Chapter 149 Alex, Save Me, I'm Scared
When Katherine woke up again, it was already dark outside the window. The side effects of the anti-allergy medication she was on made her very sleepy, and she had slept deeply. However, she felt somewhat better and could sit up on her own.
As soon as she sat up, she instinctively looked around and saw a tall, imposing figure of a man sitting on the sofa in the hospital room. She was startled and took a closer look—it was Alex!
Alex was lazily leaning on the sofa, supporting his forehead with one hand. He had a laptop on his lap, seemingly engrossed in some important work and reading quickly.
He inquired, "You're awake?"
His eyes were still fixed on the laptop, not even raising an eyebrow, yet he knew she had woken up.
Katherine frowned and asked in surprise, "Alex, why are you still here?"
Alex glanced at her, took a sip of coffee from the table, and said, "You told me not to leave before you fell asleep, remember?"
Katherine awkwardly tugged at the corner of her mouth. "Well, didn't I say you could leave once Teresa came back? Where's Teresa?"
She looked around but didn't see Teresa in the room.
"Leander took her home," the man replied calmly.
Katherine's face turned sour. Teresa was gone, leaving her alone with Alex in the room.
Alex raised an eyebrow and asked, "What? Are you disappointed that I'm here keeping you company?"
Keeping company, a perfectly innocent term, somehow sounded different coming from his mouth.
Yes, she was disappointed, but there was nothing she could do about it! Teresa was already gone.
Katherine sighed helplessly and glanced over at the man, noticing that Alex was eating something with a small fork while looking at his laptop.
After sleeping all day, she was hungry too. Smacking her lips, she asked, "Alex, what are you eating?"
The man replied naturally, just one word, "Cake."
Cake? Since when did Alex like sweets?
Suddenly thinking of something, Katherine's eyes widened. "Is it my chestnut cake?"
"Yes."
"That's for me! Who told you to eat it?" snapped she.
The man replied righteously, "You've been asleep for so long. This kind of cake spoils easily at room temperature. It would be a waste not to eat it."
Katherine frowned and ordered, "Now that I'm awake, give it to me. I can eat it myself!"
"If you want it, come and get it yourself."
"Hmph." Katherine got out of bed to get it. When she reached the sofa, she found that there was only a small piece of cake left, and Alex had already taken a bite out of it!
She was very frustrated and reached out with her two swollen hands to take the cake.
Just as she picked up the plate, the man's long fingers pressed it back onto the table. "Sit down, let's eat together."
"It's mine!" Katherine looked protective, her brows furrowed.
Alex's eyes held a hint of justified dominance. "I can't eat; what's yours?"
Katherine was really angry. "You've already eaten so much. Why are you still fighting with me!"
Saying this, she tried to take the plate and leave.
The man's large hand lifted, and his long fingers easily pinched the other side of the plate, pulling both the plate and her closer. "Ms. Galatea, are you so stingy that you can't share a piece of cake with someone who brought you to the hospital and watched over you all day?"
Katherine's hands were bandaged, but she didn't let go, holding onto the plate tightly. "This is the last piece today. I want to eat it myself! I'll make you another one some other day!"
"Deal." He suddenly let go, and due to inertia, Katherine lost her balance and fell into the man's arms.
Fortunately, the cake didn't fall, as the man's large hand caught it in time.
Her chin hit the man's collarbone hard, and she could feel his bone structure even through the shirt.
Instinctively, she propped herself up but accidentally brushed against the man's cheek, making her face itch.
She scratched her face and complained, "Alex, you need to shave your beard! You prickly man!"
"Really?" Alex raised an eyebrow, one hand clasping her waist, pulling her back into his arms, and deliberately rubbing his stubble against her delicate skin.
Katherine's face turned red from his rubbing, not knowing if it was from anger or embarrassment. "Alex! You... you stop it!"
Alex let go, his tired eyes looking at her. "I haven't slept for two days. I had no time to shave it."
Katherine was stunned. Two days without sleep? The previous night, he had been having fun with Scarlett all night, so of course, he hadn't slept!
Seeing the look of disdain on Katherine's face, Alex frowned and asked, "Disgusted by me? What man doesn't grow a beard?"
Katherine snapped out of it, got off him, and shook her head from a distance. "No, you look handsome even with a beard."
Whether he had a beard or not had nothing to do with her, so why should she care?
"You think I'm handsome? Hmm?" Alex's eyes lit up, rarely hearing a compliment from Katherine.
Katherine was straightforward. "Your handsomeness is a fact, not about what I think."
"Then why are you so cold to me?" asked he.
"Just because you're handsome, I should be warm to you? There are plenty of handsome men in the world. Should I be affectionate to each one? Is that appropriate?" answered she.
Alex's face darkened, and he pulled her over to sit on the sofa, forcefully placing the cake plate in front of her. "Stop dreaming, eat your cake!"
Katherine was forced to sit down and grunted in displeasure. Fine, she would eat!
Her hands were swollen, but she could still hold the small fork. She stopped fussing and obediently sat on the sofa, eating the cake, occasionally glancing at Alex's laptop screen.
He didn't bother her anymore, continuing to focus on reviewing the documents on his laptop, his long fingers occasionally tapping the keyboard, sometimes making notes.
Katherine felt bored and restless, sucking on the cake fork, and asked, "Alex, when can I be discharged?"
Alex replied, "At least three days."
Three days! That was too long.
She didn't want to stay in the hospital! So she tried to negotiate, "As long as I avoid allergens, I'll be fine. Can I go home to recover? Alex..."
He turned his head, looked at Katherine, who was about to take a bite of cake, raised an eyebrow, and opened his mouth.
Seeing this, Katherine was stunned. Was Alex... begging for food? And his eyes seemed to carry a hint of coercion?
Was he implying that If she wanted to negotiate, she had to feed him? Understanding his meaning, Katherine felt a bit annoyed! But she really didn't want to stay in the hospital for three days. After thinking it over, she decided to put down the bite of cake she was about to eat and get a new fork to feed Alex.
Before she could put it down, her wrist was grabbed by his large hand, and he forcibly pulled her hand over, making her feed him.
The man ate the bite of cake from her fork without any hesitation.
Katherine's heart skipped a beat. She quickly threw the fork away and got a new one for herself.
Alex frowned. "Do you despise me that much?"
Katherine cleared her throat and said, "It's not sanitary. Sharing utensils is like exchanging bacteria! You may not mind, but I do!"
Alex snorted, "Too late. Between you and me, we've already cross-contaminated."
Cross... cross-contaminated!
Though he didn't say it explicitly, it was clear he was referring to that night.
That night, when he was poisoned, she lost control; their lips and bodies intertwined, and their souls resonated.
She had wanted to forget it! Why did he have to bring it up?
Katherine couldn't take it anymore. "Alex!!!"
Seeing Katherine's flushed face, Alex felt avenged for for the annoyance she had caused him earlier, and he couldn't help but chuckle.
He stopped teasing her and raised his hand to rub her head. "Alright, don't eat too much sweet stuff. There will be a hot meal coming soon."
Katherine was stunned. Alex's mood swings were so erratic. Was he a bit bipolar?!
She turned her face away, unhappily muttering. This annoying man always teased her! So boring!
At that moment, the phone vibrated. Katherine put down the cake fork and went to the cabinet to get the phone. She had been using Alex's phone recently, which had all his contacts, with only Leander and Hilton occasionally calling.
The current call was from an unsaved number.
Katherine picked up the phone, her hands wrapped in bandages, so she used her chin to swipe the screen and answer the call.
Scarlett's terrified voice came through the receiver. "Ah! Help! Don't, don't come near! Alex, I'm scared, save me, come quickly."
Katherine frowned, not hesitating, and quickly walked over to hand the phone to Alex. "Alex, it's for you. Your Scarlett seems to be in trouble!"
