Chapter 672 So It Was Him
Sophia flicked on her phone's flashlight and walked over to Katherine, looking a bit puzzled. "Katherine, what now?"
Katherine kept her eyes on their surroundings and answered calmly, "Keep searching. See if there's anything suspicious left around here."
Sophia nodded, glancing around. "But this place is huge. How are we supposed to search it all? And the cops already combed through here earlier. There shouldn't be anything left."
Katherine found Sophia's chatter annoying. Didn't she think about this before dragging her here? Less talking, more searching!
Ignoring Sophia, Katherine bent down and sifted through some charred debris, picking up a shiny object. Just a piece of scrap metal. She tossed it aside and kept searching.
Being heavily pregnant, bending over was exhausting. She straightened up to take a breather and then heard voices nearby. "Boss, the cops sealed off this factory. Whatever you dropped here is probably gone after that explosion. We should just give up."
"Shut up! Hand me the flashlight!"
Hearing footsteps getting closer, Katherine acted fast. She grabbed Sophia and hid behind a half-destroyed pillar.
Sophia was startled but quickly caught on, hearing the men talking. "Boss, even with the flashlight, we can't see much. Let's just stop."
"If you keep talking, I'll kick you out!"
"Alright, I'll shut up!"
Katherine stayed hidden, trying to place the familiar voices.
Sophia nudged her and whispered, "Katherine, could they be the ones who hurt Alex?"
Katherine shot her a cold look, signaling her to stay quiet.
It was too quiet here; they could easily be discovered.
Sophia nodded and covered her mouth.
It seemed like those two were also looking for something.
Katherine watched them, planning to follow when they left to see if she could find out more.
But they got spotted!
The fatter guy suddenly said, "Boss, look! Is that a red car over there?"
The guy with the flashlight pointed it in the direction the fat man indicated and saw a red sports car. "Damn! Someone's here! Search the area!"
"Yes, boss!"
The two men switched from searching for things to searching for people, sweeping their flashlights around.
Katherine instinctively grabbed Sophia's wrist, her eyes darting around, ready to run.
Sophia had forgotten to turn off her phone's flashlight, and the reflection off the car's paint caught the fat man's attention.
Katherine thought Sophia could handle herself in these situations, but she ended up causing trouble!
"Who's there? Come out!"
"Yeah, come out!"
The two men had figured out their hiding spot!
Katherine tried to pull Sophia to run, but they didn't even get a step in.
Sophia held her back, not letting her move.
Katherine frowned and whispered urgently, "What are you doing? We need to run!"
Sophia shook her head, still holding onto Katherine. "Katherine, we can't run! You're pregnant. We won't outrun them!"
Katherine was confused. "Then what do you suggest?"
Before Katherine could figure it out, Sophia pulled her out from their hiding spot.
Sophia acted like she didn't know anything and said, "Sorry, we were just passing by and didn't mean to disturb you. If there's nothing else, we'll leave now. You can continue your search."
The fat man blocked their way, looking them up and down. "Passing by? In the middle of the night? You two just happened to be here?"
Sophia stammered, "Well, we..."
"We were desperate to use the bathroom and couldn't find one, so we came here where no cars would pass by. We didn't expect anyone else to be here," Katherine interjected, keeping her head down.
Desperate to use the bathroom? The fat man laughed mockingly.
But then the thin man walked over to Katherine and commanded coldly, "You, lift your head!"
Katherine didn't move.
The thin man grew impatient. He pulled out a gun and pressed it against her chin, lifting her face.
As he saw Katherine's face, he recognized her.
The tall, thin man had silver-gray hair, a stud in his left ear, and a cold, sinister gaze.
He held the gun under Katherine's chin with one hand and shone the flashlight on her face with the other. After scrutinizing her for a moment, a vicious smile appeared. "So it's you! Alex's secret wife!"
Katherine didn't understand why he called her that. "Sir, you have the wrong person. I'm not Alex's wife."
The silver-haired man pressed the gun harder. "Stop pretending! I know you. It's you!"
Katherine stayed calm. "You have the wrong person. I'm not. She is Alex's legal wife. If you have any grudges, take it out on her!"
She pointed to Sophia standing next to her.
Sophia paused, then said angrily, "Katherine, how could you do this now?"
Actually, from the moment Sophia pulled her out, Katherine had recognized the silver-haired man.
It was Carl!
Shortly after she met Alex, she was kidnapped once, and it was Carl who did it.
It seemed it was him again this time!
