Chapter 696 Can You Not Go?
Bernard said coolly, "Don't sweat it. Even if you didn't ask, I'd make sure she's safe and sound."
Alex nodded, "Thanks."
Bernard then asked, "When are you heading out?"
"Tonight."
"Alright, let's grab dinner tonight."
Alex was a bit taken aback by the invite. "Isn't she not letting me into the Mitchell mansion?"
Bernard's tone had a hint of sarcasm, "Yeah, with all your current drama, you're not exactly welcome at the Mitchell mansion."
He added, "But if Brent ends up locking you up and handing you over to Sophia, tonight might be the last time you and Katherine see each other. I don't want Katherine to have any regrets. So, let's meet up tonight and have dinner before you go."
If he had his way, Bernard would prefer Katherine to find someone with a simpler life and settle down.
Alex wasn't his ideal brother-in-law.
Sure, Alex had a strong background, but it was way too complicated. Being with Alex would never be easy or stable.
But after seeing how determined Katherine was to be with Alex, even while pregnant and seeking revenge for him, Bernard knew how much Alex meant to her.
If something happened to Alex in Markovia, Katherine would still go after him without a second thought.
So, Alex being okay meant Katherine would be okay.
Being good to Alex was, in a way, being good to Katherine.
Katherine was heavily pregnant and could give birth any day now. She couldn't handle more stress. If Alex explained his plans, Katherine would be more at ease and wouldn't overthink.
Even though Bernard's words were harsh, his intentions were good, and Alex appreciated it. "There's no possibility of what you're worried about. But, thanks."
"Alright, I'll send you the time and place later."
It was a dinner invite, but not at home. Bernard remembered his promise to Katherine not to let Alex in.
After hanging up with Alex, Bernard called Katherine. "Katherine."
"Yes?"
Katherine's voice had a lazy tone. "Mr. Mitchell, what's up?"
Hearing "Mr. Mitchell," Bernard felt a bit helpless and rubbed his brows.
As expected, the "Brother" at the hospital was just Katherine trying to calm him down, not forgiving him.
"Katherine, can we have dinner together tonight?"
Katherine found it odd. "Haven't we been having dinner together every day lately?"
Bernard felt a bit awkward. "Tonight's different. We're going out."
Katherine asked suspiciously, "Where to?"
Bernard didn't spill the beans. "Just get ready. I'll pick you and Sunny up after work."
Katherine said, "Alright."
After arranging things with Katherine, Bernard saw a message from Alex with the time and place, along with a note: [I'll handle tonight. Just bring her over.]
At 7 PM, Katherine wore a loose yellow maternity dress with some ruffles and casually tied her hair into a bun before heading out with Bernard.
When they got to the restaurant and stepped into the private room, Katherine saw Alex already sitting there and immediately frowned. "Why is Alex here?"
She turned to Bernard, clearly annoyed that he hadn't given her a heads-up about Alex being there.
Bernard noticed her anger and, expecting it, explained gently, "He's treating us tonight. Katherine, Mr. Melville is heading abroad later. Think of this as a farewell dinner."
Hearing this, Katherine felt a strange sensation. He was leaving again?
Katherine sneered, "Mr. Melville is always jetting off somewhere. Why does he need a special farewell now? Is he not planning to come back this time?"
Her tone had a hint of sarcasm, reflecting her discomfort and irritation. Alex stood up and walked over to pull out a chair for her. "Do you want me not to come back?"
Katherine replied, "Can I decide your travel plans?"
Alex didn't rush to explain. "Sit first."
Katherine didn't hesitate and sat down.
Sunny then asked, "Alex, where are you going this time? How long will you be gone?"
Alex answered, "Markovia. If all goes well, I'll be back in three days."
Katherine took a sip of lemon water, deep in thought, and said nothing more.
Alex gestured for Bernard and Sunny to sit down, then pulled out a chair next to Katherine and sat beside her.
They discussed the menu, while Katherine remained silent, with Alex and Bernard ordering a few dishes for her.
When the food arrived, Katherine still hadn't lifted her head, lost in thought.
Alex placed a piece of chicken in her bowl. "What are you thinking about? Why aren't you talking?"
Katherine, having not eaten anything yet, suddenly raised her head and glared at him, seemingly unable to hold back any longer. "Why are you going to Markovia?"
Alex paused for a moment, then honestly replied, "To deal with things that upset you and come back with an explanation."
Katherine frowned tightly. "Do you have to go now?"
Alex raised an eyebrow. "Don't you want me to resolve it quickly?"
Katherine fell silent.
Of course, she wanted him to quickly resolve his marriage issues with Sophia, but she couldn't explain why she didn't want him to go now. She had a bad feeling that something might go wrong in Markovia.
Seeing her remain silent, Alex added more food to her plate. "Eat first. You can question me later."
Alex's tone was patient and gentle, like coaxing a child.
Katherine absentmindedly picked up her fork and started eating.
At this moment, Bernard stood up. "You guys go ahead. I need to take a call."
As he walked out, he cast a meaningful glance at Sunny.
Sunny immediately understood Bernard's hint and with the excuse of using the bathroom, he left as well.
So, only Alex and Katherine were left in the room.
Alex just served her soup without saying anything.
After a long silence, Katherine spoke first, "Alex., can you not go to Markovia?"
