Chapter 378 Not Explaining Properly!
Scarlett was shocked. Bernard had never talked to her like that before!
"But I really love Alex, Bernard, you know that..."
Bernard frowned. "Love's a two-way street. If he doesn't love you, nothing you do will change that. Let him go, and set yourself free too."
Scarlett's eyes welled up with tears. "Bernard, what's gotten into you? Did Katherine say something? You seem different. Don't you care about me anymore?"
Seeing her cry, Bernard felt a pang of guilt despite his frustration. Maybe he was too harsh.
"Stop crying. I'm doing this for you. You've almost lost yourself over Alex, you know that?"
He patted her shoulder to comfort her.
Scarlett's tears soaked his clothes. "But I really love Alex! I can't help it."
Bernard rubbed his forehead, feeling genuinely troubled.
What kind of joke was this? Both his sisters in love with the same guy!
As their brother, he was really in a tough spot.
After dropping Scarlett off at home, Bernard headed back to the office.
With Scarlett out of the car, Billy finally asked, "Mr. Mitchell, how did it go with Ms. Mitchell? Did she acknowledge you?"
In the back seat, Bernard leaned back and rubbed his temples. "Do you think she would?"
Billy was silent for a moment, then tried to comfort him. "Ms. Mitchell grew up in the countryside and had a tough life. It's no wonder she'd have a hard time with long-lost relatives popping up out of the blue."
Bernard closed his eyes wearily and laughed at himself. "No, she knew all along."
Billy frowned. "She knew you were her brother all along?"
Bernard sighed deeply. "Yes. She knew from the start, despite my attitude. But she didn't say anything and treated me like a stranger. Do you think she'd want to acknowledge me as her brother?"
Billy understood this was tough.
"But if she knew, why didn't she say anything? Doesn't she want to reunite with her family?"
"Maybe she just hates me as her brother." Bernard's sarcastic smile was directed at himself.
Billy also felt Bernard had been too harsh on Katherine to protect Scarlett. He sighed. "Sir, give it some time. She'll come around eventually."
Bernard said nothing more.
He knew deep down it wasn't optimistic.
Laura didn't just hold a grudge; she genuinely didn't want to acknowledge him as her brother!
She didn't care about having a wealthy and powerful brother or the Mitchell family's background. She truly didn't care.
Otherwise, she would have come to the family long ago, knowing her identity.
He had even suspected Katherine of being a gold digger trying to climb the social ladder.
He felt like kicking himself!
He was the real villain, judging a good person with a narrow mind!
After Bernard left, Katherine took out her phone, which had been vibrating in her pocket.
It was a video call from Alex.
She had been talking to Bernard earlier, so she had kept it on silent and didn't answer.
Now that Bernard was gone, she could talk to her boyfriend!
She swiped to answer, and Alex's flawless face appeared on the screen.
His usually handsome and stern features were now filled with displeasure. "What were you doing? Why are you only answering now?"
Katherine lazily sat on the couch. "Eating!"
His expression darkened. "Eating? Whose food were you eating?"
Hearing his question, Katherine knew someone at home must have informed him!
She pouted and said irritably, "You already know, so why ask?"
Alex narrowed his eyes. "Why did Bernard come to our house while I was away? And he even cooked for you?"
Seeing his jealous expression, Katherine found it cute and teased him. "Maybe he was just itching to show off, so he came over to our house!"
The words "our house" made Alex's cold face soften, but he was still displeased. "Why did you eat another man's cooking? Didn't I tell you not to?"
Katherine pouted. "I didn't eat it casually. I thought it through! Bernard isn't stupid. Even if he wanted to harm me, he wouldn't come to our house to poison me! Right, Alex?"
Katherine's repeated use of "our house" made it hard for him to stay angry. He sighed and asked seriously, "What did he come to see you about?"
Katherine said, "It's a long story! You focus on your work, and I'll tell you everything when you get back!"
His frown deepened, clearly dissatisfied with her answer.
Bernard wouldn't visit the Melville family without a significant reason.
Today, he made an exception for Katherine, so it must be important.
And Katherine was being so nonchalant about it!
"Alex, look at this!" Katherine showed off her spoils of the day.
Alex looked at the stack of green bills she was waving in front of the camera. Being indifferent to money, he just raised an eyebrow. "What's the big deal?"
"This is the salary Bernard owed me when I worked at the Mitchell Group! He'd owed me this for ages!" Katherine's face lit up with joy, and she beamed at the serious man on the screen. "Alex, when you get off work, I'll treat you to dinner!"
Alex paused, looking at the lively girl on the screen. The displeasure on his face dissipated instantly. "You're so generous?"
"Of course!" Katherine arrogantly lifted her chin. "I don't treat just anyone! Alex, you're lucky!"
Alex's lips curled slightly. "Oh? What are you planning to treat me to?"
