Chapter 996 Why Did You Close Your Eye
At this moment, Christina was completely different from the one who had just ignored him at the door.
Bernard gazed at her, full of curiosity. What was wrong with her?
Receiving his gaze, Christina felt a bit guilty. "What's wrong? Bernard, don't you like this dish?"
"No, I like it!" Bernard picked up some food from his bowl and put it in his mouth.
In front of Hellen and Vincent, they still had to put on a show.
Throughout the meal, Christina played the role of Bernard's good wife, constantly serving him food.
No matter what she served, Bernard accepted it, even though there were a few dishes he didn't particularly like.
At first, Hellen was a bit suspicious that they might be having a quarrel, but seeing them getting along well, she felt relieved.
After dinner, Christina found an excuse to return to her room. Acting here was exhausting and too cheesy; she felt like she was going to throw up!
Just after she finished her shower, Bernard walked in.
Christina tidied her freshly dried hair, turned around, and sat on the edge of the bed, speaking in a flat tone, "Your grandparents probably haven't gone back to their room yet. You should go sleep in the guest room later."
Bernard hadn't been home much lately, and even when he did come back, he slept in the guest room. They hardly spent much time in the same room.
Bernard responded and went to the bathroom to take a shower.
When he came out, Christina was sitting on the balcony with a glass of milk on the small table.
Bernard stared at her lonely back for a while before walking over and sitting down on the chair next to her. "What's wrong with you today?"
Although Christina hadn't said anything and had been playing the role of a good wife in front of Hellen and Vincent, he still vaguely sensed that something was off with her today.
Christina took a sip of milk and ignored him. It seemed that because he came over, she didn't want to stay there anymore and got up to go back to the room.
Her disregard made Bernard a bit unhappy, so he followed her inside.
Christina had just placed the milk on the bedside table and was about to go to bed when Bernard suddenly pinned her down on the bed!
Before she could react, Bernard pressed down on her, trapping her so she couldn't move. "What are you upset about? Why are you ignoring me?"
"Let go of me first!" Christina struggled hard, but it was useless. The difference in strength between them was too great.
The distance between them was very close, and every inch of her skin that Bernard touched became unusually hot. Christina felt her heartbeat quicken.
"Answer me, why are you ignoring me?"
Christina turned her head away, unwilling to look at him. "I'm not ignoring you; I just don't want to talk. Is that not allowed?"
"Why don't you want to talk?"
"No reason! But Mr. Mitchell, why did you come back? I thought you would spend the night with Virginia!"
Christina's sarcastic tone made it clear to anyone that she was in a very bad mood.
Bernard paused, staring at her for a while. "So, are you jealous?"
"No, I'm not!" Christina retorted with a frown, turning her face to glare at him. "I just find it funny that someone who just warned me not to get too close to other men is now rumored to be with another woman!"
Bernard was almost certain why Christina was acting so strangely today. "Do you mind that I'm rumored to be with another woman?"
"I... No, Mr. Mitchell, don't overthink it. I don't care at all!"
"Really?" Bernard clearly didn't believe her denial but didn't expose her lie either.
Christina's eyes darted around, unable to hide her panic. "I just think that during the contract period, you should behave yourself and not go to hotels with other women! Otherwise, I can't explain it to your grandparents!"
Bernard was silent for a moment, then explained truthfully, "I know. Virginia got injured while filming today and had no one with her. I just took her to the hotel, that's all."
Christina was a bit surprised that he would explain to her. Looking into his eyes, she said, "Why are you telling me this? I didn't ask you!"
"Virginia and I have known each other since we were kids and have been friends for many years. Sometimes I have to help her. Don't misunderstand. Those news articles like to make things up, and I've already had Billy suppress those false reports." He explained calmly and honestly.
Bernard's calm and sincere gaze made it impossible for Christina not to believe him.
'Is that so?' Christina pouted, feeling inexplicably relieved, and awkwardly looked away. "Alright! I get it! Can you get up now? You're making it hard for me to breathe!"
"No." Bernard gave a cold reply without any reason.
Christina's cheeks flushed, and she tried hard to control her racing heart. "This position is too weird. If we need to talk, this isn't appropriate! Stop messing around and get up!"
"Inappropriate?" Bernard slowly lowered his head. "Ms. Russell, have you forgotten that we are currently husband and wife?"
Christina felt like her heart was about to jump out of her throat, but at this moment, she had no strength to push Bernard away.
Come on, this position was normal for a real couple, but they weren't a real couple!
Christina helplessly met Bernard's eyes, watching his face get closer and closer. She felt like she couldn't escape and instinctively closed her eyes.
Just when she thought Bernard's lips would touch hers, there was no sensation at all.
Christina stayed quiet for a moment, then heard Bernard's light laughter in her ear.
Realizing she had overthought, she quickly opened her eyes and saw Bernard looking at her with a teasing expression.
Christina then realized she had been tricked. "Bernard!"
"Yes, what's wrong?" Bernard, the one who had been mischievous, remained calm and composed, as if what had just happened had nothing to do with him.
Christina, both embarrassed and angry, pushed Bernard away forcefully and sat up, tidying her hair. "Bernard, you're too much."
"What did I do that was too much?" Bernard also sat up. "Ms. Russell, why did you close your eyes just now? Were you expecting something?"
"I..." Christina was embarrassed. She couldn't admit that she thought Bernard was going to kiss her.
And she had closed her eyes, actually choosing to accept it!
Damn it! Even she couldn't accept her own wishful thinking just now! She wished she could disappear into a hole!
"My eyes were just bothering me, okay? Can't they be uncomfortable?"
Bernard naturally didn't believe her poor excuse, but he didn't tease her further. He got up and went to the balcony to light a cigarette.
The atmosphere between them felt different, as if there was an invisible barrier that could shatter at any moment.
