Chapter 307 Katherine Takes the Stage
"What are you standing here for? Let's go. I'll take you to get your makeup done!" Sophie sneered, her voice dripping with sarcasm.
Katherine sighed, nodding helplessly, and followed Sophie to the makeup area.
Sophie led Katherine backstage.
Bernard, standing still, shot a cold glance at Katherine's retreating figure, narrowing his eyes.
He didn't care about Katherine's performance; he just found her reaction suspicious.
Wherever Katherine went, trouble followed, causing chaos.
He hoped she wouldn't ruin his grandfather's birthday banquet!
If it weren't for calming Scarlett down and getting her foot checked, he wouldn't have let Katherine stay, much less perform.
Just then, Billy arrived with the family doctor.
"Mr. Mitchell, the family doctor is here. How's Ms. Mitchell doing?" Billy asked, looking concernedly at Scarlett in his boss's arms.
Bernard's expression was calm. "Her foot's badly injured; she can't walk. Let him check for any bone damage."
"Yes! Doctor, please check Ms. Mitchell's foot!" Billy said.
The family doctor stepped forward. "Mr. Mitchell, it's better to place Ms. Mitchell in a stable position so her foot can relax for a more accurate examination."
"Alright," Bernard replied.
He carried Scarlett into a nearby guest room and gently placed her on the sofa for the doctor to examine her injury.
Scarlett didn't resist, following Bernard's instructions and cooperating with the doctor. A barely noticeable sinister smile flashed across her innocent face.
In reality, her foot didn't hurt at all; she was faking it!
She was eagerly anticipating Katherine's embarrassment on stage!
Marcus hated it when people who couldn't perform opera got on stage and sang poorly. Today, this would make Marcus despise Katherine completely, saving her from trying every trick to climb the social ladder!
"Ms. Mitchell, does it hurt here?" the doctor asked, pressing on her ankle.
Scarlett put on a brave yet pained expression and lied. "It still hurts a bit, but it's much better than before. It really hurt when I fell down the stairs."
"And here?" The doctor pressed on other parts of her foot.
Scarlett's response remained that it hurt a bit.
After a thorough examination, the family doctor frowned slightly and stood up. "Ms. Mitchell's ankle is just sprained; there's no bone damage. Don't worry, it's nothing serious. Just apply some medication, and she'll be fine. However, she should avoid walking for a while and rest to fully recover."
Hearing the doctor's words, Bernard nodded in relief. "Good, that's a relief."
Scarlett's eyes darted nervously. "Bernard, since the doctor said my foot isn't seriously injured, I want to go see Katherine's performance. I'm still a bit worried."
Bernard's expression turned stern. "Scarlett, you heard the doctor. You need to rest and not move around. Be obedient."
Scarlett pouted pitifully. "But I really want to see. Bernard, can you take me there? I'll just take a quick look, okay?"
Bernard's brow furrowed deeply. "No, Scarlett. Katherine is performing in your name. If people see you in the audience, it'll expose everything."
Scarlett was momentarily stunned. She hadn't forgotten that, but she really wanted to see Katherine embarrass herself and then appear in time to prove that the person on stage wasn't her, distancing herself from the situation.
"Bernard, I just want to see from a distance. We won't go to the audience area; we'll stay far away where no one can see us," she pleaded.
Bernard, however, was only concerned about her sprained ankle and left no room for discussion. "Scarlett, don't be stubborn. Your priority now is to let the doctor apply medication and then rest and recover."
"Bernard," Scarlett called out in a coquettish tone, her eyes welling up with tears.
Bernard's brow remained tightly furrowed, unmoved.
Seeing the stalemate, Billy thought for a moment before stepping forward. "Ms. Mitchell, you should listen to Mr. Mitchell and rest here to recover. I'll go downstairs and record a video for you so you can see Katherine's performance from here."
Hearing this, Scarlett, though dissatisfied, saw that Bernard was adamant and thought Billy's idea wasn't bad. She reluctantly nodded. "Alright. Thank you, Billy."
Billy responded respectfully, "Ms. Mitchell, it's no trouble at all."
Scarlett had always maintained a kind and understanding image in front of others.
So, almost everyone who knew her thought she was genuinely down-to-earth and angelic, with a positive and likable impression of her, including Billy.
Bernard didn't stop Billy but he looked at his seemingly obedient yet increasingly troublesome sister with a complex expression, a mix of frustration and weariness gathering in his eyes.
Backstage, Katherine had completed her makeup and was now wearing the performer's costume.
Sophie, standing nearby, scrutinized her appearance and couldn't help but feel that Katherine, with her stage makeup, looked even more captivating than Scarlett. This made Sophie even more resentful and jealous, and she snapped, "Katherine, you better sing well on stage and not embarrass Scarlett!"
Katherine looked in the mirror, raising an eyebrow at the bossy Sophie. "I told you, I'm not good at performing opera. You insisted on having me replace Miss Mitchell. If you're worried about embarrassment, maybe it's better I don't go on stage."
"You." Sophie was flustered. "Katherine, your makeup is done. Stop acting up! The show has already started, and if you don't go on stage now, what will the other performers do?"
Katherine stood up slowly. "Hmm, you have a point. But wasn't I supposed to perform 'Hamilton' for Miss Mitchell? Why am I dressed and made up for 'The Phantom of the Opera'?"
Sophie dismissed her concern. "Scarlett is wearing the 'Hamilton' costume, and she's injured, so she can't take it off. You'll have to perform 'The Phantom of the Opera' instead! It's all the same; you're just filling in, so stop being picky!"
Katherine sighed in frustration. "Well, I guess I have no choice but to embarrass myself for Miss Mitchell."
Hearing the end of the previous act on stage, she took a deep breath, braced herself, and reluctantly stepped on stage.
Seeing Katherine go on stage, Sophie smirked triumphantly, eager to see how she would perform! She eagerly left the backstage area and went to the front of the stage to watch the real show unfold!
