Chapter 288 Honey, This Isn't Right
As the man's approach, Katherine's eyes flickered. "I hate the smell of smoke!"
Alex frowned, leaned in closer, and blew a puff of smoke over her head, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "You hate smoke? Then stay away from me!"
He stubbed out his cigarette on the wall behind her and tossed it into a trash can with perfect aim.
Katherine, leaned back against the roadside wall as Alex approached, leaving her with nowhere to go.
She frowned and glared at him. "How can I stay away from you like this? Mr. Melville, move aside, and I will!"
Alex's eyes narrowed. "Ms. Galatea, are you nervous?"
Katherine stayed silent.
He was so close, anyone would be nervous!
Alex didn't back off, staring into her eyes as if trying to see through her.
Their eyes met, and the atmosphere grew tense.
Alex always felt like this woman wasn't really married, like she was hiding something.
"Honey, if you get this close to another man at our doorstep, I might get jealous!"
A man's voice, gentle yet reproachful, came from the other side.
Alex and Katherine turned to look.
It was Frank.
Frank raised an eyebrow and smiled. "Mr. Melville, could you please step away from my wife? I'm a jealous guy and don't like other men getting too close to her!"
Alex's brow furrowed. He had been doubting Katherine's marriage, and now Frank appeared, looking jealous.
The doubt in his heart faded.
He withdrew his arm from the wall, straightened up, and let her go.
Katherine quickly distanced herself from Alex and walked towards Frank.
Frank, displaying excellent acting skills, held her shoulders and spoke softly, "Honey, why did you trouble Mr. Melville to bring you home again? Next time, call me, and I'll pick you up, okay?"
Katherine couldn't help but twitch her mouth but had to cooperate. "Got it! You were in a meeting, and I didn't want to interrupt. I ran into Mr. Melville nearby, and he helped me chase away some bad guys, so we came back together!"
"Is that so!" Frank smiled at Katherine, then looked at Alex with a smile that didn't reach his eyes. "Mr. Melville, you really enjoy playing the hero and bringing other people's wives home!"
Frank's words had a strong sense of ownership.
Alex glanced at Katherine standing beside Frank, then looked at him coldly. "If you care about her, you should assign more people to protect her. Don't let her go out and work hard. Fulfill your duty as a husband!"
Frank replied, "Katherine works out of personal interest. I respect her and will take care of my wife. There's no need for you to get involved, Mr. Melville."
The tension in the air thickened.
Alex shot Frank a cold, disdainful look, a hint of menace in his eyes. "If you don't leave any gaps, no one can step in."
With that, Alex turned, got into the car that had been trailing him, and drove off.
As Alex's car disappeared down the road, Frank turned to Katherine, his expression serious. "Katherine, what's going on? Why did Alex bring you back again? And did you really say there were people trying to harm you?"
Though Alex was gone, Katherine felt exhausted and waved her hand dismissively. "It's a long story! I'm tired. Let's go home and rest first."
In the moving car, Leander, sitting in the passenger seat, glanced back at the brooding Mr. Melville, feeling the weight of the tension.
When Mr. Melville had gone to save Ms. Galatea, he left his phone in the car, and Miss Teresa had called. Thinking it might be urgent, Leander had answered.
Now, he needed to report Teresa's message to Mr. Melville.
After a moment of hesitation, Leander spoke up, "Mr. Melville, Teresa called and said today is her mother's birthday. She invited you to dinner tonight to celebrate."
Teresa's mother was Alex's eldest cousin on his mother's side, nearly twenty years older than him. She had taken care of Alex like a parent after his mother passed away when he was young.
After a long silence, Leander asked again, "Mr. Melville, are you going to Teresa's house or back to the old house?"
Alex seemed to snap out of his thoughts, his expression blank. "Go to the Harris family."
Since Katherine left, the old house had lost its warmth, and he rarely went back.
"Yes, sir!"
Leander relayed the order to the driver, who changed direction.
At the Harris family home, Teresa came out of the kitchen with a plate of large, plump crabs, her face beaming with a cheerful smile.
She placed the crabs in the center of the dining table, looking at the spread of dishes but still feeling it wasn't enough.
She turned back and called into the kitchen, "Mom! Make a few more dishes. Alex is definitely bringing Katherine today! This is Katherine's first visit. We can't neglect her!"
Leina Melville came out with a plate of salad, giving her daughter a reproachful look. "Got it! You've said this at least ten times! Don't forget, I'm the main character today. You're making me cook so many dishes. Aren't you afraid of tiring your mom out?"
Teresa grinned and hugged her mother's arm playfully. "Mom, I know you're working hard! But my cooking is terrible. The only thing I can make well is crabs. Otherwise, I'd take over the kitchen myself! I'm just afraid my terrible cooking will scare Alex and Katherine away!"
