Chapter 527 Alex Was Scared
As Sandra was trying to get up, Katherine reached out to help, propping up the pillow behind Sandra making it easier for her to lean against the headboard.
After settling in, Sandra gently patted Katherine's hand as she chided, "Katherine, you silly, why didn't you tell Grandma you were pregnant? If it weren't for what happened today, I still wouldn't have known about it!"
Katherine, sitting by the hospital bed, smiled at Sandra and explained, "I didn't mean to hide it from you. I was just afraid you'd worry too much and start restricting what I can and can't do."
Sandra frowned slightly, a mix of kindness and sternness in her voice, "How can Grandma not worry? You're my granddaughter-in-law, and I care about you and the baby equally. You didn't want me to restrict you, and now look, you got hit by a car! Luckily, nothing serious happened, how could I bear it?"
Katherine nodded obediently, assuring her, "I understand. I'll listen to you from now on and won't run around recklessly."
Seeing that Katherine and her great-grandchild were fine, Sandra finally showed a smile. Today was a bit of a scare, but thankfully everything turned out fine. From now on, they had to be more careful and ensure Katherine was well protected.
Jackie, seeing Sandra awake, felt relieved but didn't forget to grumble to Fiona, "Look at your grandma now; all she cares about is her granddaughter-in-law!"
Hearing Jackie's jealous complaint, Fiona couldn't help but laugh.
In the past, if she saw Sandra caring so much about Katherine, she would have been angry too.
But now, having understood Katherine and knowing Scarlett's true character, Fiona had no prejudice against Katherine. She just felt that this lively and harmonious atmosphere was wonderful.
Moreover, Katherine was pregnant with Alex's child, and Fiona was about to become an aunt!
Thinking of this, Fiona instinctively looked around the hospital room and realized Alex wasn't there.
Huh? Why didn't Alex come in?
Katherine chatted with Sandra for a while, soothing her mood and coaxing her to eat something.
Fiona suddenly walked over and pulled Katherine aside, "Katherine, come here for a moment!"
Katherine handed the oatmeal to Sandra, asking her to eat it, then followed Fiona aside and asked, "What's up?"
Fiona frowned and reminded, "Don't just focus on comforting my grandma! Haven't you noticed Alex hasn't come in at all?"
Katherine knew Alex was mad at her, but Sandra's health was more urgent. Alex was young and strong; he would be fine.
Seeing Katherine's lack of reaction, Fiona put her hands on her hips, and lectured her, "Katherine! It seems like you don't care much about Alex. Do you know how upset he was when he thought you were dead? His reaction scared me!"
Katherine's eyes was filled with guilt, then she asked, "Where is he now?"
"Now you remember to care about where Alex is? Hmph!" Fiona pouted, "I just went out to look for him and found him smoking alone in the stairwell. Check on him! I'll take care of Grandma, don't worry!"
Katherine nodded and agreed, "Okay, you take good care of Grandma."
After asking Fiona to coax Sandra into eating more, Katherine left the hospital room alone.
In the long hospital corridor, she looked around and found the stairwell door. She slowly headed there.
Pushing the door open, she felt a bit cold, but luckily, she was wearing the coat Alex had draped over her.
The stairwell was dimly lit, and she could only see his silhouette leaning against the wall. He held a cigarette between his long fingers, occasionally bringing it to his lips.
In her memory, Alex hadn't smoked since he found out she was pregnant.
"Alex," she called softly, walking over slowly.
He turned his head to look at her, silently extinguishing the cigarette.
Katherine looked at him with her beautiful eyes, and asked, "Why are you hiding here smoking alone? Aren't you going to check on Grandma?"
Alex gazed at her intently, his expression unchanged, and asked, "How is Grandma?"
Katherine replied, "Grandma is awake and has eaten something. She's fine."
Alex nodded slightly, his tone devoid of emotion, "That's good."
Katherine felt uncomfortable with his demeanor and frowned, "Alex, am I bothering you by interrupting you as you smoke? Do you not want to talk to me?"
Alex looked at her without speaking.
Katherine waited quietly for a while, but he didn't say anything, making her unhappy. She said, "Sorry for bothering you. I'll leave you to it."
She turned to leave.
"Katherine, is this fun for you?" Alex suddenly asked from behind, his tone low and broken.
Katherine stopped, stunned for a moment before turning back to retort, "What's fun?"
Alex's expression darkened in displeasure as he questioned her, "Scaring me, is it fun?"
Katherine understood what he meant and pouted, "Alex, I texted you from the emergency room. You didn't check it. Then I texted Leander to tell you I was okay."
Alex's eyes darkened in anger, he gritted his teeth as he remarked, "Still not admitting your mistake? Katherine, do you want to kill me?"
Katherine was taken aback, feeling both annoyed and guilty, "Who wants to kill you?"
Alex pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly, and scolded, "Right! Some idiot wants to kill me!"
Katherine felt conflicted, still she tried to explain, "I just thought if I didn't deal with Scarlett, she'd keep causing us trouble. It was better to expose her true colors once and for all for some peace and quiet."
Alex sternly said, "So, you deliberately got hit by a car?"
Katherine frowned, defending herself, "I didn't do it on purpose. I didn't expect Sophie to use the same trick again. She had already tried to create a car accident a few days ago. Who knew she'd use the same method twice!"
Alex snorted, "You knew it was dangerous and still went along?"
Though he was scolding her, his embrace tightened. Katherine sighed, "I was wrong. I won't make you worry again."
Alex, still angry, retorted, "You plan on doing this again?"
Katherine quickly said, "There won't be a next time!"
Hearing her compliance, his anger finally subsided a bit.
