Chapter 165 Double Standards

Katherine laughed and said, "What? If it were me, you'd pursue it to the end, no leniency! But if it's Sophie, you want me to let it go? Scarlett, this is a classic case of double standards!"

Scarlett felt a bit embarrassed. "I... Katherine, I never intended to pursue you from the start. It was Bernard who wouldn't allow anyone to hurt me, so..."

Katherine, still wearing handcuffs, leaned lazily against the back of her chair. "Sorry, Scarlett, I don't want to hear you anymore. Let's leave the rest to the police to find out the truth."

Scarlett lowered her head but didn't give up pleading for Sophie, "I'm sorry, Katherine. I know we've wronged you in this matter, but Sophie is my best friend. I still hope you can be a bit more magnanimous."

Katherine ignored Scarlett and instead looked at Bernard, who was standing not far away with a calm expression. "Mr. Mitchell, you spoil Scarlett dearly. You wouldn't let the real mastermind get away easily, would you?"

Scarlett frowned and quickly turned to Bernard. "Bernard, you know Sophie didn't mean to harm me. She just used the wrong method."

Bernard had no sympathy for Sophie, but because of her close friendship with Scarlett, he had to consider it carefully, falling into deep thought.

Katherine noticed the hesitation in Bernard's expression and sneered, "Mr. Mitchell, I hope you, as a man, can act with some principles. Don't be like your precious sister with double standards, making a fool of yourself."

Bernard snapped out of his thoughts and looked at Katherine, who was mocking him, his thin lips curling slightly. "Ms. Galatea, rest assured, if the police confirm that everything Ethan and his family said is true, I will make Sophie receive the punishment she deserves."

Katherine smiled. "Good to hear that."

Upon hearing Bernard's statement, Sophie broke down on the spot and yelled, "Bernard! No, it wasn't me. Katherine framed me. You have to believe me."

The officers stepped forward to restrain the uncooperative Sophie, forcibly handcuffing her and escorting her to the interrogation room for questioning.

At the same time, they also took Ethan and his family away for separate questioning and a thorough investigation to verify the facts.

Half an hour later, two cops came in to remove Katherine's handcuffs, apologizing profusely, "Katherine, after investigation, we have confirmed that everything Ethan said today is true. This case has nothing to do with you! We are truly sorry for the wrongful treatment you received during your severe allergic reaction due to our investigative error."

Regaining her freedom, Katherine shook her wrists, which were sore from the handcuffs. "It's okay. Someone deliberately framed me, and you officers were also caught in the trap. We're all victims here."

The two officers looked at Katherine in surprise and then at each other in disbelief. They had expected a barrage of complaints and accusations, but instead, they received understanding and forgiveness.

Mistakes in investigations happened from time to time, and most people wouldn't be so kind. But this young girl, despite her age, showed a maturity beyond her years, which deeply moved them.

One officer, feeling ashamed, said, "Ms. Galatea, we apologize for the grievances you've suffered these past few days. We'll arrange a car to take you home now."

Katherine waved her hand and replied, "No need, I appreciate the offer, but I don't want to ride in a police car again!"

Although Katherine declined, it brought a relaxed smile to the two officers' faces. "Alright then, we won't take you. Be safe on your way home!"

They developed a genuine fondness for Katherine, as it was rare to encounter someone so rational and understanding of their work.

Katherine said, "Alright, Sir, you don't need to worry about me. Go ahead and get back to work!"

"Okay!" answered they.

After the officers left, Bernard approached Katherine with a somewhat indifferent smile. With the truth revealed, it was time for Bernard to make peace with Katherine.

However, Katherine didn't even glance at him, walking straight past without a second look. Bernard's face froze in embarrassment, his eyes narrowing. It was the first time he had been so blatantly ignored and disregarded.

Katherine left.

Scarlett, looking uneasy, came over and asked, "Bernard, what are we going to do about Sophie now?"

Bernard snapped out of it and said sternly to his sister, "Sophie is an adult with the ability to think independently. She should bear the consequences of her actions."

She added, "But Sophie is my best friend! Bernard, we can't just abandon her."

Bernard replied, "Enough, don't say anything more. Go home with Sunny now."

In the police station restroom, after washing her hands, Katherine came out to find her lawyer, David, waiting in the hallway. He respectfully and naturally handed her a tissue.

He also handed her his phone, saying, "Ms. Galatea, Mr. Perez is on the line. He asked you to take the call."

Katherine took the tissue first to dry her hands, then picked up the phone.

Frank's voice came through. "Katherine, how are you? Are you okay?"

"I'm good! You did a great job. You found the witnesses in time. There will be a reward when I get back!" answered she.

Frank, feeling a bit guilty, said, "Katherine, actually, I didn't find the witnesses."

Katherine's expression froze. "You didn't? Did they come forward on their own?"

"No, I was late. When I got to the destination, they had already been rescued," he replied.

She asked, "Who rescued them?"

Frank answered, "If I'm not mistaken, it was Mr. Melville's surbordinate, Leander. He has also been investigating Ethan's family situation these past few days. He found everything out before we did."

Katherine was stunned and remained silent for a long time.

Frank added, "Katherine, if I may say one more thing, Mr. Melville seems to have..."

Before he could finish, Katherine hung up the phone, feeling annoyed.

Seeing Katherine's displeased expression, David cautiously asked, "Ms. Galatea, would you like to take a ride?"

Katherine tossed the phone back to him and waved her hand. "No, thanks.. David, there's nothing more for you to do here. You can head back to your firm."

"Alright, Ms. Galatea," he answered..

They left the police station one after the other.

David said goodbye to Katherine before getting into his car and driving away.

Katherine watched David's car leave, her eyes downcast. When she looked up, she was suddenly taken aback to see Alex waiting at the police station entrance.

At that moment, upon seeing him again, a wave of complex emotions washed over her, causing her to stand frozen in place.

Alex, dressed in a suit, was lazily leaning against the hood of a luxurious white sports car, casually smoking a cigarette. It was clear he was waiting for someone.

Seeing Katherine standing there in a daze, he raised his hand and beckoned her over. "Come here."

Katherine hesitated for a moment before walking over and called out, "Alex."

He exhaled a puff of smoke, squinting at her, then glanced in the direction where David's car had just driven off. "Ms. Galatea, you seem to have quite the connections."
