Chapter 411 Sleeping in Separate Beds

Edwin and Alice's room piqued Katherine's interest.

She was curious about the living space of her jerk biological dad and her mom's best friend, this middle-aged couple.

"Katherine, this is my parents' room! My dad loves history, so all the furniture here is genuine antiques, even more valuable than museum pieces!"

Katherine peeked inside. The room was indeed elegant and grand, with all the furniture made from precious wood and real antiques.

Scarlett wasn't lying, but she was definitely bragging.

Katherine wasn't into antiques; what grabbed her attention was the big built-in bookshelf on the west wall.

The bookshelf was packed with books.

Who read them? Edwin or Alice?

Katherine asked politely, "Can I check out these books?"

Finally, something made Katherine envious, and Scarlett felt a rare sense of satisfaction. She replied with a mix of politeness and condescension, "Sure! But be careful. Many are priceless first editions my dad collected. If you damage them, they're irreplaceable!"

She almost said outright that Katherine couldn't afford to pay for any damages!

"Sure, I'll be careful." Katherine didn't mind Scarlett's attitude. She nodded and walked over to the bookshelf, scanning the books and casually picking one up to flip through, then putting it back and picking another.

They were indeed profound works, not just pretentious literary pieces.

Edwin seemed to genuinely love reading!

Historically, jerks often turned out to be hypocrites with a wealth of knowledge!

With a hint of sarcasm on her lips, Katherine turned the page of the book in her hand and accidentally found an old photo tucked inside. She was stunned.

It was a family photo!

The same one she had seen on Bernard's desk at the Mitchell Group.

The photo included Edwin, Claire, Bernard, and a chubby little girl with a beauty mark on her forehead being held by her mom.

Katherine knew that was her!

This photo was hidden in the book, not displayed openly, probably because he wanted to avoid seeing it.

However, despite being similar, this photo was notably different from the one on Bernard's desk.

This one showed a family of four, while Bernard's had only three, with Edwin deliberately edited out.

This indicated that the relationship between father and son wasn't good.

"Katherine, what book are you so into?"

Scarlett's voice snapped Katherine out of her thoughts.

Seeing Scarlett about to peek, Katherine quickly pulled the photo from the book and hid it in her sleeve.

Scarlett saw only the text, not the photo, and frowned. "Katherine, can you read this foreign language?"

Katherine closed the book and put it back. "No, just browsing! Let's go, show me around some more!"

Before Scarlett could respond, a noise interrupted them.

Katherine's casual action of putting the book back seemed to trigger something, and the large built-in bookshelf moved, revealing a hidden door in the middle!

Katherine was stunned. "What's this?"

Scarlett frowned, looking uneasy. "Nothing! That's my dad's small study. The designer thought this hidden door looked better when they renovated. My dad's study is also full of books, nothing interesting! Katherine, let's go!"

Scarlett seemed eager to pull Katherine away, clearly not wanting her to enter the so-called 'small study.'

The more Scarlett acted strangely, the more Katherine wanted to see. "Since we're here, let me take a look."

"There's really nothing to see! Don't look!" Scarlett tried to stop Katherine, but it was too late.

Katherine moved quickly and had already stepped inside!

She saw that behind the hidden door was not a study but a simple small bedroom with a single bed.

A bedroom within a bedroom? What was going on?

Katherine squinted thoughtfully. "Do your parents sleep in separate beds?"

Scarlett's eyes flickered, and she forced a smile. "They only sleep separately when they argue. What couple doesn't have disagreements?"

Katherine raised an eyebrow. "If they argue, either of your parents could openly sleep in a guest room. Your house is big enough and has plenty of rooms. There's no need for such a hidden room, right?"

Clearly, this room was created to hide the fact that Edwin and Alice had been sleeping separately for a long time.

Scarlett's eyes darted around as she explained, "Actually, my mom can't stand my dad's snoring, which disturbs her beauty sleep, so she lets him sleep here. My mom is considerate of my dad's dignity and doesn't want the servants to see him sleeping in a guest room, which would undermine his authority. My parents have a great relationship and always consider each other's feelings!"

Katherine smirked. "I see!"

Scarlett knew that family scandals shouldn't be aired. She had always known that her parents slept in separate beds but couldn't let outsiders, especially Katherine, know!

Her mom had always wanted to change this situation, trying to get closer to her dad, but had never succeeded.

Just like Scarlett's years of futile efforts to win Alex's affection.

Who would have thought Katherine would accidentally trigger the hidden door and discover this?

Scarlett didn't know if Katherine believed her explanation, but she just wanted to get her out of this embarrassing situation quickly!

Her real purpose wasn't to show Katherine around the house; that was just a pretext!

"Alright, Katherine, you've seen my parents' room! Now let me show you the two most beautiful rooms in our house!"
