Chapter 608 Isn't It?
Katherine couldn't shake the feeling that Alex was eyeballing her fork. She kept shoveling food into her mouth, even though it wasn't her favorite, just wanting to get this dinner over with ASAP.
But with her being pregnant and all, the food was making her queasy. Trying to keep it together, she stood up and said, "Gotta hit the restroom for a sec."
She bolted, leaving her phone on the table. Not long after she left, her phone buzzed twice.
Sophia reached for it, but Alex snapped, "Hands off other people's stuff!"
Sophia shrugged. "Chill, I was just gonna take it to Moon in the restroom. What if it's important?"
Ignoring Alex, Sophia grabbed Katherine's phone and stood up. She glanced at the screen and froze. Then, she handed it to Alex. "Alex, check this out!"
Alex wasn't into snooping, but since Sophia shoved it in his face, he couldn't help but look. Then his eyes widened.
Katherine came back after throwing up and freshening up, not noticing anything weird at the table.
Sophia said, "Moon, your phone was buzzing earlier. Someone was trying to reach you."
Katherine realized she left her phone and felt a bit freaked out. Seeing it was still where she left it, she relaxed.
"Thanks for the heads-up," she said, picking up her phone. She saw a message from Jonathan: [Baby, where are you? The driver said he couldn't find you.]
Katherine rolled her eyes at the "baby" thing and typed back: [I'm having dinner with Alex. Have the car come get me here!]
She sent him the restaurant's location.
Jonathan saw her message and his smile faded. He wanted to call her but figured she might not be able to talk with Alex around. So he replied cautiously: [Everything okay?]
Katherine quickly texted back: [All good.]
'Better pick her up quick and keep her away from Alex. That guy's sharp and will catch on to anything,' Jonathan thought as he grabbed his coat and rushed out of the office, feeling he had to get her himself to be sure.
After texting Jonathan, Katherine put down her phone and picked up her fork.
"If you don't like the food, don't force it," Alex said, hinting at something.
Katherine paused mid-bite and looked up at Alex, catching him giving her that suspicious look again.
"It's not that I don't like it. I ordered all this myself, so how could I not like it?" Katherine forced a smile, hiding behind her scarred fake face.
Sophia jumped in with a new topic, "Moon, you said your inspiration for the Melville Group Tower came from love, but it seems things didn't end well. Mind sharing why you and your lover split?"
Katherine frowned, clearly annoyed. "That's personal. No need to get into it."
Sophia, still curious, pressed on, "I'm just curious. What kind of guy could inspire you to design such an amazing building like the Melville Group Tower? Bet he was a looker, right?"
Katherine didn't deny it. "Yeah. He was pretty handsome, but that doesn’t really matter."
Sophia's eyes sparkled. "Seems like you still have some resentment towards him. What happened? Did he betray you or something?"
Katherine put down her fork. "Miss, you seem to enjoy prying into other people's business. Is that your thing?"
Sophia shook her head. "Not at all! I'm just really curious about you. I want to know why the guy who inspired you so much ended up out of the picture."
Katherine replied coldly, "We just broke up, that's all. What's so strange about that? You don't seem like someone without emotional experiences. How can you not get it? There's no such thing as unchanging love."
Sophia nodded seriously. "Yeah, you're right! Love's real when it's there, and when it's gone, it's gone. Either you fall out of love first, or he does."
Katherine picked up her cup, signaling she was done. She'd had enough and couldn't eat another bite.
Sophia's eyes gleamed with curiosity as she asked, "So, was it you who fell out of love first, or was it him?"
Katherine looked up, expressionless. "Does it matter?"
Sophia smiled. "I'm just curious. Moon, just spill it! You've already broken up, so what's the harm in talking about it?"
"There's nothing to talk about."
"Do you hate him so much that you don't even want to mention him?"
Katherine, still expressionless, said, "Yeah, you could say that."
Sophia, good at reading people, didn't stop. "He must've betrayed you, right? That's why you hate him so much?"
Katherine showed her displeasure. "Miss, ever heard the saying 'curiosity killed the cat'?"
Sophia shrugged. "Doesn't matter. I've always been super curious, and if I don't get answers, I can't sleep at night. Moon, please tell me."
