Chapter 433 A Surprise for You
Scarlett felt annoyed and unwelcome when Katherine showed up, but she had to fake a sweet smile.
"Yeah, that's right! Katherine, you were worried about me. The doctor just checked me out and said I'm fine."
Katherine nodded. "Good to hear. After all those tests, we can relax! I was worried too much saffron might've hurt you and messed with your chances of having kids at your age!"
Scarlett's face stiffened, and everyone frowned.
Everyone knew Scarlett couldn't have kids. Katherine's comment seemed like a low blow.
Scarlett quickly put on a hurt look. "Katherine, you know... I can't get pregnant... Are you mocking me?"
Sunny, still weak, frowned and hoarsely said, "Katherine, don't bully Scarlett!"
Katherine glanced at Sunny, ignored him, and turned to Scarlett with a hint of regret. "Sorry, I forgot you lost that ability saving Alex. I didn't mean it. You're not mad, right?"
Scarlett didn't buy it; she thought Katherine was just being mean.
But this time, Katherine's words didn't hurt Scarlett; they gave her a chance to play the victim.
Scarlett laughed inside and looked at Alex, who was standing next to Katherine.
She saw Alex frowning and glaring at Katherine. He must've thought Katherine's words were too much.
Scarlett pretended to endure the hurt and generously forgive, shaking her head with a bitter smile. "Katherine, I know you didn't mean it. I'm not mad. I'm just so envious of you, that you can have kids while I never will..."
Her voice started to break, and her eyes turned red.
Already looking pitiful, her sadness and tears made her even more so.
Katherine, however, was indifferent, raising an eyebrow. "Who knows? Maybe one day you'll find out you can get pregnant. Don't be discouraged; find a boyfriend and give it a try; maybe you'll get lucky!"
"Katherine!"
This time, it was Bernard who spoke.
His tone was heavy, with a hint of intimidation.
He felt guilty towards Katherine and wanted to protect her, but he also knew that infertility was a lifelong sorrow for a woman.
Scarlett had been declared infertile since childhood, which was a huge blow. Katherine's words were too much!
Seeing Bernard defend her again, Scarlett felt a renewed hope of being pampered and protected by him, and she took the chance to cry and throw herself into Bernard's arms.
Bernard, feeling sympathetic, hesitated but didn't push her away.
He sighed deeply, looking at Katherine with a helpless tone. "That's enough, Katherine. Stop."
Katherine chuckled. "Bernard, feeling sorry for your dear sister again?"
Bernard stayed silent, caught between the two sisters.
Alice, pretending to be distressed about her daughter's situation, stepped in. "Ms. Galatea, I admit I wronged you today, but my daughter is innocent! You can't talk to her like that. She's already suffering from infertility at such a young age. How can you say such hurtful things?"
Katherine looked at Alice. "Yes, your daughter is so pitiful. Then why did you give her so much saffron today? Who's really hurting her, me or you?"
Alice's face stiffened, momentarily speechless.
Scarlett, tear-streaked, turned from Bernard's embrace. "Katherine, I know my mom had ill intentions towards you today, and you might hold a grudge. But she was just confused and won't do it again! If you're angry, take it out on me! If you need to vent, I'll kneel and apologize to you, okay?"
Scarlett actually started to kneel.
Katherine quickly stopped her, chuckling. "Please don't! I can't accept such a grand gesture! I was just joking, teasing you a bit. Why take it so seriously? Crying and kneeling like this!"
Scarlett's face stiffened again, her expression twisted with suppressed anger.
Katherine let go of Scarlett's hand and smiled. "Scarlett, forgive me. I know my words were harsh, but I wanted to give you a surprise, so I had to build up some suspense first!"
Scarlett snapped out of her thoughts. "...A surprise?"
Katherine smiled mysteriously and nodded. "Yes! A big surprise!"
Scarlett frowned, wary. "What surprise?"
Katherine raised an eyebrow with a smile. "Why don't you guess?"
Scarlett, feeling played, had to act clueless. "Katherine, I can't guess..."
Everyone present frowned, having their own opinions about Katherine's mysterious behavior.
Sunny, lying on the sickbed, was the most straightforward, impatiently urging, "Katherine, stop keeping us in suspense. Just tell us the surprise! It's driving us crazy!"
Katherine looked at Sunny with disdain and snorted. "You're so sick, yet you still can't stay quiet!"
Sunny glared back. "I do what I want!"
Katherine ignored Sunny, turned back to Scarlett, and smiled. "Alright, let me tell you the big surprise!"
With that, Katherine pulled out a crumpled piece of paper from her pocket.
