Chapter 304 What Are You Inquiring About?

Katherine darted forward and blocked the guy's path with a swift move.

It was a middle-aged servant, probably in his forties, dressed in typical servant attire.

"Who are you? Why were you running?" she demanded.

The servant, clearly flustered, stammered, "I'm just a servant here. I wasn't running, just hurrying to the kitchen for something for the banquet hall."

Katherine narrowed her eyes. "You were sneaking around, watching me, and ran off when I noticed you!"

He shook his head vigorously. "No, no!"

Katherine raised an eyebrow. "Not telling the truth? I'll report you to your boss as a creep!"

Panicking, the servant quickly responded, "No, please don't! I really didn't mean any harm."

"Then spill it. Why were you watching me?" Katherine pressed.

"I thought you looked like our young lady who went missing years ago. When I saw you, I was stunned, thinking she had returned. But when you turned around, I realized I was mistaken and felt embarrassed, so I tried to leave quickly. I'm really sorry for offending you!" he explained.

Katherine relaxed a bit. "Your young lady? Is she the woman holding a baby in that painting?"

The servant nodded. "Yes, that's her."

Katherine glanced at the painting. "Do I really look like her?"

The servant's face softened with a mix of admiration and longing. "Yes, your profile resembles her when she was young, but your full face only has a slight resemblance."

Sensing the servant's secret admiration for her mother, Katherine sighed and probed further. "How did she go missing?"

The servant frowned, his voice tinged with anger. "She married an wrong man and..."

"Katherine, why are you asking about this?"

An unfriendly woman's voice cut in.

Katherine turned to see Sophie, dressed to the nines, arms crossed, glaring at her.

Seeing Sophie, the servant took the chance to slip away.

Katherine felt a pang of regret. She had a feeling she was close to uncovering something about her mother's disappearance.

"Katherine, I'm talking to you! Why are you asking about Bernard's mother at Marcus's birthday party?" Sophie demanded.

Katherine snapped back to reality and lazily looked at her. "I saw the woman in the painting and got curious, so I asked."

"Just curious? I think you have ulterior motives!" Sophie's eyes were filled with disgust and suspicion. "Scarlett told me you came to wish Marcus a happy birthday, and I knew something was up! The Ayers family has nothing to do with you, so why are you here? And you're even asking about Bernard's mother! Katherine, are you trying to dig up info on his family to win his favor?"

Katherine rolled her eyes, too lazy to explain, and turned to leave.

"Stop! Who said you could leave?" Sophie shouted.

Katherine ignored her and kept walking.

Annoyed, Sophie chased after her in high heels and blocked her path. "Katherine, you can't have Alex or Bernard! With your poor background, the best you can do is marry some nouveau riche from a small town. Stop dreaming about becoming a princess! Can you have some self-awareness and stop coveting the men who belong to Scarlett and me?"

Katherine nodded cheerfully. "Fine! OK! No problem! Can you move now?"

Sophie was stunned, feeling like she had punched a pillow. "Katherine, what kind of attitude is that?"

Katherine answered, "I agreed with what you said; isn't that enough?"

Sophie retorted, "You..."

"Sophie, Katherine, what are you two arguing about?" Scarlett's soft voice interrupted.

Both women turned to look.

Scarlett, dressed in a luxurious costume with stage makeup, was almost unrecognizable at first glance.

"Sophie, aren't you about to perform Mr. Ayers's favorite scene? Why are you still here?" Sophie asked.

Scarlett replied, "I'm too nervous, so I came to the bathroom first. When I came out, I heard your voice andcame to see what was happening."

Sophie glared at Katherine but didn't want to affect Scarlett's mood before her performance. "Scarlett, it's nothing. We weren't arguing. You should go prepare for your performance!"

"That's good!" Scarlett smiled and looked at Katherine. "Katherine, I'm about to go on stage! This is my gift to Mr. Ayers, to perform his favorite scene from 'Hamilton.' I've been practicing for a long time! Katherine, how do I look?"

Katherine looked at her and smiled. "Hmm, it suits you."

Scarlett always loved acting, so singing in a musical should be fine for her!

"Really? Alex also said I look great! Katherine, I actually wanted you to help me choose whether to sing 'The Phantom of the Opera' or 'Hamilton,' but you weren't there, so Alex helped me choose 'Hamilton.' I actually prefer the Phantom's costume from 'The Phantom of the Opera,' but Alex said that scene is too sad for Mr. Ayers' birthday party. Katherine, what do you think?" asked Scarlett.

Katherine said indifferently, "I don't know much about musicals. You should listen to Mr. Melville."

"OK!" Scarlett's eyes were filled with happiness. "Katherine, let's go! I'm about to go on stage. How about you and Sophie come to my performance?"

Katherine had no interest in going, but Sophie didn't want to ruin her best friend's expectations. She glared at Katherine and pulled her along. "Let's go! Scarlett invited you. Don't be ungrateful!"

The last sentence was whispered into Katherine's ear, only for her to hear!

Sophie didn't want Katherine wandering around the Ayers family asking questions, so she pulled her along to keep an eye on her and prevent her from messing around with Bernard. It was safest to keep her under her watch!

Katherine frowned, not wanting to go, but since Sophie was watching her, she couldn't ask around the Ayers family, so she didn't resist.

As they walked down the stairs together, Scarlett suddenly lost her footing and tumbled down.

"Scarlett!" Sophie was shocked and quickly ran down to help her. "Scarlett, are you OK? Scarlett..."
