Chapter 28 I Know I Was Wrong
Katherine stepped over the broken porcelain on the ground and walked up to Joshua. "Dad, what's wrong? Why are you so angry?"
Sherry stood by, arms crossed, and maliciously added fuel to the fire. "And you have the nerve to ask? You know very well what you've done!"
Katherine glanced at Sherry indifferently. "I've done plenty of good things. I'm not sure which one you're referring to."
Joshua's face darkened, and he asked angrily, "I asked you; you said you were going to move out because you got a job. What kind of job is it?"
Katherine was momentarily speechless because she found it hard to describe the job she was currently doing.
"Pretending to be a domineering man's doting wife, helping him deal with his family elders."
"What kind of job is that? An actress? A temporary wife?"
Seeing Katherine's embarrassed expression, Joshua became even angrier. "You, a graduate from a prestigious university, ended up working as a hostess in a bar! Katherine, where is your sense of shame? Are you trying to drive me insane?"
"A hostess?" Katherine raised an eyebrow.
Joshua slammed a photo on the table. It was a picture of her and Teresa walking out of SNOW together yesterday.
Teresa had gone a little crazy after her breakup yesterday. She dyed her hair bubblegum pink, dressed in an avant-garde style, and had a few drinks, making it easy for people to misunderstand her identity. Otherwise, those three playboys wouldn't have dared to harass her openly yesterday.
And if Katherine and Teresa were seen together, they would naturally be judged by the company they keep.
Katherine looked at the photo and then at Sherry. "Dad, Sherry took this photo and showed it to you, didn't she?"
Sherry, unapologetic, raised her chin in a defiant manner.
At that moment, her mother, Lillian Galatea, walked over and started to play the good person. "Katherine, don't blame Sherry. She just hopes you will come to your senses! Being a hostess may bring in quick money, but it's too decadent! Oh! How could you, my child..."
Seeing the melodramatic performance put on by Lillian, Katherine smiled. "Come to your senses? I think it's Sherry who needs to come to her senses, right?"
Annoyed, Sherry glared at Katherine. "What do you mean, Katherine? I didn't go astray and become a hostess. What do I need to come to my senses about?"
Ignoring Sherry, Katherine first explained to Joshua, "Dad, the girl with the pink hair in the photo is my landlord's relative. She went to the bar alone because she was heartbroken, and I went to pick her up on behalf of the landlord."
Joshua was taken aback, unsure. "Is what you're saying true?"
Katherine nodded confidently. "Yes, it is."
Sherry, however, didn't believe it and stepped forward to expose her. "Katherine, are you still trying to deceive Dad? The SNOW private room at Breaking Dawn Bar is only for VIP members. How could you have entered so boldly if you weren't there for hostess work? Can you explain that?"
Katherine looked at her calmly and smiled. "I was able to go in directly because my landlord is a VIP member there."
Sherry frowned, suddenly remembering the time she had followed Katherine and saw her enter a mansion.
Joshua was starting to believe his youngest daughter's explanation. "Katherine, is it really, as you say? You didn't lie to me, did you?"
Katherine looked at him calmly. "Dad, I would never do something so vulgar."
Joshua breathed a sigh of relief. "That's good! Katherine, please don't go astray. How can I face your mother if you don't do well?"
Seeing her father's change in attitude towards Katherine, Sherry couldn't hold back and complained, "Dad, even if Katherine didn't become a hostess, her current job is nothing to be proud of! I didn't want to say this, fearing that you would get angry, but seeing that she's not making any progress, as her older sister, I have to speak up! Dad, Katherine, has become a maid in a wealthy household. The landlord she mentioned is actually her employer!"
"What?" Joshua furrowed his brows again and looked displeased as he turned to Katherine. "Is that true? You became a maid?"
"Well, sort of..." Katherine thought about how she had been enslaved by Alexander, pretending to be his wife for three months and constantly catering to him, which was not much different from being a maid.
Joshua said with disappointment and frustration, "You gave up your job at Apricot Group, a good job, and became a maid? What were you thinking?"
Before Katherine could respond, Sherry interjected, "Dad, Katherine was actually fired! I don't know what she did wrong to get herself fired!"
Joshua looked at Katherine with a disappointed expression. "Katherine, when will you stop causing me worries? I don't want to deal with you anymore. If you want to be a maid, go ahead, but don't ever say you're my daughter. I can't bear that!"
Katherine remained composed and calmly explained, "Dad, here's the thing. My graduation thesis topic is related to the development of the domestic service industry. So, in order to write a good thesis, I wanted to personally experience working in the domestic service industry. Besides, I don't think it's shameful to work honestly and independently."
Joshua was taken aback and realized that his youngest daughter's words made sense. His displeasure softened, and he said, "Oh, I see."
Katherine nodded obediently and said, "Dad, you don't need to worry about my thesis, but you must persuade Sherry to be more open-minded."
Joshua furrowed in confusion and asked, "What's wrong with Sherry?"
Sherry also looked puzzled and asked, "Persuade me? Katherine, what do you mean? What should Dad persuade me about?"
Katherine looked at Sherry and sighed, "Sherry, the entertainment industry is a complicated place. It's been tough for you these past few years, and if you've been bullied outside, you should have told the family earlier. Why endure it alone?"
Sherry was completely confused and said, "Katherine, what are you talking about?"
Katherine took out her phone, opened a piece of news trending on Twitter, and handed it to Joshua. "Dad, I can't bring myself to say it, but please take a look at what's happening with Sherry..."
Joshua took the phone with suspicion, and as he read, his eyes widened in shock and anger. He looked at Sherry with furrowed brows and exclaimed, "You shameless girl, how could you do such a thing?"
Sherry was stunned and bewildered. "Dad, why are you scolding me?"
Joshua not only wanted to scold her but also felt like strangling his embarrassing daughter. "How dare you ask me that? Don't you know what you've done?!"
"I... I didn't do anything!" Sherry panicked and didn't understand. "Katherine, what did you show Dad?"
Katherine blinked and calmly looked at her, saying, "Sherry, don't you know? You're on the top of the trending list again today, and you're in the number one spot."
