Chapter 656 Completely Exposed

A little dude popped out from the shadows.

“Dad.” Charles, looking all jittery, stopped a few steps away, too scared to get any closer.

He used to lean on Alex a lot, but ever since Kate bailed, Alex had this scary vibe that made Charles keep his distance.

Seeing it was Charles, Alex's tough-guy look softened. He waved him over. “Come here.”

Charles tiptoed up to Alex, still on edge.

Sure, it was safer here than with the Mitchells—no one was smacking him around—but he still didn't feel like he belonged and was always super skittish.

Alex pulled Charles closer and asked in a low voice, “Do you miss Mom?”

Charles shook his head like crazy. Just hearing “Mom” freaked him out. The mom he remembered was Scarlett, and she was a nightmare. He never wanted to see her again.

Alex saw the fear in Charles's eyes and said gently, “Not Scarlett. I mean my wife. She's your mom now.”

He'd already sorted out the legal stuff. After proving Scarlett was a monster, he'd cut her out of Charles's life. Now, Charles was officially his kid.

Charles blinked, confused. “Dad's wife?”

Alex nodded. “Yep.”

Charles still looked unsure and shook his head. “I don't know her.”

Alex frowned a bit. “You do know her. She's super nice to you, and you like her.”

Charles thought for a sec, then his face lit up. “It's Kate! I wanna find her. She's Dad's wife. She's Mom.”

Alex patted Charles and pulled out his phone, showing him the screen. “Mom's asleep,” Alex said.

The video call with Katherine was still going; he couldn't bring himself to hang up.

Katherine had dozed off without realizing it, no longer avoiding the camera. She'd turned over, facing the camera, sleeping peacefully.

Charles stared at the phone, seeing the person he missed so much, his eyes filling with tears.

Alex put a finger to Charles's lips. “No crying, you'll wake Mom.”

He'd actually muted the mic, so Katherine couldn't hear them. He just didn't know how to handle it if Charles started bawling.

Charles held back his tears and nodded hard. “I won't cry!”

Thinking of Katherine, Alex's eyes softened. “Alright, go find the nanny and get some sleep. Mom will be back soon.”

Charles, now with something to look forward to, nodded happily. “Mom's coming back!”

He headed back to his room. He'd snuck out while the nanny was asleep.

Watching Charles head into his room, Alex glanced back at Katherine on his phone, gently touching the screen. Then he got up and made his way upstairs to his room.

The next morning, Katherine had one of those rare, solid nights of sleep, probably because she was crashing in her childhood room. She woke up feeling super refreshed, no dreams or anything.

She rubbed her eyes, got out of bed, and went to freshen up. Then she started rummaging through the wardrobe for clothes.

Bernard had stocked up on a bunch of maternity clothes for her, all brand new with tags still on. She picked out a comfy-looking one, ditched her pajamas, and slipped it on.

After getting dressed, she instinctively reached for her phone. Walking over to the bedside table, she picked it up to check the time, only to see Alex's face still on the screen.

Katherine let out a scream, staring at the phone in disbelief. “You... why didn't you hang up the video?”

The phone was a bit warm from being on video call all night. It was plugged into the charger, and the call hadn't cut off.

Alex's face was as blank as ever. “Why should I hang up?”

Katherine's eyes darted to the spot where she'd just changed clothes, right in front of the camera. Feeling uneasy but still hopeful, she asked, “Did you see everything just now?”

She hoped maybe he was busy and hadn't looked at the phone.

Alex nodded. “Yep.”

Katherine's face turned beet red. “You... you perv!”

Alex's expression finally shifted a bit. “I think it's a girl.”

Not only had he seen, but he'd also been paying close attention.

Katherine snapped, “Whether it's a girl or not has nothing to do with you! You creep! Gross!”

Even though she was chewing him out, Alex seemed in a good mood and smiled slightly. “Go have breakfast. I've got an early meeting.”

Katherine didn't bother responding and hung up the video call, feeling super embarrassed. He'd seen the whole show of her changing clothes. She wasn't wearing anything under her pajamas. Totally exposed.

Just then, Sunny knocked on her door.

Katherine snapped out of it, shook her head to shake off the embarrassment, and went to open the door.

Sunny stood there with a smug look. Seeing her, he asked curiously, “Katherine, why's your face so red this early? Did you have a good dream?”

Already annoyed, Katherine gave him a playful punch on the head. “No!”

Sunny, holding his head in mock pain.
