Chapter 389 That Girl is a Ray of Light
Alex held Katherine close, not wanting to let go. "There's an empty guest room. Put him there. He's got a high fever; don't let him catch a cold."
Scarlett, seeing Alex with Katherine, asked, "Alex, won't you hold Charles? He's been calling for you! Is it because Katherine would mind?"
She looked at Katherine and pleaded, "Katherine, can you stop competing with a child over Alex's embrace? Charles really needs his dad right now."
Before Alex could respond, Katherine said, "Compete? I don't need to compete. Alex's embrace is mine."
She leaned against Alex like he was a sofa, crossing her legs. "Scarlett, you usually seem so weak, but you got here fast. How long since you hung up the phone?"
Scarlett forced a bitter smile. "A mother's strength, Katherine. You wouldn't understand since you haven't been one."
Katherine sneered and stood up. "Scarlett, since you have a mother's strength, I'll let the baby have this embrace for a while."
She raised an eyebrow at Alex. "Alex, aren't you going to check on Charles? He's calling for you!"
Alex just squinted at Katherine, still not moving.
Seeing Katherine get up, Scarlett moved closer with Charles. "Alex, Charles really needs you. He's been calling for you non-stop at home."
Alex looked at the weak child, frowning. "Didn't I tell you to take him upstairs to rest? Holding him won't cure him. The windows are open; aren't you afraid he'll catch a cold?"
His tone was impatient.
Scarlett was stunned. Alex had always been cold, but never this annoyed.
It must be because of Katherine!
Damn, Katherine!
Since Alex didn't take the child, Scarlett laid Charles on the sofa and took out a bracelet.
"Alex, remember this bracelet? You gave it to me when we first met. You said I could come to you with it, and you'd protect me."
She wiped her tears and handed the bracelet to Alex. "I know you have Katherine now and can't take care of me. I'll return this bracelet and won't trouble you again."
Alex's eyes changed slightly as he looked at the bracelet.
It was his mother's keepsake, which he had carried since he was young.
After Scarlett saved his life, his men found him on the seventh day.
But the girl who saved him wasn't there when they arrived.
He couldn't just leave, so he told his men to wait for her and give her the bracelet as a thank-you, telling her to find him if she ever needed help.
He remembered her sucking the poison from his wound, bringing him medicine and food daily, and calling him "buddy" with simple obedience.
She was a light in his near-death experience.
Even though the snake venom temporarily blinded him, the memory of her was enough to last a lifetime.
When Scarlett later found him with the bracelet, he always felt something was off but couldn't figure it out, thinking it was just his imagination.
He learned Scarlett had developed a chronic illness and infertility from sucking the snake venom out of him. He felt guilty and tried to make it up to her.
But he couldn't give her the romantic relationship she wanted.
After recalling all this, Alex handed the bracelet back to Scarlett. "My promise still stands; there's no reason to take it back."
Then he picked up Charles from the sofa and headed upstairs.
As he passed Katherine, he paused and looked at her. "Wait here for me; I'll be back soon."
Katherine just nodded.
Scarlett, feeling triumphant, put the bracelet on her wrist and shook it at Katherine with a smug smile.
As long as this bracelet existed, Alex would never ignore her!
Scarlett glared at Katherine and followed Alex upstairs with the child.
Katherine watched them, deep in thought.
"Katherine, if you have a child, the father will already be second-hand. Do you really not mind?"
Katherine snapped out of her thoughts and saw Jonathan had come over.
Jonathan seemed cultured but sometimes talked too much.
Katherine forced a smile. "None of your business."
Jonathan shrugged and smiled. "Don't be so cold. I'm just trying to remind you out of kindness!"
Katherine rolled her eyes. "Kindness?"
Jonathan chuckled. "Of course, I am! Honestly, Katherine, I feel a bit sorry for you. Alex just walked away with another woman's child right under your nose. How do you feel? If I were you, I'd be very disappointed in him."
Katherine didn't have time to think about that. Something had struck her as odd.
The bracelet Scarlett showed looked very familiar, like she had seen an identical one before!
Where had she seen it?
