Chapter 888 Regret Believing Them

It was still dark.

The sound of the doorbell mixed with urgent knocking woke up Nora and Linda.

Rubbing her eyes, Linda sat up, "Who is it? Knocking so early in the morning!"

Nora had already gotten out of bed to find some clothes to wear. "Linda, you go back to sleep. Mom will go see who it is!"

Although Linda had just woken up and was still groggy, her sense of alertness was strong. She got out of bed and grabbed Nora, who was about to open the door.

"Mom, this isn't our house, and your friend hasn't lived here for a while! Who would come knocking at someone else's door at this hour? We need to be careful; it might be a bad person!"

Nora looked at the clock on the wall. It was only four in the morning. It was indeed unusual for someone to be knocking at this time.

Linda also put on her clothes. "Mom, wait for me. I'll go with you to see who it is! Even though Dad is gone, he must have arranged for someone to keep an eye on us nearby. Logically, Dad's people wouldn't let strangers come knocking on our door! I guess the person knocking is either one of Dad's people or a bad person who has already dealt with Dad's people!"

Hearing Linda's speculation, Nora couldn't help but get nervous.

Who could the bad person be? She hadn't offended anyone.

Could it be someone Sophia sent to deal with them?

Thinking of this, Nora held Linda's hand, ready to protect her if anything happened.

The knocking outside grew more intense and urgent.

Nora and Linda tiptoed to the door, not daring to turn on the light for fear of being discovered.

Nora slowly approached the peephole and looked outside.

She was surprised!

Linda noticed something was wrong with Nora and tugged her hand, asking softly, "Mom, did you see? Who is it outside?"

Nora snapped out of it and, without answering Linda, turned on the light.

The room instantly lit up, making Linda feel even less secure. "Mom, why did you turn on the light? Now we're exposed! Who is it outside?"

Nora patted Linda's head. "Don't worry, it's not a bad person."

Then, Nora opened the door.

Linda, still tense and curious, saw a beautiful figure rush in, carrying a faint floral scent.

The figure immediately hugged Nora upon entering.

It took Linda a full minute to react. "Ms. Ayers, what are you doing here?"

The woman hugging Nora let go and looked down at her friend's daughter and her own student, Linda. "Did I scare you, Linda?"

Linda nodded honestly. "Claire, knocking on the door at this hour and appearing out of nowhere like you did, anyone would be scared."

Claire smiled apologetically and squatted down to hug Linda. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to. I saw the picture Nora sent me today, and it looked so much like my daughter that I bought a ticket and came over immediately!"

Linda was stunned but understood!

The Katherine who had once saved Nora was probably Claire's long-lost daughter!

No wonder the bodyguards Brent had stationed at the door didn't react when Claire knocked. They all knew Claire was Nora's best friend.

Nora looked helplessly at Claire, who had flown over overnight. She sighed, brought Claire's suitcase inside, and closed the door.

"Claire, sit down first. I'll get you some water."

Claire stood up and shook her head. "Nora, no need for water! Take me to see the girl named Katherine. I want to see her as soon as possible."

Nora felt a headache coming on. "I want to take you to see her too, but look at the time. If we visit her at four in the morning, she'll think we're crazy!"

Claire finally realized the time issue and sat on the couch, looking lost. "You're right. I don't want to scare her. She's very timid."

Usually elegant and composed, Claire was now flustered and disoriented when it came to Katherine.

Linda sat next to Claire and shook her head. "That's not true! Ms. Ayers, Katherine is not timid at all. She's a very independent and brave girl!"

Claire looked down at Linda, stunned. "Is she really independent and brave now?"

Linda nodded firmly. "Yes! Ms. Ayers, didn't I tell you? The person who risked her life to save my mom was Katherine. She's not only brave but also very kind!"

Claire's eyes were red, filled with tears that wouldn't fall.

Her emotions were complicated. After seeing the picture Linda drew, she had a strong premonition that Katherine was her daughter, Laura.

But hearing Linda's description of Katherine, she felt uncertain.

In her memory, Laura was very timid, afraid to talk to strangers, and would hide behind Bernard when guests came over, taking a long time to come out and greet them.

When she was born, she was the darling of the Mitchell family, well-protected.

Especially Bernard, who always thought of Laura and kept her away from anything dangerous. Anything Laura didn't like or anyone she didn't like, he wouldn't allow in the house.

So, it was hard for her to imagine how Laura, such a timid and pure girl, had grown up.

Back then, she had entrusted Laura to an old classmate, asking him to take care of her for a while. After dealing with some troublesome matters, she went to pick Laura up.

But the old classmate told her that Laura had fallen ill and unfortunately passed away! They had already buried her!

She was heartbroken, feeling she had let Laura down.

She couldn't bear to imagine Laura's suffering during her illness and couldn't leave her again, so she took Laura's ashes with her.

All these years, she had always thought Laura was dead, never imagining that Laura might still be alive.

How could this be? Why would the Galatea family lie to her?

Why would they say Laura had died of illness and not tell her Laura's whereabouts? She hated herself for not investigating properly and believing them! If Katherine really was Laura...
