Chapter 560 Innocence
Bernard shot him a frosty look, "Screw you, man! Wanna hang around here for a few days? Fine. If not, just bounce! No one will even know you're here if you keep quiet!"
Jonathan just shrugged and grinned, "Oh, look at you! All tough with me, but when it comes to Katherine, you're practically groveling!"
Bernard's eyes went icy, and he grabbed the cane next to him, ready to swing.
Seeing this, Jonathan quickly got up and shrugged, "I'm stuffed. I'm outta here. Enjoy your meal, folks!"
With that, he slipped out fast.
Bernard tossed the cane aside and sighed.
Katherine could see that Bernard and Jonathan's bond was real, no fake stuff.
With nothing to do about Katherine, Bernard turned his annoyed gaze to the quiet Alex and asked, "When did you get back?"
Alex, who had just finished feeding Charles, wiped the kid's mouth with a napkin and calmly replied, "Landed early this morning."
Bernard's face stayed stern, "You sure are laid-back, leaving a pregnant Katherine home alone while you jet off for work!"
Alex's expression didn't change, though his brow furrowed a bit, knowing he might've messed up but had no choice. "The situation abroad was tricky. Dragging her back and forth didn't seem right."
Bernard's face stayed stern. "I hope you're genuinely busy with work. Don't let me find out you've done anything shady to Katherine!"
Alex replied coolly, "You're overthinking it, Mr. Mitchell. Worry about yourself first. Katherine still hasn't acknowledged you as her brother."
Katherine's refusal to acknowledge him meant he didn't even have the right to lecture his brother-in-law on her behalf.
Bernard looked helplessly at Katherine, hoping she'd back him up.
Katherine didn't even glance at him, just focused on drinking her milk and occasionally whispering to Charles in Alex's arms.
Charles, now full and feeling super secure, let his guard down and felt sleepy.
Last night, he was too worried Katherine would leave and didn't dare sneak out to find her, so he hadn't slept much. Now, he was super tired but trying hard to stay awake.
Katherine noticed Charles's condition. She had almost finished eating and reached out, "Alex, Charles is sleepy. Hand him over, and I'll take him to nap. You should eat something!"
Alex didn't hand Charles over and gently said, "I'm not hungry. I'll take him to the room to rest. You should eat more. Just milk isn't enough."
Before Katherine could say anything else, Alex had already stood up and left with Charles.
Before coming, Alex had told Leander to keep an eye on Katherine and not let her eat anything from the Mitchell family. Now that he was here, he had Leander watch over the Mitchell family kitchen.
Today's breakfast ingredients were personally bought by Leander and prepared under his watch, making them super safe.
So, Alex wasn't sweating it and just wanted her to chow down more.
Seeing Alex leave with Charles, Katherine smirked.
She wasn't quite stuffed yet, so she decided to munch a bit more.
The chef at the Mitchell family's Summer Villa had mad skills, and the breakfast was right up her alley.
But what really bugged her was Bernard sitting across from her, watching her eat. It was super annoying.
Bernard watched Alex leave with Charles and narrowed his eyes a bit. He quickly figured out that Alex was giving him a chance to chat alone with Katherine.
Even though Alex usually seemed more distant than Bernard, he could be thoughtful sometimes.
He was probably also considering Bernard's position and planning for future situations.
"Katherine, want anything else to eat? I can have someone whip it up for you," Bernard said, trying to be nice.
Katherine, though, wasn't feeling it. She frowned and shot him a warning look, "Mr. Mitchell, thanks for the offer, but please don't call yourself my brother in front of me. Appreciate your cooperation."
Bernard sighed, frustrated, "Alright, I'll try."
As Katherine nibbled on her bread, she suddenly remembered something. She raised an eyebrow, "By the way, Mr. Mitchell, did Jonathan have any beef with Alex, Hilton, and Issac in the past?"
Bernard was a bit thrown by Katherine's question, "Why do you ask?"
Katherine replied, "Oh, just before you came in, I overheard them having a pretty heated convo. Sounded like something about cheating. Mr. Mitchell, know anything about it? Care to share?"
Even though Bernard and Alex weren't exactly buddies, Jonathan was Bernard's friend, and he didn't feel right spilling his friend's tea. "Katherine, you're a girl! You shouldn't be nosing into men's business!"
Katherine's curious look turned into one of total disinterest, and she made a dismissive sound, losing any desire to chat with Bernard.
Seeing this, Bernard felt helpless and lost. Just when Katherine had finally started talking to him, he managed to tick her off again.
After hesitating for a moment, he decided to give Katherine a quick rundown of the past events. Just as he opened his mouth, Alice's loud voice came from outside. "Mr. Melville, please, for the sake of your long-standing relationship with Scarlett, can you find a way to get her out? I promise Scarlett won't mess with your relationship with Ms. Galatea anymore. Really, I'm begging you."
Then came Alex's cold, unfeeling voice, "The relationship between Scarlett and me was a setup by you. There was never any real connection. Mrs. Mitchell, out of respect for you, I’m keeping it civil. Don’t push me to say something nasty."
"Mr. Melville, but Scarlett is truly innocent. She loves you so much."
"I'm not holding you and your daughter accountable for deceiving me. How dare you still try to get something from me?" Alex said.
