Chapter 908 Why Did You Lie?
Linda sized up the obese Joshua and said to Brent's subordinate, "Let him in, you guys stand guard at the door! I'll call you if I need anything!"
"Yes!"
After responding, the leader in black pushed Joshua two steps into the ward, "Get in there and behave! We're right outside, try causing trouble and see what happens."
In such a situation, Joshua nodded and obediently walked into the ward.
He also wanted to know what kind of trouble Lillian and Sherry had gotten into; even if he died, he wanted to know the truth!
He thought he would see some fierce underground boss after entering, but to his surprise, there were only two gentle-looking women, one lying on the hospital bed receiving an IV, and the other sitting beside her.
Joshua was stunned for a second, then recognized the woman lying on the bed, "Claire. It's you!"
Seeing Joshua, Claire's pale face showed a hint of anger, "Surprised you can still recognize me!"
Seeing it was a classmate, Joshua's tense nerves finally relaxed, "Of course, I can recognize you! Claire, you haven't changed a bit over the years, you still look the same!"
How could he not recognize her? How could he ever forget?
She was his college crush, his lifelong regret!
Claire sneered, "Thanks for the compliment!"
Joshua noticed Claire's tone was not as gentle and kind as before, and he realized, "Claire, it was you who had those people bring me here?"
Claire nodded, "Yes, it was me."
Joshua smiled obsequiously, "We're classmates, you didn't need to use such a scary method to see me! I thought I had offended someone!"
Claire looked at Joshua with sarcasm and disgust, regretting how she had entrusted Katherine to such a man in her desperation back then!
"Joshua, I didn't call you here to reminisce!"
Joshua looked at her, "Yes, I can see that. So, what is it about? Why are you in the hospital receiving an IV, are you sick? Why did those people search my house and beat up my wife and daughter, what's going on?"
Before Claire could speak, Linda stepped forward and complained, "Your wife and daughter deserved to be beaten! They are the ones who hurt Claire like this!"
Joshua was stunned. Before being brought here, he had asked Lillian and Sherry what had happened, but they were evasive and couldn't give a clear answer!
Now, hearing this young girl's words, Joshua roughly guessed and looked at Claire with some embarrassment, "Claire, did you go to my house?"
Claire said, "I went to your house, met your daughter, told her I was looking for you, and she locked me, my friend, and my friend's child in your attic. In the end, your wife even stabbed me."
Joshua felt a pang of guilt on his face, but inside, he was seething with anger, wishing he could go back right now and deal with that troublesome mother and daughter!
Linda was right, they deserved it!
"Claire, I'm sorry my family hurt you! I apologize on their behalf, and I'll cover your medical expenses!"
Claire's expression was indifferent, and she let out a cold snort, "No need. I called you here to ask about my daughter."
Hearing Claire mention her daughter, Joshua's face turned very grim.
"I'm truly sorry about that. I failed to take good care of your daughter, and she passed away at a young age."
Claire's brows furrowed, "Even now, you won't tell me the truth?"
Joshua's expression was guilty, "What truth? Claire, I told you this years ago and even gave you your daughter's urn."
Claire, who had been leaning against the headboard, sat up straight in anger at Joshua's unrepentant attitude, "I should ask you! What was in the urn you gave me? My daughter never died!"
Joshua's pupils dilated, his guilt more apparent, his eyes darting around, not daring to look at her, "What? That's impossible! Your daughter did die, really! She really died!"
Claire looked at the man who had caused her and her daughter to be separated for years, almost spitting blood in anger.
"You're lying! Don't curse my daughter! Joshua, I'll give you one more chance. If you don't tell the truth, I'll have those people outside talk to you alone!"
Hearing this, Joshua was clearly scared, "Claire, what are you doing? We're classmates, I even helped take care of your daughter. How can you be so ungrateful?"
Ungrateful? That was the funniest thing she'd ever heard. Claire took a deep breath, trying to stay calm and composed, "Yes! When I was desperate, you helped me and agreed to take care of my daughter for a while! But did you really take good care of her? Did you?"
Joshua was very guilty, "I..."
Claire didn't expect him to admit it and interrupted, "My daughter must have suffered a lot of bullying from your wife and daughter, right? She was so young, and you found her troublesome, so you abandoned her in the countryside! The necklace I gave you as a thank-you gift could have provided her with good food and drink, right? But you gave her nothing, you didn't care for her at all!"
Knowing he couldn't deny it anymore, Joshua tried to find an excuse, "No! Claire, I sent her to a relative in the countryside and asked them to take good care of her! I didn't mean to, but she was affecting my family's harmony, my wife and daughter didn't like her, I had no choice!"
Claire's eyes were red with anger, "Even if you sent her to the countryside, why did you tell me she was dead when I came back to get her? Why did you do that? If you didn't want to raise her, why didn't you let me take her back?"
Joshua looked ashamed but couldn't give a reason.
Claire had come back to him for her child, and he had indeed told her that her daughter had died.
