Chapter 163 The Real Mastermind is Her!
David went out to make a call to hurry up the witness.
Sophie stood up, crossed her arms, and took a few steps forward. In a kindly advising tone, she said, "Katherine, don't think that hiring a top lawyer will get you off the hook! You dared to harm Scarlett. Bernard would never let you get away with it! I suggest you stop struggling and accept the judgment of the law. Maybe if you show a good attitude, you might get a lighter sentence!"
Katherine raised an eyebrow and glanced at Sophie, looking bored and uninterested in responding.
Seeing that Katherine had no reaction at all, Sophie felt like she had a bone stuck in her throat!
Every time Sophie dealt with Katherine, it was like punching a pillow—utterly unsatisfying!
It seemed that no matter what happened, Katherine would never lose her composure. She wouldn't even get excited about anything, always maintaining that calm and indifferent demeanor. It made people really want to slap her, to see if she could feel pain!
Sunny sat on the side, staring intently at Katherine with bright eyes. His gaze was filled with disappointment and anger, along with a bit of conflicted emotion, but he said nothing.
Scarlett, nestled in Bernard's arms, slowly turned her head and spoke kindly but reluctantly, "Katherine, Sophie is actually right. If you admit your guilt, I will persuade Bernard to sign a letter of understanding to try to get you a lighter sentence. So, it would help if you stopped making things worse. It will only make Bernard angrier, which won't be good for you."
Katherine curled her lips. "Scarlett, why do you and Sophie seem so afraid of me making things worse?"
Scarlett's eyes flickered, and she frowned in grievance, explaining, "Katherine, I'm just thinking of your. I'm afraid you'll make more mistakes in a moment of confusion. I'm not afraid of anything else."
"Really?" Katherine smiled, then lowered her eyes, not looking at her again.
Seeing Scarlett's good intentions being taken as malice, Bernard's handsome eyes narrowed in displeasure. "Ms. Galatea, due to your previous help, I don't want to push you to the brink. Do you really want to escalate things to a point where you can't handle it?"
Katherine yawned. "Well, thank you so much for your generosity, Mr. Mitchell. Unfortunately, there's nothing I can't handle, so do as you please!"
Bernard's cold gaze fixed on Katherine's fearless demeanor, and a complex frown gradually formed on his brow.
What kind of family environment could possibly shape a girl, who was meant to be gentle and kind, into someone so insidious, vicious, and utterly without shame?
Sophie glared at Katherine with disgust. "Bernard, don't bother with her! Katherine is just a country girl! Once she's convicted, she'll have plenty of time to weep for her crime! Bernard, don't go soft and sign any letter of understanding for her. She should be punished as severely as possible; otherwise, she will never learn to repent!"
Just as Sophie finished speaking, the door suddenly opened, and a seven or eight-year-old boy ran in, heading straight for Ethan. "Daddy!"
The boy tried to throw himself into his father's arms but failed because his father was handcuffed and couldn't open his arms. He paused, looking confused and unwilling to accept it, and questioned his father, "Dad, why are you wearing handcuffs? On TV, only bad guys wear handcuffs. Dad, did you do something bad?"
Seeing his son, Ethan's emotional defenses crumbled in an instant. He hung his head in shame and said, "Son, I didn't mean to..."
The young boy's faith shattered, his face wounded, as he took a step back. "Dad, how could you do something bad? Didn't you always teach me to be a good person? How could you do this? You're not my dad, I don't want a bad person like you as my dad."
"Bob Davis! Don't you talk to your dad like that!" Behind the young boy, a modestly dressed woman walked in, scolding the child before turning to her husband with a mix of sorrow and urgency.
She said, "Ethan, won't you please tell the truth? Do you want our child to forever live in the shadow of his father being a bad person?"
Seeing his wife and son safe and sound, Ethan breathed a sigh of relief, feeling ashamed to face his family. With his head hung low, he murmured, "Darling, I'm so glad you and Bob are okay. As long as you're safe, everything is alright."
"Yes, we're fine now, we've been rescued!" The woman, her eyes red with emotion, leaned against her husband's shoulder. "But Ethan, how could you be so foolish? You lost your job and didn't even tell me. You've been out there working alone for so long, and then you let yourself be manipulated into doing such terrible things! Ethan, please tell the police the truth. Maybe we can still hope for leniency."
"My dear... I'm sorry. As long as you and Bob are safe, I have nothing else to worry about." Tears streamed down Ethan's face as he wiped them away, then he looked up at the officers and declared, "Sir, I need to reveal the truth! The reason I confessed before was because my wife and son were kidnapped, and someone used their safety to threaten me into making those false statements!"
The officers were stunned by this revelation. "What? Who kidnapped your wife and son?"
Everyone present was equally shocked by this sudden turn of events.
A cautious officer furrowed his brow and warned Ethan, "Are you sure you want to change your testimony now? If you lie again, the consequences will be severe."
Ethan nodded firmly. "I'm sure. I want to tell the truth! Officers, I was truly manipulated and threatened into committing those acts against Ms. Mitchell, but it wasn't Katherine who bribed or coerced me. There is someone else behind all of this!"
On the sidelines, Bernard raised an eyebrow, waiting for the culprit to be revealed.
Sunny's eyes widened with anticipation, eager to uncover the whole truth.
Scarlett remained nestled in her brother's embrace, still hesitant to look at Ethan, yet deeply surprised by the unfolding events.
Riddled with restlessness, Sophie had been hungrily awaiting Katherine's downfall, yet she now found herself blindsided by Katherine's uncanny ability to flip the script. She thought, 'What a cunning and devious woman!'
David returned calmly and confidently, stating, "Mr. Mitchell, these two individuals are the new witnesses I mentioned. As you can see, they are Ethan's wife and son! They were held captive in an abandoned building on the outskirts, used as leverage to threaten Ethan into framing my client."
Bernard shot a glance at David, then turned his narrowed eyes back to Ethan, uttering coldly, "Who is it?"
David urged Ethan. "Mr. Mitchell, your wife and son have been rescued. It's time to speak the truth. Tell everyone who is truly behind all of this."
