Chapter 161 He Left

As Katherine leaned against the headboard with her eyes closed, someone suddenly knocked on the door. A strange woman, about forty years old, then walked in.

"Who are you looking for?" Katherine lifted her eyelids and looked at the unfamiliar woman with some vigilance.

There were officers guarding the door. How did a stranger get in? Who was she?

The middle-aged woman bowed respectfully and said, "Ms. Galatea, Mr. Nelson hired me to take care of you. My name is Maya Collins, and I'll be here to look after your daily needs. If you need anything, just let me know."

Katherine raised an eyebrow and asked, "Mr. Nelson? Leander?"

She nodded and then said, "Yes, that's the Mr. Nelson."

A slight frown appeared between Katherine's brows. Mr. Nelson suddenly hired a caregiver for her. Did Alex leave?

Katherine thought, 'Hilarious, it seems Alex doesn't trust me either. We had no relationship to begin with. Does it matter whether he trusts me or not? The funny thing is, he seemed to have said last night that he likes me and asked me not to shut him out.'

For a moment, Katherine almost believed him.

At this moment, there was a commotion outside the door.

"Who are you? Why won't you let me in? Let me in! Katherine is inside! I want to see Katherine."

It was Teresa's voice.

After recognizing it, Katherine said to the new caregiver, "Maya, please tell the officers at the door to let that girl in. She's my niece."

The caregiver nodded and turned to leave.

After a while, Teresa was brought in by Maya, but she was still frowning and grumbling, "Seriously! I was only gone for a day, and this happened! Katherine, you've been wronged!"

Katherine looked at Teresa and then at the thermos she was carrying. "What delicious food did you bring me?"

Teresa raised the thermos and answered, "Oh, this! Katherine, I had my mom make some asparagus soup for you. It's nutritious and good for your recovery!"

Katherine smiled. "Thank you, I'm actually hungry! Maya, could you please pour me a bowl to cool?"

"Sure, Ms. Galatea," Maya responded, taking the thermos from Teresa and moving to the side to prepare it.

Teresa looked at Maya, then at the cuffs on Katherine's hands and feet, and walked over, pouting. "Katherine, are you just going to let them keep you cuffed like this?"

Katherine shrugged indifferently with a smile. "I'm a suspect right now. The police are just trying to prevent me from escaping. It's understandable."

Teresa huffed angrily. "What suspect! You would never do something so low! It's infuriating!"

Katherine paused, looking at Teresa's unwavering belief in her, and suddenly felt a bit emotional. She hadn't spent much time with Teresa, yet Teresa believed she wouldn't do such a thing, while Alex...

Forget it, why think about him!

Just as she was trying not to think about him, Teresa angrily brought him up again. "And that heartless Alex, at a time like this, going off to..."

Halfway through, she seemed to worry about the consequences and stopped talking.

Katherine only heard half of it and couldn't help but be curious. "Hmm? Where did Alex go?"

Teresa pulled up a chair and sat down, blinking guiltily. "Nothing, I'm not really sure! Katherine, your hands are bandaged, let me feed you the soup?"

"You won't tell me?" Katherine slightly frowned and looked at her.

Teresa had always revered Katherine like a goddess and was genuinely afraid that her goddess would be upset and ignore her. After some hesitation, she finally spoke up, "Katherine, it's just... when I arrived, I saw Alex at the hospital entrance, sending Scarlett home. She got into his car."

Katherine's eyes darkened slightly, and she fell silent, a sarcastic smile tugging at her lips.

Teresa got a bit nervous. "Katherine, please don't be mad! Don't divorce Alex over this, give him a chance."

Katherine snapped back to reality and looked at Teresa calmly. "I'm not mad. But if there's no love between us, why shouldn't I divorce him?"

Teresa pouted sadly. "If you divorce him, then we won't be related anymore. I don't want any other woman as my aunt. Besides you, I won't accept anyone else!"

Katherine looked at her with the same gaze one would give a stubborn child and said lightly, "Alex is rich, powerful, and handsome. It would be easy for him to find someone better than me. You'll like her eventually."

Teresa firmly replied, "No way, no one is better than you!"

Katherine pointedly said, "What about Scarlett?"

Teresa shook her head vigorously, full of rejection. "Don't even mention her. The last thing I want is for her and Alex to end up together!"

The Mitchell family and the Melville family have a long-standing feud, but they shouldn't have any with the Harris family.

Katherine squinted in confusion and asked, "Teresa, you seem to really dislike Scarlett. Why?"

Teresa replied irritably, "I just don't like those frail, sickly women! She saved Alex once when they were kids and has been clinging to him ever since! Alex is practically fed up with her!"

Katherine raised an eyebrow. "Aren't Alex and she very close?"

Teresa's expression suddenly became complicated, "I... I'm not quite sure, but Alex does treat Scarlett differently from others, so everyone thinks they're close."

Katherine nodded in agreement. "Yes, he is different with her. I can see that."

Last night, when he received Scarlett's distress call, Alex was genuinely panicked.

Later, she saw Alex gently patting Scarlett's shoulder to calm her down. It was clear that Alex genuinely cared.

The way Alex spoke to Scarlett was also incredibly soft, as if he was afraid a louder voice would scare her.

He never had that kind of patience with anyone else.

Seeing Katherine deep in thought, Teresa's big eyes filled with worry. "But Alex is even more different with you! Katherine, you're the only person I've ever seen that Alex is so tolerant of!"

Was that so?

Maybe Alex was tolerant of her because he needed her to deal with the elders of the Melville Manor. He was probably just afraid she wouldn't cooperate if he weren't.

If she misunderstood that as something special, it would be self-deception.

After finishing the soup, Katherine managed to persuade Teresa to go home. With Maya around, there was no place for Teresa to rest here anyway.

And Alex, after sending Scarlett home, never returned. He didn't show up the next day either.

The next afternoon, a nurse came in to remove the bandages from her hands.

Her hands were no longer swollen, just a bit red. The doctor said she could go home and take some anti-allergy medication for a few more days.

The police came in with an arrest warrant. "Katherine, according to the doctor's assessment, your condition is stable enough for discharge. We are now formally notifying you that you are under arrest!"
