Chapter 169 And Then?

Alex furrowed his brow slightly and asked, "Playboy? Tell me, how am I a playboy?"

Katherine was about to point out how awful his behavior was when her phone suddenly rang from her pocket.

Her thoughts interrupted, she took out her phone and saw the caller ID—it was an unsaved number.

She had an excellent memory and could remember numbers almost instantly. She immediately recognized it was Scarlett calling. "Alex, you answer it. It's Scarlett."

She handed the phone directly to the man, then turned her head to look at the street scene outside the car window, politely avoiding.

Alex didn't even glance at the phone. He took it and pressed the reject button, saying seriously, "Katherine, turn around and look at me."

Katherine turned her face to look at him, her beautiful eyes tinged with sarcasm. "And then?"

His expression was deep as he stared into her eyes. "That day I asked you to come to Moonlight Manor was actually because..."

At that moment, the phone rang again, the ringtone looping incessantly.

A trace of irritation flashed in Alex's eyes.

Katherine raised an eyebrow and remarked, "Answer it! What if she has something urgent?"

Alex thought for a moment and answered on speaker.

Scarlett's soft voice immediately came through from the other end. "Alex, are you home yet?"

He answered, "Not yet, what's up?"

Scarlett sounded helpless on the other end. "Alex, Bernard's car broke down on Whispering Willow Bridge. We can't leave right now. Can you come pick us up?"

Alex's face was expressionless. "What about Bernard's surbordinates? He can't find anyone else to pick you up?"

Scarlett's voice trembled. "Bernard's phone is dead, and he never wrote down his subordinates' numbers. I only have your number saved in my phone, Alex. We can't reach anyone else and I'm not feeling well right now."

Alex responded with a grunt, "Wait, I'll send someone to pick you up."

Hearing his arrangement, Scarlett seemed a bit hurt. "Alex? Didn't you just leave the hospital not long ago? You shouldn't be far from Whispering Willow Bridge, right? Can't you come yourself? Or is it... Katherine doesn't want you to come?"

Katherine, listening on the side, rolled her eyes. How did this get dragged into her? What nonsense!

Scarlett continued weakly, "Alex, my illness seems to be acting up again. By the time your surbordinate get here, I might not hold on. Alex... I really feel terrible right now."

Alex frowned, silent for two seconds. "Send me your location."

Scarlett's tone immediately brightened. "Okay! I'll send it right away, thank you."

When Alex hung up the phone, Katherine had already unbuckled her seat belt, ready to get out of the car.

But just as she moved, Alex grabbed her wrist!

"Where are you going?" His tone was complicated.

Katherine said, "To avoid any unnecessary misunderstandings that I'm interfering with your relationship with Scarlett, I'll take a cab myself! Alex, don't worry about me, just get out of my face!"

She threw in a curse to vent her frustration.

He glared at her coldly. "Sit tight, we're going together!"

Then, Katherine was forcibly buckled back into her seatbelt.

The car quickly turned around and headed towards Whispering Willow Bridge.

Katherine was really annoyed and snapped, "Alex, I don't think I should go with you to see Scarlett."

"You are the one I like!" Alex impatiently interrupted her grumbling, suddenly blurting out this seemingly out-of-nowhere statement.

Katherine was genuinely stunned, then said disinterestedly, "Alex, don't joke like that, I don't..."

He answered, "Shut up! I'm driving, and I don't want to hear anything that'll make me angry right now! Just stay quiet and wait. I'll explain everything to you later. Be good, okay?"

Alex kept his eyes on the road, speaking to her in a tone that was both commanding and stern, yet also somehow coaxing.

Katherine furrowed her brow, feeling conflicted, and obediently leaned back in her seat, watching the scenery speed by outside the window without saying another word.

Whispering Willow Bridge, midsection, a black business sedan was parked by the roadside, hazard lights flashing.

Alex drove past the car and pulled over.

Katherine had no intention of getting out, but he reached over and unbuckled her seatbelt.

Alex said, "What are you daydreaming about? Get out!"

She had no choice but to follow him out of the car.

As soon as they stepped out, Scarlett approached, coughing weakly a couple of times before saying, "Alex, you're here!"

Alex nodded slightly at her, then looked up at Bernard, who was standing by the car, and asked, "What's wrong with the car?"

Bernard patted the car's hood and replied, "Probably got water in the engine when we went through a puddle. It just won't start."

Alex tossed him the car keys and stated, "Take my car. You can drive Scarlett home first."

Bernard caught the keys, his expression momentarily frozen, then he smiled. "Thanks, sorry to trouble you."

He then glanced deeply at Katherine, who was quietly standing to the side, feeling a bit impressed by how well she manipulated Alex.

In the past, Alex would never have left Scarlett like this.

Seeing this, Scarlett anxiously said, "Alex, if you give us your car, what about you? We can all go together, you know!"

"No, we were just thinking of taking a walk by the river." Alex raised his hand and gently patted Katherine's head, implying something.

Katherine remained silent. Who wanted to take a walk by the river with him? Alex was really making things up!

Scarlett looked at Katherine, then at the large hand on her head, a fleeting shadow of darkness in her eyes. Quickly, she said considerately, "Alex, it's windy by the river. Katherine might catch a cold. I think we should all go together!"

Alex took off his jacket and draped it over Katherine. "It's fine. Someone will come to pick us up later. You're not feeling well, right? Don't stand here; get in the car and go home with your brother to rest."

Scarlett said, "But Alex..."

Alex didn't look at Scarlett again. He turned his head and said softly to Katherine, "Let's go. I have something to tell you."

With that, he gently put his arm around Katherine's shoulder and led her to walk along the bridge.

Scarlett stood there in a daze, watching their backs as they left together, biting her lip in frustration.

Bernard's car had broken down because she had tampered with it while her brother was buying her a drink.

Scarlett had thought that if she called Alex, he would prioritize her health, make Katherine get out of the car and go home on her own, and then personally take her home to rest!

Unexpectedly, Alex chose to walk on the bridge with Katherine, leaving her with Bernard.

"Scarlett, stop staring. Let's go," Bernard called.

Scarlett snapped out of it, nodded obediently, and got into Alex's car with Bernard.

Sitting in the car, she still felt unwilling and quickly typed out a text message to send Alex.

On the other side, the phone beeped twice.

Katherine glanced at the message notification on the screen and handed the phone to the man beside her. "Alex, it's a text for you. Another message from Scarlett."
