Chapter 408 Digging to the Bottom
Vincent frowned. He knew Katherine mentioned was Alex!
Such a good girl, how did she get mixed up with the Melville family? What a shame!
"Katherine, where did your mom go?" Hellen asked.
Katherine's brow furrowed slightly, showing a hint of displeasure.
Vincent noticed and said, "Alright, Hellen. Why are you so curious today? Stop asking about her sad past. We invited her to thank her for saving us, and you're making her upset!"
Hellen noticed too and apologized. "Katherine, I'm sorry for bringing up sad memories."
Katherine shook her head lightly. "It's okay, you're just concerned about me."
Hellen couldn't shake her curiosity. "Katherine, do you mind if I ask one last question?"
Vincent frowned. "You still have questions? Let her enjoy her meal!"
Katherine calmly replied, "It's alright. I'm already full. Go ahead, ma'am."
Hellen scrutinized her face. "Katherine, did you have a mole removed from your face when you were a child? Maybe on your forehead?"
Vincent was initially stunned but then realized what Hellen was suspecting. He also examined Katherine's features closely.
Katherine shook her head. "No."
Hellen persisted. "Are you sure? Maybe your family had it removed when you were young, and you just don't remember?"
Katherine smiled. "Ma'am, you said that was your last question! Can I skip this one?"
Hellen still looked eager but smiled apologetically. "Sorry, Katherine, I asked too much. If you're full, how about some dessert? Try the cookies I baked."
She placed a plate of cookies in front of Katherine.
Katherine didn't hold back, picked up a cookie, and took a bite, clearly impressed. "Hmm! Delicious, just the right amount of sweetness, and richer than store-bought ones!"
Hellen beamed with joy. "Really? If you like them, have more! I can bake more if you want!"
Katherine restrained herself. "One is enough. My husband doesn't let me eat too many sweets; he'll scold me if he finds out."
Vincent was displeased. "Katherine, how dare Alex criticize you? Does he treat you badly?"
Katherine shook her head. "So far, Alex has been good to me. He doesn't let me eat too many sweets for my health, not to restrict my freedom."
Vincent, who despised the Melville family, grunted in disapproval.
"Katherine, if you ever change your mind and don't want to be with that guy, just let me know. I'll introduce you to someone better!"
Someone better than Alex? Probably not in this world—at least not in her eyes.
Katherine smiled helplessly. "Thank you, but that won't be necessary."
Vincent, both worried and concerned, advised earnestly, "You silly girl, you're still young. Don't tie yourself to one old tree; explore the whole forest before making a choice!!"
Katherine raised an eyebrow and teased, "Mr. Vincent Mitchell, besides Mrs. Hellen Mitchell, do you have another big forest out there?"
Vincent was taken aback.
How did this turn on him?
Hellen laughed and glanced at Vincent. "I think he wants to find his big forest, too! Men only settle down when they're finally pinned down!"
Vincent frowned. "No! Hellen, what are you talking about? We've spent a lifetime together; am I that kind of person?"
Hellen sneered. "If you're not that kind of person, then why are you teaching Katherine such nonsense?"
Vincent fell silent.
He just couldn't stand seeing such a good girl marry into the Melville family's mess. He wanted to save her!
Vincent sighed and turned to Katherine, speaking earnestly, "Katherine, Hellen and I are different. We grew up together, are of similar age, and know each other well. We're genuinely together, with nothing hidden.”
“But Alex is nearly ten years older than you. You don't know him well. You can't grasp the depth of an older man's scheming in a short time!”
“I just think you're still young and should take your time to choose someone suitable for you."
Katherine knew the Mitchell and Melville families had been at odds for years, so it was natural for Vincent to dislike Alex.
She didn't think much of Vincent's words and casually brushed them off, then found an excuse to leave. "Can I take some of these cookies with me? Sunny just asked me to help him with his homework, and I can bring some cookies for him."
Hellen answered, "Of course, take them all! Katherine, we invited you over as a guest, but now we're troubling you to help Sunny with his homework. I'm really sorry!"
Katherine smiled. "It's no trouble. I already know him, and helping him is also a way for me to review what I learned so I don't forget!"
Hellen looked at her with admiration and nodded with a smile. "Good girl, go ahead! I'll send someone to call you for dinner later."
"Okay!"
Then, Katherine left with a plate of cookies.
Once outside the room, she sighed inof relief.
Vincent always wanted to break her and Alex up, and Hellen seemed very suspicious of her identity, constantly probing.
If she didn't find an excuse to leave, she might slip up!
Inside the room, after Katherine left, their expressions turned serious.
Vincent frowned and asked, "Hellen, you asked Katherine so many questions about her background and even if she had a mole on her forehead as a child. Are you suspecting..."
Hellen didn't deny it. "Don't you think the look in her eyes is very similar to our Laura's?"
As Katherine carried the cookies upstairs to find Sunny, she suddenly smelled a strong perfume.
The scent wasn't cheap; it was clearly an expensive, well-crafted perfume.
But no matter how good the perfume was, too much of it can be overwhelming.
She looked up, following the scent, and saw Scarlett, dressed meticulously, coming downstairs.
"Katherine, what are you doing in my house?"
