Chapter 588 Unhappy
Alex barked, "Keep looking for her. I'll be back ASAP!"
Fiona heard the click of the phone hanging up, sighed, and flipped through Katherine's phone, finding zilch. She thought, 'What the heck is Katherine up to? Is she really ditching Alex?'
Markovia, Melville Group branch.
Alex snatched his coat and bolted out of the CEO's office, almost knocking into Sophia as she was about to knock.
Sophia, dressed to kill, asked, "Alex, where you headed?"
"Gotta get home, urgent stuff!" Alex shot back, not even slowing down as he made a beeline for the elevator.
Sophia stood there, stunned for a sec, then hurried after him into the elevator. "Alex, you just got back from home. Why the rush again? If you go now, won't all your work be for nothing?"
Alex replied, "Can't worry about that right now!"
Sophia had never seen Alex this rattled. After a moment, she cautiously asked, "Is Ms. Galatea back home throwing a fit?"
Alex stayed mum. As soon as the elevator doors slid open, he bolted out.
Sophia chased after him. "Alex, let me come with you this time!"
Alex kept moving, giving her a quick glance. He hesitated but didn't say no.
Sophia didn't bother packing. She jumped into Alex's car and called her housekeeper to send her stuff over.
In the house Jonathan set up for her, Katherine made herself a sandwich.
Even though she wasn't hungry, she forced herself to eat a bit for the baby's sake.
Jonathan had been thoughtful, stocking the fridge with all sorts of goodies and leaving a note with instructions for the microwave, oven, and toaster.
Thanks to the note, she managed to use the toaster, which she otherwise wouldn't have known how to operate.
'But how does Jonathan, with his silver spoon upbringing, know about this stuff? He's a real puzzle,' she thought.
After eating, Katherine went to crash in the bedroom.
Just as she lay down, her phone buzzed with a text from Jonathan: [Tablet's ready . You can watch movies or play games to kill time after eating. IP is my housekeeper's, so no worries—Alex can't trace it.]
Reading the message, Katherine was taken aback. She looked around the room but found nothing fishy. She replied: [You didn't plant any hidden cameras to spy on me, did you?]
Jonathan: [Of course not! Katherine, you're thinking too low of me. I'm not Alex; I don't have that control freak vibe!]
"Who you texting? You've been glued to your phone," Bernard asked, sipping his coffee and eyeing Jonathan, who was sitting in his office.
Jonathan snapped out of it and put his phone away. "Nothing! Just work stuff!"
Bernard gave him a side-eye. "You're so swamped with work, yet you have time to come here?"
Jonathan took a sip of his coffee. "Just a bunch of petty stuff driving me nuts. Figured I'd take a break and chat with you!"
Bernard didn't have time for small talk; he had a meeting coming up.
Right then, Billy barged in without knocking, looking all worried. "Bernard, we got a problem!"
Bernard looked up calmly. "What's up?"
Billy glanced at Jonathan, recognized him as Bernard's best bud, and spilled the beans. "Bernard, there's trouble with the Melville family. Mrs. Melville's gone missing!"
Bernard's calm face turned dark. "What? What happened?"
Billy explained, "There've been a ton of bodyguards at the Melville gate lately. Our guys thought Mr. Melville was just beefing up security for Mrs. Katherine Melville. This morning, sheand Mrs. Sandra Melville went to Arborwood Grove, and somehow Katherine vanished. The Melville family is flipping out, searching everywhere for her!"
Bernard slammed his coffee cup on the desk. "Alex can't even keep his own wife safe! Billy, round up some guys and find Katherine. When you do, bring her to me. Don't send her back to the Melville family!"
Billy nodded, "Got it, boss!"
After Billy left, Bernard's face stayed grim, full of worry.
Jonathan, on the other hand, looked chill, like he was watching a soap opera.
He had promised Katherine not to spill the beans to Bernard. "Bernard, chill out. Katherine was fine before she met Alex, right? She'll be okay."
Bernard shot Jonathan an irritated glare. "She's not your sister, of course you're not worried!"
Jonathan raised an eyebrow, took another sip of coffee, and smirked. "Katherine may not be my sister, but I like her!"
Bernard snapped back, "What good does that do? She won't be yours! I can't waste time talking to you. I need to go find Katherine myself!"
With that, Bernard stood up, and despite his limited mobility, grabbed his crutch and headed out.
Jonathan quickly stepped in to stop him. "Come on, with your leg, you're gonna look for her? Let Billy and the others handle it. Otherwise, they'll have to babysit you too!"
Bernard felt like chucking his crutches and running!
Jonathan patted Bernard on the shoulder. "Trust me, Katherine won't let anything bad happen to herself."
Bernard sensed something. "Why are you so sure? Do you know where Katherine is?"
Jonathan smiled and shook his head. "I don't know! But from what Billy said, it sounds like Katherine planned her escape from the Melville family. If she did, she's got a plan. Don't stress!"
Bernard frowned and asked, "Katherine planned to escape? Why? Wasn't she getting along with Alex just a few days ago?"
Jonathan shrugged. "I don't know! Just guessing. Maybe Alex was too much of a control freak and made her unhappy."
