievous laughter, Katherine realized she was being teased and said irritably, "Alex, are you messing with me?"
Alex did this to ease her worries. If he told her everything was fine, she might think he was hiding the truth and wouldn't be truly reassured. By joking, she would believe everything was fine and relax.
Alex chuckled softly. "I just wanted to hear you worry about me. After all, you used to ignore me, thinking I was dispensable, leaving whenever you wanted, right?"
Katherine was a bit annoyed. "Is this the time to joke?"
Alex's tone became more serious. "Alright, no more joking. The matter has been settled. Tomorrow morning, Sophia will go with me to cancel the marriage registration, and then I'll come back to you immediately."
Katherine was a bit surprised. "Was it really that easy to settle? Did Brent make any unreasonable demands?"
Alex didn't want her to worry but also didn't want to lie, so he downplayed it. "I had to make some necessary compromises, but it's all resolved now. Just wait for me to come back. Is there any gift you want? I'll have Leander buy it for you."
Katherine still felt something was off and frowned, concerned. "I don't want a gift! Alex, video call me now. I want to see you!"
Alex was taken aback, feeling guilty.
He had to admit Katherine had sharp perception; nothing could escape her notice.
But he couldn't let her see his injuries, or she might really buy a ticket and come over immediately.
Alex felt warm inside, genuinely appreciating Katherine's concern, but to avoid worrying her, he declined, "No, I haven't cleaned up today. I look a mess."
Katherine found his response amusing. "Alex, you? A mess? Just video call me, I want to see you!"
Alex smirked, "I just got undressed to take a shower. You sure you wanna video call now?"
Katherine's cheeks turned red. "I'm not interested in your body, just your face."
Alex's face was also banged up, so he didn't want her to see it and freak out.
He said, "You left me hanging for so long. Do you know how I got through it? Now I want you to feel that longing too! Wait till I get back. You'll not only see me but also touch me!"
Katherine frowned. "Cut the crap. If you don't video call me now, I'm really gonna get mad!"
Alex chuckled. "Chill out. Let me shower and rest. I'm beat today. For a video call, I gotta get dressed, even if it's just my face. Not only would you be shy, but I would be too."
Hearing he was tired, Katherine backed off. "Fine, go shower! I don't really wanna see you anyway!"
She hung up, deciding not to bug him during his shower.
Looking at the phone, Katherine still felt uneasy. But recalling Alex's tone, everything seemed normal, so she reassured herself it should be fine.
She decided to call him again before bed.
About half an hour later, Katherine called again. Alex answered, sounding a bit sleepy. This convinced Katherine he was genuinely tired. After a few words, she hung up.
She went to sleep too.
In her dream, she saw Alex getting beaten. Furious, she grabbed a stick to defend him.
Early in the morning, Nora had someone bring a wheelchair for Alex and had him taken to the marriage office in Markovia.
Sophia was hesitant to get into the car. However, given the circumstances, she feared that refusing might escalate the conflict between Brent and Alex. She was also worried Brent might lose his temper and harm Alex in an attempt to protect her.
Reluctantly, she decided to go along for now.
In the car, Alex's face was pale from the pain, and he didn't speak.
Sophia turned to look at him, feeling very distressed and sad.
"Alex, all these years, have you really only seen me as a friend, with no other feelings?" she asked, unwilling to let it go.
"Yes," Alex answered firmly, without a hint of hesitation, not wanting to elaborate further.
Sophia smiled bitterly. "But I've never seen you as just a friend. You were my love at first sight, you know?"
Alex responded, "I didn't know."
"Alex, from the first time I saw you, I had feelings for you," Sophia began, her voice trembling slightly. "But I thought you were hard to approach, so I chose to be your friend. I hoped that one day, I could win you over."
Alex said, "There's no need to say this now."
"Love should be about who comes first, and I came first! Why did you choose Katherine?" Sophia demanded.
"I met her a long time ago; she saved my life years ago," Alex replied calmly.
"She's just a village girl; she won't be of any help to your future. She doesn't fit your status!" Sophia argued, frustration evident in her tone.
