Katherine's lips curled into a sly smile as she said to Scarlett, "Miss Mitchell, I took off the Phantom costume and left it neatly folded on the makeup station backstage. Make sure someone picks it up. That costume looks custom-made, right? You might want to check it now. If it gets lost or damaged later, don't blame me!"
Her tone was light, but the atmosphere shifted instantly.
Scarlett and Sophie froze, unsure how to react. They shot Katherine a glare and anxiously watched Macus's reaction.
Macus's kind face darkened. He glanced at the innocent-looking Scarlett in the wheelchair, then at Katherine, who had removed her stage makeup, and frowned.
Katherine just smiled at him. Seeing Scarlett stay silent, she continued, "Miss Mitchell, why aren't you saying anything? If there's no problem, I'll be on my way. Bye."
She then turned to the Ayers family elders. "Mr. Ayers, Mrs. Ayers, it was an honor to attend your party. I won't disturb you any longer. Goodbye."
With that, she turned to leave.
At that moment, Aria suddenly snapped out of her daze and reached for Katherine. "It's Claire. She's Claire. Claire, don't go."
Hearing the name Claire, Katherine paused but didn't look back.
Aria's outburst brought Macus back to his senses. He first supported Aria, then called out, "Girl, wait a moment!"
Katherine stopped and turned back with a polite smile. "Mr. Ayers, did you call me?"
Macus pondered and asked, "From what you just said, does that mean you were the one wearing the Phantom costume?"
Katherine nodded casually. "Yes, that's right."
Macus's frown deepened. "So, it was was actually you who sang 'The Phantom of the Opera' on stage just now ?"
Katherine raised an eyebrow and didn't rush to answer. Instead, she looked down at Scarlett in the wheelchair.
Scarlett's face was stiff and pale, staring at Katherine with a seemingly calm but threatening look.
It was a warning for Katherine not to speak recklessly.
Katherine received Scarlett's warning but remained indifferent. She truthfully answered Macus, "Yes, it was me who sang 'The Phantom of the Opera' on stage. Sorry if it wasn't up to par."
Macus's face darkened completely. His newfound respect for Scarlett vanished, and he disliked her even more. He was also angry at himself for believing a lie.
His stern gaze turned to Scarlett and Sophie, who had been in cahoots. He snorted and coldly questioned Scarlett, "Didn't you just say you sang 'The Phantom of the Opera'?"
Scarlett tried to appear less guilty, but her face was unnaturally stiff. "Mr. Ayers, I..."
Sophie quickly rolled her eyes and jumped in to defend Scarlett. "Mr. Ayers, don't listen to Katherine's nonsense. How could she have sung 'The Phantom of the Opera'? Does she look like someone who can sing opera? She's just an ordinary employee from a poor rural background at Bernard's company. How could she have had the opportunity to learn opera?"
Turning to glare at Katherine, Sophie continued to mock her. "Katherine, don't envy Scarlett for getting applause and praise. Don't try to claim credit and boost yourself up! Do you really think anyone will believe you sang 'The Phantom of the Opera' just because you say so? The other opera performers backstage can confirm it was Scarlett on stage!"
Seeing Sophie so 'righteous,' Macus became suspicious again. He frowned and asked, "So, who really sang 'The Phantom of the Opera' just now?"
Before Katherine and Scarlett could answer, Sophie interrupted again. "Mr. Ayers, it was definitely Scarlett! Don't believe Katherine's lies. She has a questionable character! While working at Bernard's company, she neglected her duties, constantly seeking to charm men and advance socially. She even attempted to seduce Scarlett's boyfriend, Alex, but failed. Macus gave Sophie a stern look. "People can lie, but their voices can't! Since both of them claim to have sung 'The Phantom of the Opera,' let's have each of them sing a few lines. I'll know who it was right away!"
Scarlett, who had just breathed a sigh of relief, faced another crisis. Her face was stiff, but she tried to maintain composure. She secretly pinched Sophie's hand hard.
