Chapter 422 Spit It All Out
"Wait!"
Katherine stopped her.
Scarlett paused, wine glass at her lips. "What's up, Katherine?"
Katherine frowned. "I remember you had a condition with cold intolerance. Stick to the room-temp juice Mrs. Alice Mitchell made for us, like I am."
Scarlett forced a smile. "Katherine, you can have the juice. I want to toast with wine to show my sincerity. My cold intolerance is old news; a little wine won't hurt."
Katherine shook her head. "If you toast with wine and I respond with juice, it looks insincere. Let's both skip it then."
She started to set down her pomegranate juice.
Alice and Scarlett felt both anxious and unwilling to accept it. If Katherine didn't drink, all their plans would be ruined, and finding another chance like this would be tough.
Scarlett forced another smile. "You're right, Katherine. I'll join you with juice. Mom, pour me a glass too. I want to toast Katherine for saving Grandpa."
Alice was shocked. She hadn't expected Scarlett to agree, especially since the pomegranate juice contained saffron, which was harmful to girls.
Katherine smiled. "Now we can toast properly. Mrs. Alice Mitchell, why haven't you poured her juice yet?"
Alice snapped out of it, smiled awkwardly, and walked over with the juice pitcher, hesitating. "Scarlett, you sure?"
"Mom, pour the juice! Katherine's waiting!" Scarlett was determined to get rid of Katherine's baby. She wasn't pregnant, so getting Katherine to drink the juice was crucial.
Seeing no other option, Alice gritted her teeth and poured Scarlett a glass.
Scarlett, knowing she couldn't back down, raised her glass to Katherine. "Katherine, cheers!"
Katherine raised her glass and smiled. "Cheers!"
Scarlett downed her drink, feeling satisfied at the thought of Katherine's miscarriage. But Katherine only took a small sip, then discreetly spit it into a napkin and set it aside.
Seeing this, Scarlett was annoyed. "Katherine, I drank the whole glass. Why did you only sip?"
Katherine smiled apologetically. "I thought 'cheers' was just a festive word. Didn't expect you to drink the whole thing."
Scarlett bit her lip in frustration. "I drank the whole glass; it's not fair you drank so little."
Katherine set down her juice and leaned back. "It's not fair, but I can't drink more. I want to save room for the food. If I drink the whole glass, I won't be able to eat."
Scarlett was about to lose it. "You..."
Vincent cut in, "Katherine's right. Why drink so much juice? Katherine, have some more food. There's plenty here!"
Scarlett felt wronged. "I was being sincere, and Katherine does this? Bernard, look..."
She had drunk the saffron-laced juice to trap Katherine, but Katherine only took a sip! She hoped Bernard would back her up.
But Bernard just narrowed his eyes and said coldly, "If the guest doesn't want to drink, she doesn't have to. Are you forcing her?"
"No..." Scarlett felt even more aggrieved. Bernard wasn't siding with her. Damn Katherine, she must have done it on purpose!
Alice was also angry at Katherine's cunning but more worried about her daughter's health. "Scarlett, did you forget to take your vitamins today?" Alice reminded her.
Scarlett caught on. "Right! I forgot. No wonder I feel unwell. You all continue eating. I'll go take my vitamins and be right back."
She quickly turned and left.
Watching Scarlett leave, Katherine continued eating the chicken leg Hellen had given her, smiling. She guessed Scarlett was probably going to the bathroom to make herself throw up. That pomegranate juice definitely had something harmful in it. They wouldn't be foolish enough to poison her outright and ruin their future. So, the juice likely contained something harmful to the fetus. Scarlett had been trying to get rid of her baby for a while.
Katherine wiped her hands and stood up. "Excuse me, everyone. I need to use the restroom."
Scarlett was in the bathroom, trying to make herself vomit the harmful juice. After five minutes of retching, her face was flushed. She finally stood up and washed her hands. As she left the bathroom, she heard Katherine's voice.
"Got it all out?"
Scarlett stopped abruptly and turned to see Katherine leaning casually against the wall, smirking at her. Her eyes filled with hatred, and Scarlett gritted her teeth. "Katherine, you did that on purpose!"
Katherine asked. "What did I do on purpose?"
Scarlett was furious and dropped the pretense. "You tricked me into drinking that juice while you didn't drink it yourself!"
Katherine laughed. "I don't understand. You and Alice tried so hard to get me to drink that pomegranate juice. I didn't want to, so I just humored you a bit. Besides, it was Alice who made the juice. Why shouldn't I encourage you to drink more? Or do you think Alice put something bad in it?"
"You!" Scarlett was speechless, feeling guilty.
