Chapter 452 Unwilling to Get the Marriage Certificate

Katherine snapped back to reality and looked at Alex. "That's Fiona's crush. I'm trying to set them up. Can't you tell?"

Alex squinted. "Isn't that the type you used to like?"

Katherine was puzzled. "The type I used to like? How do you know?"

He replied flatly, "You told me. You like obedient younger guys who call you 'sis.' Remember?"

Katherine nodded. "I haven't forgotten. I still like that type!"

He expected her to deflect, but she admitted it straight up!

Alex's eyes darkened, jaw tightened, and he let out a cold snort. "No wonder I can't catch Ms. Galatea's eye!"

Katherine fed him a piece of grilled beef. "Alex, if you're going to be jealous, at least be reasonable! Everyone has an ideal type! I probably wasn't your ideal type at first either. As adults, we have to accept the difference between dreams and reality!"

Alex let out a cold laugh. So she was just settling for him!

He turned away, refusing to eat the meat.

Katherine didn't push it. If he didn't want to eat, she'd eat it herself!

Alex went silent, acting childishly for such a usually mature guy.

Katherine felt helpless. Remembering he had taken time off work to pick her up, she coaxed, "Alex, you may not be a college student anymore, but you're good-looking, and I like you a lot."

Alex glanced at her. "You just like me?"

Katherine frowned. "Isn't liking you enough?"

Alex turned back, pinched her chin, and lifted it. "Why don't you love me?"

In public, this intimate gesture drew attention.

Katherine knew how much Alex liked to kiss her and wanted to avoid being watched.

She moved her chin away and changed the subject. "Alex, hurry up and eat. I even ordered for you!"

Alex didn't push it. He picked up the utensils, placed some meat on her plate, and used a paper towel to soak up the grease. He didn't want her eating anything too greasy.

About half an hour later, they left the barbecue place. Katherine patted her full stomach. "I'm stuffed! Alex, let's walk instead of taking the car!"

Alex naturally held her hand and led her out slowly.

Once they left the mall, Alex took her down a quieter road, perfect for a walk.

They strolled along, chatting intermittently, and soon saw an elementary school where it was dismissal time. Fiona and Nathan were handing out flyers to parents picking up their kids.

Fiona, a spoiled rich girl, had never done such a basic job. When a parent waved off her flyer impatiently, her face turned red with anger, but she had to hold it in, looking quite embarrassed.

Nathan noticed, walked over, bent down slightly, and said something comforting. Then he tried to take the flyers from Fiona, not wanting her to continue.

But Fiona stubbornly refused to give the flyers back to Nathan. She started recommending Nathan to the impatient parents and politely handed out the flyers.

Watching this, Katherine raised an eyebrow. "So, Alex, happy with the brother-in-law I picked for you?"

Alex looked at Fiona, usually so arrogant, now handing out flyers with a poor boy. He was surprised but remembered Nathan once liked Katherine, so his expression soured. "Just average."

Katherine said, "Nathan's a top student. His parents are highly educated. He's handsome, humble, and doesn't flirt around! Where can you find such a nice guy these days?"

Alex frowned, squinting at her. "You seem to know a lot about him. Have you really considered him?"

Katherine sensed jealousy and explained, "He's popular at school. The girls talk about him a lot. I overheard."

Alex's face stayed stern, and he snorted. "If Nathan were that great, he wouldn't be interested in Fiona!"

True, a highly educated family wouldn't be swayed by wealth alone. Fiona, aside from her background and looks, didn't have much going for her.

But Alex might still be jealous, refusing to admit Nathan's excellence.

Katherine didn't push it. They walked away without approaching Fiona.

To Katherine's surprise, the county clerk's office was right in front of the school.

She watched a couple, beaming with happiness, walk out of the office with their marriage license, discussing where to celebrate.

She thought of Teresa's suggestion that Alex take her to get a marriage license and Alex's ambiguous avoidance at that time.

She didn't care about the paper because her mother's broken marriage taught her it was useless in critical moments, unable to protect a relationship or humanity.

So, it didn't matter if they got it or not!

But thinking of Alex's avoidance that day made her uncomfortable.

"Alex, since we're here, why not get a marriage license as a keepsake?" She said it lightly, like a spur-of-the-moment idea.

Alex paused, glanced at the office, then looked back at her. "Why the sudden urge to get a marriage license?"

His question made it seem like getting a marriage license with her was unreasonable.

Katherine tugged at the corner of her mouth. "We're just passing by! What, you don't want to?"

Alex raised his hand and gently patted her head. "We didn't bring the documents today. Maybe another time."

Katherine didn't give up, smiling and saying, "Have Leander bring the documents over. It's not far from your office!"

Alex pressed his lips together and stayed silent for a long time. His gaze grew deeper and more complex, hard to read.

Katherine wasn't insensitive. His silence alone was enough to make her understand his meaning.
