Chapter 496 Real Top Student
Frank smugly cupped his face. "Me? Innocent as always!"
Ambrosia made a gagging motion, then turned serious, looking out the car window. "Katherine, those rumor-spreading mother and daughter are here."
Katherine glanced out and saw Camlia and Fern, who had recently gone to the Melville family for 'justice.' The media swarmed them.
Reporters bombarded them with questions. Fern and Camlia stuck to their story, confidently claiming they'd ace today's exam.
Fern, no longer teary-eyed, faced the cameras with newfound confidence.
Ambrosia adjusted her gold-rimmed glasses. "That girl's acting confident, but our research shows her grades are average. Katherine, watch out for cheating."
Katherine nodded. "A live-streamed exam for everyone to see. Let's see how she plans to cheat."
She stepped out of the car.
The media, spotting Katherine, rushed towards her, but a group of burly men blocked them.
Katherine wasn't surprised; Alex, Bernard, or both could've arranged it.
With the media held back, she walked alone to the stage set for the press conference.
The stage was simple: a standing mic in the middle and a desk on each side for the exam.
Katherine sat at the left desk, waiting for the exam to start.
Seeing her, Camlia led Fern to the stage.
Fern took the right desk, while Camlia glared at Katherine.
"Katherine, admit your mistakes now, or losing to Fern will be even more humiliating!"
Katherine smirked. "We're here now. How do you know I'll lose without taking the exam?"
Camlia snorted, rolled her eyes, and turned away.
The host, arranged by the Mitchell family, came on stage, asked Camlia to step down, tested the mic, and adjusted its height.
"Members of the media, please quiet down and return to your places!”
“The live-streamed exam between Katherine and Fern is about to begin!”
’We'll live-stream to ensure fairness and transparency!"
The media, eager for headlines, quickly settled down. The host introduced the teacher who set the exam and the main subjects being tested.
He showed the front and back of the exam papers to the camera, confirming there were no issues, and handed one to each contestant.
Fern looked at her paper with determination and confidence, then glanced at Katherine.
Katherine yawned, propped her head with one hand, and twirled a pen with the other, looking like she wasn't taking the exam seriously.
Fern thought Katherine was stumped and felt even more confident, diving into her answers.
The live-stream chat exploded:
[Why does Katherine look so careless? Is she even taking the exam seriously?]
[She's always been a troublemaker. No way she'll get good grades!]
[Fern looks like a top student!]
[Fern seems super serious and confident!]
[Go Fern, down with the evil capitalists!]
[I'm from Janetrick University, and Katherine is a genuine top student here!]
[Are you getting paid to hype Katherine? How much per comment?]
[We'll see who the real top student is soon enough!]
[Even if God showed up, Fern's the real deal!]
[Go, Katherine! All of Janetrick University supports you!]
[Why are Janetrick students supporting a capitalist?]
[We're just supporting our schoolmate. How does that make us capitalist supporters?]
[Isn't Katherine backed by capital, oppressing ordinary people? Supporting her means supporting capital!]
[Janetrick students are just sucking up to the Melville Group for future jobs!]
[Top students? More like disgraceful!]
[Stop arguing! The results will be out soon. Let's wait and see!]
[Yes! Support Fern. Our hard work should pay off!]
[Katherine for the win!!!]
[Fern for the win!!!!!!]
While the online debate raged, the two exam-takers were oblivious.
The Mitchell and Melville family elders watched the live stream at home, waiting for the results.
Bernard, injured and not at the office, stayed in his penthouse, petting Raffi while watching Katherine's exam live stream.
Alex, also not at the office, stayed in his car, propping his head with one hand, squinting at the car's TV live stream.
Time ticked by, and the two contestants were almost done with their exams.
The exam was three pages long, combining high school subjects into one paper for convenience.
Fern finished first, stood up, and handed her paper to the host, who was also the proctor.
Katherine then put down her pen and raised her hand to indicate she was done.
The host collected both papers and invited the professional high school teacher who set the exam to come on stage and grade the papers live, calculating their scores.
