Chapter 413 I Don't Belong to the Mitchell Family
Bernard snapped back to reality at the noise and saw one of the off-limits rooms in the Mitchell home—the one where Laura had lived as a child—was open.
From outside, he saw Katherine inside, squatting on the floor with a music box, lost in thought.
Hearing Scarlett's voice, Katherine slowly lifted her head and looked at the siblings.
Scarlett screamed, "Katherine, how could you break Laura's music box? That was her favorite when she was little!"
Katherine was momentarily stunned. She wasn't surprised by Scarlett's lie; she just stood up calmly and said, "It wasn't me."
Scarlett, looking shocked, walked over and snatched the broken music box. She examined it closely, acting as if she had just discovered the damage, lamenting, "What should we do? It's really broken!"
Then, Scarlett turned to Bernard, looking kind and understanding, and apologized.
"Bernard, I'm sorry! I just went downstairs to get Katherine a drink, and she wandered into Laura's room and broke her favorite music box! It's my fault. Please don't blame her; blame me!"
Scarlett knew Bernard hated anyone entering Laura's room and wouldn't tolerate anything being damaged in there.
Once, a maid accidentally snagged the curtain lace with her shoe while cleaning, and Bernard was furious and punished her severely.
So, the room didn't need to be locked; no one dared to enter it.
Everything in the room stayed exactly as it was before Laura disappeared.
Scarlett had been annoyed by that room for a long time, but she didn't dare touch anything for fear of Bernard's wrath.
Today, using Katherine as an excuse, she took the chance to cause some damage!
Now that Katherine had "broken" Laura's favorite music box, even if she was their grandfather's savior, Bernard would surely punish her severely!
Although it wouldn't completely get rid of the Katherine problem, it would at least teach her a lesson and vent some frustration!
Bernard walked in, took the broken music box from Scarlett's hand, looked at it, and then glanced at the shattered glass bear on the floor. He just sighed and said, "It's okay, we can get it fixed."
Scarlett was genuinely stunned, her eyes widening in disbelief.
What was going on?!
This was Laura's favorite music box, broken by an outsider!
And Bernard wasn't angry?!
Bernard's expression was unreadable as he said to Scarlett, "Scarlett, go check on Charles. I'll take care of our guest."
Scarlett, not seeing the outcome she had hoped for, was filled with resentment and confusion!
What was going on? Why wasn't Bernard angry? Why wasn't he punishing Katherine?
She didn't want to leave. "A nanny is watching Charles. I'll stay here with you and Katherine!"
Bernard's eyes darkened, filled with sternness, leaving no room for negotiation.
Scarlett had been spoiled since childhood, but she still feared Bernard when he got serious.
"Alright, Bernard, please be kind to Katherine. Don't get mad at her for accidentally entering Laura's room and breaking her favorite music box! I'll go check on Charles now!"
Before leaving, Scarlett tried to stir things up one last time but still didn't get the reaction she wanted and had to leave.
After Scarlett left, Katherine didn't plan to stay in the room either. She said calmly, "Mr. Mitchell, I'm sorry for entering a place I shouldn't have. I'll leave now, but I didn't break the music box."
With that, she started to walk out.
Bernard raised his arm to block her, his voice heavy. "This room is strictly off-limits in the Mitchell family. No one can enter without my permission.."
Katherine frowned. "So? Because I entered your off-limits room, how are you going to punish me?"
Bernard just closed the door, fearing she would run out without listening to him.
"Katherine, this is indeed a restricted area for others, but you can enter because this was your room when you were a child. Iwon't blame you or punish you. Iam happy you're home."
Katherine paused, then a sarcastic smile appeared on her lips.
She had suspected it. The familiar feeling from the music box and the fragments of memories in her mind made her feel that this room had some connection to her.
Bernard handed her the broken music box. "This was your favorite music box when you were little. It was a gift from me."
Katherine glanced at it indifferently. "Really? Then you keep it for yourself."
Bernard's brow furrowed slightly. "This room, and everything in it, has been kept exactly as it was when you lived here. Do you remember?"
Katherine answered, "I don't remember."
Bernard smiled bitterly. "It's okay if you don't remember. Once you're home, everything will come back to you slowly."
Katherine laughed. "Mr. Mitchell, you seem to be mistaken! I'm here today because your grandparents invited me. I'm not planning to stay here!"
Bernard frowned. "Laura, I know you're married to Alex now and living with the Melville family, but you should still occasionally come back to your family home."
Katherine frowned and corrected him seriously. "I'm sorry, my name is Katherine!"
Bernard looked at her helplessly. "I know the Galatea family didn't treat you well. Why do you still use their last name?"
Katherine chuckled. "The Galatea family didn't treat me well because I have no blood relation to them. A last name is just a label to me, nothing special. But no matter what my last name is, it will never be Mitchell!"
Bernard looked at her with a heavy heart. "Why? Is it because I misunderstood you and treated you poorly before?"
